“A peaceful holiday in paradise”
Reviewed 12 March 2010

We have been to Tongsai Bay four times because we love it so much and part of me wonders why I am writing this review as it is the tranquility that attracts us back each time and we wouldn't want too many people in the know ! However I err on the side of generosity
as the hotel is just the right size to feel exclusive and keeps its integrity even during the major holiday times. We stay in the cottages which are nestled in the fabulous gardens - it is set on quite a slope but you can ring for a buggy at any time to take you to beach or restaurant .The staff are so friendly and obliging and the food is fantastic ... we love the fact there is no unwanted music emanating from the eating or public areas during the day - just some subtle stuff during the evening. Having said that it's not completely without life as they put on special themed evenings such as full moon dinners on the beach, Thai nights and barbecues. The local town is 15 minutes away by taxi if you want a change but we find we rarely do as we can't drag ourselves away from feeling so cosseted in such gorgeous surroundings. Look out for Mark the assistant manager, his relaxed but professional manner sets the tone of the whole place ... ask for Lan's special yoghurt drink at breakfast and sit back in the colonial style dining room , with palm trees and the sea in front of you and be prepared to grind to a very relaxing halt.

My husband and I visited Tongsai Bay in February with our daughters aged 11 and 9 to celebrate my 50th birthday. I had done a lot of research to find a good hotel and carefully read through the reveiws on Trip Advisor, emailing several reviewers to ask questions and everyone was most helpful. I the end I chose to book room 506/516 which was a Grand Villa with another bedroom attached. We were not disappointed. Some reviews have pointed out that the hotel is in need of updating but I felt that the lack of glitz was part of the charm of the property. We just loved our Grand Villa which was spacious and airy, I enjoyed a number of baths on the balcony and the private dinner we enjoyed there was excquisite. In fact the food was of an excellent quality in the hotel and we particularly enjoyed Chef Chom's Thai restaurant. The breakfast was amazing, there was so much choice and everything was freshly cooked to order, it was really, really good and of couse the staff are a delight, nothing is too much trouble and there was always a smile and a greeting for you. Our daughters also really enjoyed the time there and even though the hotel was full at one point during our stay you never really noticed it, there were always sun beds and the pool was lovely.
I would recommend this hotel very highly and really enjoyed my stay here. Thank you to all the trip advisor reviewers who helped me make this decision and thank you Tongsai Bay. The only bad bit of the holiday was returning after a long flight to a dark and freezing Heathrow! If you get the chance go, you won't regret it.

The culture and people there are individually just excellent and we just love the atmosphere and facilities! Unfortunatelly, they are not able to manage things in organized way even though it was carefully scheduled. They are not able to manage if anything unexpected happens before 10:00 am since there's NO MANAGEMENT at that particular time. If you happened to experience some incidents such as we experienced (no lagguege pick up on the date of departure early morning, even though we repeatedly called the guest relation) they would just tell you "There's no manager there at this time...." and won't be able to listen to you.
At our departure, the guest relation guy promissed us that the general manager would contact us upon his return from business trip to Europe, but all we got is a pointless e-mail from Executive Asst Manager...this is so sad because basically we love the place...we hope that they we take sincere action towards about the promise if they claim that they are descent luxury hotel.

My wife and I stayed at the Tongsai Bay from 6-20 Feb 10. We decided to book the hotel’s own transport from the airport to the hotel. The car and staff were waiting for us, they loaded the baggage and we were ushered into a cool, air conditioned and very comfortable vehicle and we were immediately offered a lovely cold damp towel to freshen ourselves. The drive to the hotel took all of 15 minutes and cost £10 each way.
Check-in was fast and we were taken to our room by a member of staff. Our initial impression of our cottage suite was that it was a little dark but, as the holiday progressed, we came to like the décor. The room was as advertised and my wife loved the outside bath. The balcony had a lovely sea view and was furnished with 2 x sun beds, 2 x chairs and a table.
There are many steps but the golf buggy service is very good indeed; just call and they respond very quickly.
Food in the hotel was of a very good standard; we particularly enjoyed the food and sea breezes in the beach restaurant Polad. As identified in other reviews the beach is not sand but generally is made up of a very fine gravel. We found walking on it not all that uncomfortable but did wear beach sandals when walking from the sea to the showers near the pool. Sandals were not needed when walking along the waters edge. Swimming in the lovely warm sea in February was just simply marvellous. We used both the adults’ only pool and the main pool. Both were excellent; the adults pool was very peaceful and relaxing and the main pool delightful if a little noisy at times. Sun beds were plentiful and there was no dawn rush to bag a good one.
We used the hotel spa on 2 occasions and found it very good. Surprisingly, they did not have an in-house manicurist though we have been advised by the hotel manager that this is being rectified and will be available shortly.
Hotel staffs were universally very helpful, courteous and available when needed without being intrusive. The Hotel’s personnel are undoubtedly the hotels best asset; from the young lady who cleaned our room to the beach boys and gardeners all were fantastic!
We did manage to get out and about. Chewang was not a particularly nice place to visit but it does have some good restaurants and shops (including 3 x Boots chemists!). Touts were a pain and were very much in your face trying to sell time shares etc. The touts were not local Thai people but, in the main, were gap year British and Australian students. We found the most effective way of handling the touts was to firmly state that we were not interested and to keep walking. Bo Phut was lovely with good restaurants and shops and is definitely worth a visit. Chong Mong is the closest village to the Tongsai and is about a 5-7 mins taxi ride away. It has a number of restaurants and shops and we found a nice Indian curry house (next to the Lord Nelson pub); good food at a very good price. We used the hotel's own taxi service and found it to be most reliable and of a similar cost to the local so called meter taxis. The hotel's taxi was always on time, the vehicles were fairly new, in good condition with safe drivers. We also pre booked our return trips with the hotel. This worked well and we were never let down.
In all, the hotel was everything we wanted and expected. The acid test is would we return; in a flash!
Thank you Tongsai Bay for a fantastic holiday

Tongsai is a wonderful resort and my wife and I will always remember it fondly. The private beach is very nice, but not as picturesque as other beaches in Samui. The restaurant by the beach was good and breakfast was excellent. We appreciated that they have an a la carte breakfast in addition to the buffet. The room was clean and the balcony was very spacious (as big as a normal hotel room). We didn’t use the outside tub, but it looked very inviting. Although a warning to those who do not like to climb stairs, ask for a room not on the hillside. Our room was 201 stairs up from the beach and 98 above the nearest cart path. It’s great for privacy, but may not be great for everyone.
My major issue with the resort is that it was billed as a 5 star resort, and it simply isn't. It is a very nice 4 star property. There were a few small things that we noticed which prevent me from giving the property the top rating. For example, the property is starting to show signs of its age, many buildings could benefit from a new coat of paint. The staff was good, but not always the most attentive. Check-out took 15 minutes for an unknown reason. The main pool was OK, but not as new or amazing as those infinity pools at some more modern resorts. This resort is one of the oldest on the island, and it’s starting to show a little. Lastly, the staff turns off your A/C when they clean your room (twice a day). While I understand the resort’s environmental concerns, it should be a decision left to the guest, especially after having to climb 201 stairs. The Four Seasons and Peninsula never turned off our A/C without our consent. While I understand these issues are minor, and overall the resort is very nice, I can’t give it the same rating as some other hotels I’ve stayed at.

Beach - It's very course and difficult to walk on. However, it's private and is on a lagoon.

Pool - There are two - Our favorite was the adults-only crescent moon pool.

Food - Outstanding! Our favorite was Chef Chom's. The Thai food is definitely hot there and so delicious it makes my mouth water just remembering.

Service - The service is above and beyond anything we have ever experienced. The staff goes the extra mile to ensure you are happy.

Room - We had a beachfront suite and were upgraded to a mountainside cottage. Besides the steps to the cottage, the cottage was well worth the trip. Private and secluded and quite nicely furnished.

Recommendations - Try the restaurants, they are excellent. The spa is great as well.
