We visited the Big Buddah around 11am and it was packed with tour buses and tourists. They tell you to be respectful of the temple and use the scarves and kimonos provided to dress modestly which I fully agree with but then they have stalls selling food and cheap souvenirs right next to the statues at the entrance. The Big Buddah statue itself is very impressive but the whole commercialisation surrounding it is cheap and tacky. I suppose you have to go as its the island's main attraction but don't expect a cultural experience or you'll be sadly disappointed.

Yep, it's a Big Buddha so it does what it says on the tin!
Worth a short visit, but go up the steps, take a few photos and that's about it. We arrived late afternoon so not as hot and busy.
Leave shoes at the bottom of the steps, and ladies if you forgot to bring something to cover your shoulders look to the right where scarves, sarongs etc are hanging on a rail and are free for your use while there.
It's not too well looked after and there are some dogs wandering around which had left a couple of piles of poop at the top, so watch where you step!

I liked it very much, let's start with that.
It is very imprressive if you"ve not seen one huge statue of Buddha before.
It is a medium area that is dominated by the temple and the statue of course.
there are many vendors & shops all around ,as you would expect , with nice although mundane wares you can find anywhere on the island. I snapped a few pics, have a look.I spent a short 15 minutes but you could spend an hour easy at this nice place.

Of all the many temples I saw in Thailand this was the most garish and pointless. Go to the Wat down the road, it's much nicer and more impressive.
