We stayed at the Zazen for just 3 nights which, quite frankly, was too short.......but it seemed a lot longer. It's a wonderful resort with an abundance of charm both in the surroundings and the calm, relaxed but very attentive attitude of the management and staff. It's a cozy and romantic resort on the shore of a quiet beach but close enough to Fisherman's village where there is a good choice of restaurant and bars......the Billabong Surf Club has good atmoshere and live music despite it's pretentious name. Although the resort, and bungalows, are right on the beach, in early December, it is not too convenient for midnight skinny dipping as the waves are a bit strong and flotsam could cause some discomfort! Better to rent a car ( but not the clapped out Suzuki Jeep from the resort - this is a real boneshaker which won't turn corners or get you any admiring glances!) - and go to Big John's Seafood Restaurant on the other side of the island. This is an idylic beach, again with few people, where you can sample cocktails and fresh seafood, watch the sunset and then go skinny dipping in the moonlight. Recommended! It's then only a 20 minute drive back to the Zazen for a few more cocktails. Our regular bartender at the Zazen, 'Boy', was very attentive to our needs and cunningly passed off a 'Black Russian' cocktail as 'Planter's Punch'. Little did he know that we live in Moscow and know full well what a Black Russian cocktail is.....but he fixed them with great gusto.....and after a few of those, you're ready for a bit of fun.......and we did! We also wen't to Chaweng beach, which although a very nice beach, is crowded, and resembles a Spanish Costa resort. The Spa at the Zazen has been criticised as expensive. Yes it is, but it's worth every penny and you are on holiday after all! It's a real pampering experience carried out in the most serene environment. Sure, you can walk a hundred metres along the beach and get pummeled and mutilated for 200 Thb but you'll be aching on the plane home. Better to spend your 200 Thb in the adjacent beach bar where you are served the most amazing thai food by a spooky but very friendly bartender/waiter. All in all, we couldn't fault the Zazen, the bungalows are cozy and very tastefully decorated, the bed is sufficiently firm and the bathroom is outdoors (no it's not a camp site, you don't have to walk outside) where they have a bowl of Siamese fighting fish to keep you entertained whilst doing what comes naturally. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and will certainly try to return!

My husband and I had an absolutely beautiful wedding at Zazen. From the very start the professionalism of the staff made us feel sure that even though we were planning a wedding from so far away, all of what we were looking for would happen. It was so easy, the whole wedding was organized over a few e-mails and when we arrived, everything that was promised was delivered with professionalism and a personal touch that we could not hope for at a bigger resort. Zazen was an absolutely beautiful place for the ceremony, the accommodation spectacular, the attention to detail fantastic and the food heavenly! Zazen staffs were involved in the ceremony and made us feel like part of the family, it was truly a magical day! We can't wait to visit our tree, planted during the ceremony, on our next visit to Zazen. We would highly recommend Zazen for your wedding, or a stay in Samui!

The quintessential "boutique" resort! My husband and I have travelled about 70 countries and lived in about 15 between us, and in all of our
travel experiences, never encountered a place with such careful attention to detail, such helpful staff, such understastement and taste as at the Zazen. If you are looking for a five or six star experience and "luxury" this is not the place for you. If you are looking fo ready-made activities, big buffets, lots of activity etc, then this is also not the place for you. But, if you are looking for a unique, artsy, tasteful, personal, design, cosy and personable, intimate resort, then the Zazen is IT. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the service and rooms. All 29 rooms are equipped with DVD Player, iPod speakers, and (free wireless). The beds are comfortable (very important detail). The bathrooms are all open air, equipped with your own pet fish, "so you wont get lonely" as the Zazen explains. The small Spa is wonderful: we got massages every other day. The Restaurant is one of the best we ate at during our 12 day stay. Again prices are a very good value. In terms of activities,
the Zazen arranged a Scuba Certification Course through "100 Degrees East" Dive Shop and I was very pleased with their personalized service
as well (customized to my schedule and pace). The Zazen screens their service-providers and thanks to the owner's long knowledge of reputable tour operators, you can get the best companies to cater to your needs. We also took a 2 hour cooking class right at the Zazen kitchen with feisty, competent, Pla, one of their chefs. We came away with recipes, inspiration and ate our own lunch we cooked!! In terms of location, the Zazen is on the north side of the Island and away from all the broohaha at Chaweng. But it is close enough via local transport (tuk tuk) or an inexpensive 10 minute taxi ride to town for hustle and bustle. What we also enjoyed very much was that most guests were couples in their 30's and 40's mostly without children, so the place was very quiet (though the Zazen welcomes children).
Drawbacks: Our timing was poor as we hoped the monsoon season would be tapering off by end of November. But alas, it was not. We had warm weather, but overcast days and some rain. Ideal time to go (and busiest) is December-March. Also, if you expect long, isolated, quiet beaches, the Zazen location is not optimal for that. The beach is small and there are many other hotels etc on the strip of beach. We were never bothered by the noise or anything, but I share the detail to temper expectations. If you want isolated beaches, etc, then
head to Koh Tao (another island close to Samui). I recommend the Zazen
without any reservations!

My children and I have just returned from a beautiful week of relaxation at Zazen. The food was magnificent and the resort divine. It could not have been better. We can't wait to return!

The moment you enter the path leading to the resort, the atmosphere is inviting and relaxing. The gardens are beautiful, rooms are artistically decorated, and the reception area is welcoming. The resort-wide free internet access and availability of DVDs certainly added color to our vacation, especially when the torrential rains continued for days in Samui! The food at Zazen Restaurant is, without exaggeration, simply wonderful. We had a scrumptious Thai Discovery Seafood set for dinner (as an Asian myself, I was impressed!). The Asian dishes are creative, without losing its authenticity! But most of all, I am impressed by the staff. They are well-trained, very professional, and pleasant. Having lived in Thailand for more than two years, I must say this was my first encounter with excellent Thai service. Kudos to everyone at Zazen who made our pre-honeymoon unforgettable.
