“Good value for money, excellent beach!!”
Reviewed 14 March 2010

My husband and I stayed here just before Christmas 2009, we thought that, generally, THE WHITE HOUSE was good value for money, we got a fruit basket when we arrived and a nice coconut drink, which was lovely, our room was clean and tidy, mind you, don't try to use the jacuzzi in the bathroom, it doesn't work!
Breakfast was good, but generally the food was not great if you stayed there for lunch or dinner, and it's more expensive than everywhere else, we only eat there once. Just across the road from the hotel is the best restaurant in the island, and probably, the cheapest too! "The Orchid" the two girls serving there were so nice, effective and friendly...we even kept going for dinners there when we moved to a different hotel in the island!
The water in the swimming pool tasted horrible, not that I drank it in regular basis, but if you swam there, not very pleasant, it wasn't really a problem with the gorgeous sea just metres away! no wonders the pool was always empty!

Choeng Mong is very convenient place to be, is nice and quiet, and only 10 minutes on a motorbike from Chaweng beach where you can do all your shopping! motorbikes are a great way to move around on the island, they are very cheap, (around 3 or 4 pounds a day) the beach is very nice, just next door is "SALA SAMUI", which is great and very stylish resort, we used to go for drinks at night...
If you're interested in getting a suit made, there is a tailor if you walk along the beach, Santos, he was excellent, my husband had 2 suits and two shirts, all made of beautiful silk for under £200 in just 4 days!

Over all very nice, we even liked more than our second hotel in Ko Samui, which was twice the price!

We only stayed 3 nights because of the two issues i mentioned in the title of this review.

Good hotel, I'd say it was value for the money we paid, but perhaps on Koh Samui there are other places that are better value for the same money...

The hotel is right on the beach, excellent staff, very friendly. Pick up and transfer from the airport was free and efficient. Beach great - fine white sand, clean. But water not very transparent - unlike at Chaweng. But I noticed that is what all beaches at the North of the island are like (Chong Mon, Bophut, Maenam, Bangrak). Breakfast served outside near the beach - nothing to complain about, good choice of food, staff nice. Free internet and 4 hours of Thai massage (complimentary) was a great bonus.

Two MAJOR issues with the room.
We had the Junior Suite, which would be value for money in terms of size, BUT the mattress was HARD as wood - we could not sleep, our backs hurt immensely after night 1, and therefore we had to switch hotels after 3 nights (White House was fully booked so they couldn't move us to a different room).

The other sufficient drawback for us (but perhaps some would find this minor) is that the room is almost completely DARK due to the tinted windows and the fact that the room is on the ground floor and has a garden view. The gardens are lush and beautiful - like small jungle - but it does not let any light through. Perhaps, rooms on the 1st floor are a better choice if you want more light?.. Can't say as we didn't see any other rooms.
Furniture is outdated, as are the TVs. Everything is very basic. Shower okay, no problems with water pressure - but be prepared, water it is a general problem on the island, no matter how expensive the hotel. Bad soundproofing at this hotel as well - we could hear every word of our neighbours next door.

Do not ask the hotel to arrange for a rental car. Have them call Thai Car Rental - or do it yourself - they are much cheaper and with MUCH better cars. The one we rented from White House was an ancient wreck and it was overpriced.

Lastly, our major emotional dissapointment with this hotel was this. We booked through Web Sawadee, so when we realized how bad our room and bed were we emailed them about the situation to see if there was any chance to get a refund if we moved to a different hotel. They then talked to the hotel manager and replied to us that the manager claimed we never said anything about the beds to the hotel staff!!! We did, of course, tell the receptionist on duty after the very first unsleepable night, and they put some extra blankets underneath the sheets - but that did little to help. We felt very upset that the management would respond that way.

We eventually found a new hotel just by walking along the beach (Chaweng) - which was probably the best hotel room (so much more than a room!) I have ever stayed in: Samui Resotel & Spa. See my review.

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights over New Year.
Hotel grounds are lovely but pool area small and disappointing, but then who needs a pool with such a beautiful beach.
Room was OK nothing special and bathroom desperately needed updating.

I'm not one to complain generally but I feel I really must on this occassion. We were subjected to a compulsory charge of 3,000bht (approx £60) each for a New Years Eve Gala whether we were attending or not we had to pay. We knew about this when we booked but as there wasn't availability anywhere else in the resort we agreed to pay thinking that for the money they would put on an excellent show with great food, fireworks etc. What a dissappointment - it was the worst food we had by a long way during our trip to Thailand, entertainment was awful and actually painful to listen to. The price didn't even include any drinks during your meal. 3,000 bht is a lot of money in Thailand and we felt totally ripped off. We ate what we could of our meal, mainly filling ourselfs up on the fruit (as were most others) and left. We went along the beach to our favorate bar and had a great new year without the White House. Some hotels in the bay set off fireworks at midnight but the White House was not one of them.

This bay is so beautiful and I would highly recommend it to everyone, we will definately be returning but not to the White House. Probably stay at O' Soleil Bungalows or Honey Cottages next time, these were much nicer and far cheaper.

Myself and my new hubby got married on Koh Samui on December 2nd, and we had 36 people attending in total. All of which stayed at The White House, chosen because of it's location, beach and great offer which they gave us. Our group ranged from ages 4 to 85 and I can easily say it was perfect for everyone! We stayed there for 9 nights, and we're more than happy!

I have to mention Achara, who was in charge of reception. She and the reception team were amazing. Even down to pre-arrival emails and helping with wedding flowers... give them a challenge and within a couple of hours they had an answer and had helped tremendously. Every time we walked past reception they were so friendly and would always assist with anything they could...

The first night we got there, there was 17 of us, a UK family and an Oz family meeting in the middle for the wedding. The White House laid out a table on the beach for us... it was perfect and definately a sign of good things to come.

I would highly recommend anyone to stay at The White House. All 36 of our group were really really happy with our choice of hotel and we really couldn't have wished for a more perfect way to make our guests so comfortable.

Thank you again, will definately come back to stay next time we're in Koh Samui.

It was perfect. Very good design, there are a lot of plants and flowers in garden. Room was big and clear. Among advantages free wi-fi and computer room as well. Good sandy beach is suitable for swimming and playng with children, tasty meal at breakfast. One disappointment is SPA. It is not professional like we expected.

We spent a very relaxing week at the White House. The room was huge with a separate sitting area, and fridge. Very clean. Large, comfy beds. Large bathrooms. Excellent service. Everyone was super nice and welcoming. The whole hotel is beautiful with lots of plants, water pots, and statues. You feel like you're in another world. There's also a beautiful pool by the restaurant by the beach. Free breakfast and computers w/internet in the library (no wifi in rooms).
If you're looking to party and be around other hotels/shopping/restaurants, this might not be the place for you. But if you want to relax in your own little paradise, then you need to check out the White House.

This hotel looks like Ankor Wat - the World Heritage Site in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Which is fine and interesting, but why name it The White House? I liked the free pick-up and return service at the airport. Also the welcome drink upon arrival - much better than standing in line in the lobby.

The room we stayed in for 3 nights was interesting. The bed was large and comfy and we loved the free WI-FI in the room. The bathroom had a toilet that was at least 6" higher than normal. It was so high, by girlfriend's feet could not touch the ground! I wound up dragging a foot stool in there so she could get some leverage... To shower, we had a choice. There was a hose and nozzle right next to the toilet and there was a bath tub a few feet over from that. I used the hose once and got water all over the floor and toilet and steps to the tub. Thereafter, I used the bathtub - squatting or sitting down, soaping up and using the short hose and nozzle attached to rinse off. It has got to be the weirdest arrangement of any hotel I've been in, although quite luxurious compared to many.

The fitness room is above the lobby. No aircon, but good enough do some push-ups and stretch out. The equipment is cheap and there are no free weights. Typical hotel fitness room.

Going to and from your room, you walk through a jungle setting. The gardeners keep it well trimmed though. The pool is quite small and we didn't use it. We did use the padded lounges once and went into the water on the beach. No rocks with a gentle slope - very nice. We enjoyed the excellent breakfast buffet each morning. We walked along the shore a couple times, enjoying the ocean view. Each hotel and resto sets up tables on the sand at sundown and offers candlelight dinner. Right next door they had a live band. There are more massage booths on this beach than I could count.

We took a ride to Chaweng one day, but it started raining and we hung out at McDo's until it stopped. Was glad to get back to our quiet home away from home. The tour we enjoyed the most was Angthong National Park with kayaking, snorkeling and lunch on Paluay Island.

The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was always clean when we returned. They even left us some mangosteens... Overall, I liked this place and would not mind staying here again - although I would like to explore another part of the island.
