“Beautiful views”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

The views from the hotel are mostly beautiful, but some of the balconies overlook the walking paths in the hotel. We were lucky enough to get a room with a quite decent view. Also, love rooms had a private Jacuzzi which was great. The breakfast is amazing.

The pool and the view from there is breath taking, but there is a very limited amount of sun chairs at the pool. There were many times when we were not able to get a seat, you had to be there early to get one.

The hotel is located on a hill, so taxi drivers also want to charge you more than usually. We asked about 6 different taxi drivers, and we still payed much more than it should have been for the distance. However, we did not feel like walking up either.

There is a shuttle bus from the hotel to two different destinations in Samui, but it is not very frequent and you need to book an hour in advance. This means that you need to carefully plan when you want to go and come back to the hotel. Also, they generally do not let you take the shuttle bus with your luggage when leaving the hotel and they charge ridiculous amounts for a taxi themselves. Finally we were allowed to take the shuttle down from the hill so that we could find a taxi on our own.

Hotel offers free international calls which is great. They also advertise free drinking water, but this means two small bottles every day like at most hotels in Thailand. We never got more toiletries either, even after finishing the previous ones. Also, a couple of times they took our towels but did not give new ones.

The room was never cool when we returned, the aircon was never on when we were out. The aircon also took longer than usually to cool down the room. Our minibar was never cold, not sure if it was just a very bad minibar or broken. However, we did not feel like complaining about that as well after having to complain about missing towels, blankets etc.

In general the hotel was good. The game room was a nice bonus. However, the hotel definitely does not feel like a 5 star hotel. We stayed in 4 star hotels in Samui and elsewhere in Thailand that had much better service, air conditioning, and cleaner rooms.

My husband and I stayed here for our official honeymoon which was a two week tour of Thailand. We flew into Bangkok, and made our way down by night train to Surat Thani, and caught a ferry over to Samui. We were disorganised in getting from the ferry port to the hotel, having neglected to book a transfer while in Bangkok for a day. Despite this, we managed to call the hotel and they arranged for a pick up for us.
We were greeted by a big white bus, that had an automatic-opening sliding door which led into an oasis of cool air conditioning with leather seats, and a mirrored ceilinged taxi to our hotel. We were SO excited (and relieved to be in the air con again!).
We drove around the island (about 20-25 minutes) and pulled off on the road up to the hotel. Along the road, there are little signs telling you exactly how long until you reach the hotel.
Upon arrival at reception, we were politely greeted by the hotel staff, who provided us with a chilled freshly squeezed fruit juice, and cool, folded damp flannels to refresh ourselves with. We felt instantly relaxed and spent a few minutes chilling out on the sofas looking out at the bay while reception took care of our check in details.

We were then transported to our Wow Room via a golf buggy. The views, of course, were WOW! The room was lovely, and just what we needed. We headed down to the pool and also went to Bophut for an hour or so, where we visited the 7/11 and got a few snacks for our room (because the room service ones, while nice, weren't really within our personal budgets to be snacking on the whole holiday!). We had dinner at the hotel, which was divine. We ended up eating at the hotel most nights, because we knew we were going to get great food, and there was so much variety in the dishes - both Thai and 'Western' style. (We went for Thai 97% of the time!).
The beds were big and comfy and breakfast was included in the price. Breakfast was amazing, and despite the fact that we love a good lie in, we got up every day for it! You get a choice of eggs, and teas and coffees are unlimited throughout your breakfast (I had at least 3 iced lattes every day! The waitresses just knew to keep getting them for me by the end of the stay!)

We had lazy days by the pool, where if you're lucky and are sat around the pool at about 11:30am, the bar staff will bring round freshly squeezed fruit (non-alcoholic) cocktails with crushed ice. It's a lovely touch, and is always welcome. There is also free chilled water by the pool to keep you hydrated.
On top of these two refreshments, the pool has a swim-up bar, where you can order drinks, or eat lunch while half-submerged in the water. My favourite drink was the fresh coconuts. I had made a few friends with the other guests by the end of our stay and we introduced them to fresh coconuts. (I'm now mourning the availability of fresh coconut back here in Chamonix!)

The 24 hour gym was put to use by us a few times while we were there (we would've used it more, but some of the friends we'd made bought us wine with our dinners, and it's never good working out after a wine or two!!). The gym is quite warm in the mornings (as the sun comes straight in), so we used it later at night - it was empty and nice and cool. The equipment was varied and easy to use. We'd then pop up to the pool afterwards. The pool had no official open and closing times. In fact, the best thing about Mantra is really the complete lack of enforced rules. There are signs up telling you that you are at your own risk, but they are written in a warm and welcoming manner.
There were very few children there while we were there, which was nice for us, but the few kids that were around really seemed to love the pool and kept themselves busy! The majority of the guests were couples, or friends travelling through.
Despite the curfews and coup, we used it as an excuse to cancel our booking on Koh Tao, and chose to extend our stay to stay at Mantra a few more days. We moved to a Love Room, which was a bigger room, and had a full balcony with sun loungers, AND a bath tub on the balcony that also had jacuzzi jets in it, so after dinner, we could relax outside looking out at the sea and revelling in our honeymoon smugness. The bath tub also had a curtain you could pull all the way round, so if you wanted a proper bath, that was also possible!

Because the hotel isn't on the beach, they have solved this by putting on regular FREE transfers from the hotel to either Bophut Fishing Village or Chaweng.
Bophut was ok - we went once during the day, and found it quite empty, and then we went again to the Friday night market, which was buzzing. Neither of us drink, so we weren't there to chill out in a bar watching people walk by, so perhaps that's why it didn't appeal to us very much. The night market was brilliant, and I bought tshirts that were a fraction of the price that the resident stores sold them at.... so make sure you wait until you've been to the night market to get your purchases. There are street stalls selling everything from fake MAC make up, to hand-carved soaps, tshirts, fresh fruit and meat kebabs (chicken, pork, or crocodile(!!!)).
Chaweng is much bigger and sprawling. There is a massive modern shopping centre, with different restaurants upstairs. We ate at the Japanese restaurants outside the hotel a few times (cheap and cheerful - not as fresh or as passionately made as the food at Mantra), but they helped us pass the time between drop offs and picks ups. (for any westerners/Aussies missing any 'home comforts', there is also an international supermarket at one end of the big shopping mall - it's called Tops, I believe - they have Waitrose products.... no really!)
Both are worth checking out, and the beach at Chaweng is definitely worth visiting - it's white sands, warm water, but there was quite a lot of loud music booming out from various venues - a contrast from the chill-out mixes and the tranquility of the hotel!

I found the staff at the hotel, polite, friendly and super efficient. Robert, the GM is always around and makes a special effort to say hello (there is even a free cocktails hour on Saturdays to 'meet the team'! Take advantage, people!). They have a relaxed attitude, and one of the reasons we chose, AND extended our stay here is because the staff made us feel so at home and relaxed. We also work within the hospitality sector, and we know that if the staff are happy, they make you feel happy.

Other lovely touches were the Illy pod-coffee machines in the rooms, the variety of teas on offer, free bottles of drinking water, flip flops (thongs/jandles/sandles) provided for you to use, and the big wooden 'do not disturb' baby that you can put outside your room.

The hotel makes you feel good - from the website, to the emails leading up to your arrival (they send you one counting down the hours til you arrive - it was awesome!), to the welcome and the hospitality throughout your stay.
We will most definitely be back here as soon as we can. The prices were reasonable, it's just getting to Koh Samui from Europe that makes it just that little bit more of a challenge. But we WILL be back, and we are already spreading the word amongst friends.

Room Tip: The Wow rooms have the best views, but can be a bit of a walk from the pool and restaurant. We chos...

Such a shame that it's such a long way up to the hotel of from the road with no way just to go for a walk, there is a shuttle bus daily at certain times but really need looking at time wise. The pool was amazing room ok view from room amazing , but service not good at all reception well not what l except as a reception and restaurant staff could be more attentive Marko was very help full and very present to talk to thank you Marko

Room Tip: Look at the shuttle service times and staff need to be more friendly

Sa waa dee kaa

Absolutely loved this place its so quiet and the views from anywhere in the resort are gorgeous and panoramic..
Yes it is situated on a cliff side thats why the views are so spectacular its not just a walk down the street to the shops but there is a free shuttle available every hr or so to either bophut the local fisherman village which a small strip of market type shops nd restaurants or there is chaweng which has a bit more variety and a nightlife dont worry about having to walk the steep driveway to your room there is a buggy available to take u up whenever u need so dont stress about that. The food was great at the restaurant we ate breakfast lunches and dinner's there and we were never dissapointed...This place is perfect to relax and unwind if u wanna be amoung the hustle and bustle this isnt the place for u but if u just wanna unwind and have breath taking views surrounding u with beautiful friendly staff then I suggest u come and stay here ... free movie library. Breakfast buffet delicious. Free international calls. Rooms with private Jacuzzis. Movie theatre. Gym facilities. Great food. Peace & quiet. Did I mention breath taking views. Free candle as a departing gift. Complimentary return airport transfers. If I could I'd give it 10 stars

Well we decided on the Mantra as we liked the idea of our own balcony with hot tub!!
It didn't disappoint, we arrived and straight away given a drink and a hot towel in reception, we where checked in so quickly that we where in our beautiful room within 10 minutes!

We stayed in one of the love rooms which we found perfect in every way, no issues what so ever apart from a big bug appearing in the shower with me but hey ho its Thailand surely bugs are expected!? The beds and pillows where so comfy, probably one of the best beds I have slept in a long time, the air con was great in the room kept us cool as early May seems to be one of the hottest times to go to Thailand so air con well needed!!
The mini bar was great very well priced we used most days, the only annoying thing for me (being a diet coke addict) was that they wouldn't put that in the mini bar for me to buy as I would have had more (instead went out to buy my own so they lost out as I drink that quite a lot - the staff couldn't understand that I wanted diet cokes in the mini bar so gave up)

Breakfast was AMAZING!! never ever had a bad meal and the tea and coffee was very good!!
We ate in the restaurant a couple of times for dinner and it was lovely, we didn't think it was too badly priced at all, yes cheaper in town but maybe not as nice as the Mantra.

I used the gym most days and was very impressed with that too!

The pool was superb although you could see once it filled up there would just be no where to sit unless you where there early in the morning, which would be far too hot for us to sit in from such an early time, that's why we loved having our own big balcony and jacuzzi no messing for sun loungers as we had two comfy ones on our balcony!

We used room service a couple of times which again was great no complaints, the pizzas where lovely!!

The staff where lovely we had no complaints at all about any of them they where always lovely and friendly and helpful!!

Ok the parts that everyone moans about!

Yes its hilly you are up on the side of a hill, this is stated in EVERY review if you dont want that dont go!!!

The shuttle, yes its free but at very specific times, its cleverly done that between dinner time there are no shuttles I presume the hotel maybe making you hang around to have dinner there which is slightly annoying, so we ended up going out at 5ish most days as we wanted to eat out and only normally having breakfast in the day time by 5 we where hungry!

Now for the most utter annoyance for us, every taxi we tried to get was charging a ridiculous amount of money to get back to the hotel 400 bhats a time from fisherman's or oddly 500 bhats from chaewng if you went out of the free shuttle times, it cost us quite a bit on taxis so if you are the kind that like to be more in the thick of it then don't stay here unless you want to be restricted to times to and from the hotel or the extra cost of the taxis.

We found that the fishermans was dead most nights and really not a lot going on so we went to chaewng most nights to get out and have a few drinks and for dinner, we had some good times there!!

All in all we loved the Mantra just slightly annoyed with the taxi saga, there would be no chance of walking backwards and forwards to the hotel every day in that heat unless you where super super fit.

I would recommend the Mantra all the time.

Oh and also I know I shouldn't but go to Cafe 69 for dinner its on the main road in bophut (get the free shuttle from the hotel and jump off at the fishermans entrance not the main one the one thats hidden) that place has the best food ever and its no1 on trip TripAdvisor for restaurants its amazing!!

Mantra I hope we can come and see you again soon, we miss you and miss Thailand very much!!!

Mantra, though a bit far from the beach, has one of the most stunning views of Koh Phangan and the turquoise waters surrounding Koh Samui. The resort itself had all the amenities we could possibly need - the most amazing breakfasts (especially for coffee lovers!), Thai cooking classes, yoga classes, and an amazing infinity pool! The staff at Mantra were very accommodating and helpful with everything we could possibly need, especially Mark! We had a great time at Mantra and will definitely come back!
