Location:
-It is located in Bangrak which is a small town with very little to do.
-The Bangrak beach is literally across the street which is very family oriented and less crowded than Chaweng Beach
-You must go to Fisherman's village in Bophut. It is an adorable and vibrant street with many restaurants and shops. Worth the 30 minute walk or 3 minute cab drive!
-15 min taxi away from Chaweng beach. We bargained to 200 baht per way

Service:
-The owner is wonderful and the reason we gave a 4 star rating. He went above and beyond to accommodate our needs and make us happy. He even offered to drive us to Bophut for free!

Rooms:
Rooms were basic but had aircon, wifi, mini fridge and a TV. The shower is somewhat separated from the rest of the bathroom, but there is no curtain. You definitely don't splash the whole bathroom with water when you shower.
- Top sheets had mysterious stains, and don't leave any candy out as it will get infested by ants.

BEWARE! THIEVES! USD 200 was stolen from my room!
Rooms have no safe deposit boxes. 2 banknotes of USD 100 each disappeared from my bag after room-cleaning.
Also, all personnel practically not speaking english.
In other aspects hotel is good: clean, big rooms, good location near the beach and 7-eleven.

Given the price we paid (about £13 ($20 or 600 Baht)), we were not expecting much from Samui Tonrak Residence, but were really pleasantly surprised for our 1 night stay in late February, 2013.

The hotel is on the opposite side of the road to Bangrak Beach and don't be fooled, this hotel may have a Bophut address but it is 2 to 3km from the action of Fisherman's Village. Bangrak is a quiet town although having said that it does have a few bars and restaurants and enough to keep you occupied within walking distance for a few days. It is also where one of the boats across to Ko Phangan leaves from so convenient if you're heading that way.

In terms of the room, we were on the second (top) floor and there is no lift so be prepared for some heavy lifting. The room itself was spacious with a double bed with bedside tables, a fridge, a table and 2 chairs, tv, aircon, wardrobe, tiny balcony and an ensuite shower/ wet room.

The sliding doors into the room don't shut all the way leaving an annoying (and unsafe?) 1 cm gap which seems to be quite common in Thailand for reasons I really don't understand. We also had a nasty odour coming from our bathroom during the time we were there which was rather disgusting.

For the price though this hotel was fine for what we needed and very good value for money.

Just got back from Samui, I have stayed in four different budget hotels in Samui and in my opinion this is far the best , the room was spotless, well equipped with small fridge ,TV, and air con room, I hope that my review doesn't make the owners charge more , I paid 600 baht a night that's about £13 ,and that's per room not each ! Well situated and over the road to the near deserted but wonderful Bangrak beach, give it a go , excellent for the money.
