“We were disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2011

We booked the Bandara for the second leg of our honeymoon (after staying at an AMAZING hotel called the Chedi in Chiang Mai) after reading lots of good reviews on Trip Advisor.
Overall, we were pretty disappointed in the Bandara and as it claims to be the best spa hotel in Asia, I dread to think what the others are like.
I think partly it could have been that we had just had a week at a really brilliant luxury hotel in Chiang Mai, and the Bandara was the same price so we were expecting the same quality.
Our room was shabby, sun bleached orange curtains, plastic cover on the balcony lounger, wires showing out of the bathroom lights, outdated shower. Our room was overlooking the bar and we were worried that it would be really noisy but actually it wasn't. Our balcony door was broken when we got there and we immediately called reception and they sent up the repair guy. He did a botch job on the door then left. We called back and he came back, he added tubing so that there wasn't an inch gap all the way up the door, and even though it was not perfect, we didn't want to move rooms in case we got put above the pool, so we settled with the just-mended door. We then realised the air con wasn't working, so had to call the repair man back. It was getting quite embarrassing now but he was friendly though he didn't speak any English.
Room sorted, we got on with our holiday. There were quite a lot of families with kids at the hotel, and the remainder of people there were honeymooning couples! Breakfasts were adequate but not great. Quite a big selection of food but it all looked a bit tired. We only went to the main pool which was nice and big enough to swim. There were lots of plates around that weren't cleared up all afternoon. It was messy, in fact the whole hotel was a bit messy and tatty. Staff were very friendly, but they generally didn't have very good English and when we tried to ask how to get the shared taxis the lady didn't understand our question. That said, their standard of English was much better than our Thai...
The standard of housekeeping also wan't great. Always clean but always forgot something each day so we kept having to call reception for more toilet roll etc, which was annoying.
Bophut was a really good place to be, and it was about a ten minute walk along the beach to get to the village. The beach was REALLY hard to walk on but doable. Loads and loads of lovely restaurants in the village - Thai, Italian, Japanese etc. All we went to were good and great food. Not cheap though, about the same price as a meal out in the UK and wine too expensive to get (beer and cocktails pretty cheap though). We had cocktails a few nights at a really cute bar right at the very end of the village (opposite end to the beach) - really cheap and friendly bar tenders, I think it was their house and they had the bar in their front yard - much more individual than some of the bars, some of which were quite wine bar-y.
Instead of turning right out of the Bandara to walk down the beach to Bophut, I'd also recommend turning left to the beach front restaurants, most of which were really really cheap with tasty food and cocktails. Very romantic being right by the sea. Most weren't posh at all, quite informal, but cuter and cheaper than Bophut. There were also a number of massage booths on the beach here, which were SO cheap, can't remember how much now but dirt cheap, especially compared to the Bandara spa prices (though we never worked out where the spa was and weren't given a tour of the hotel or anything). A few nights we had a beachside massage to the sound of the waves, followed by dinner and cocktails. Divine.
Bophut village also had some great shops, a few vintagey places which surprised me. Not cheap but not expensive compared to the UK. The Friday night street market was fun, good for cheap dresses and presents.
We did a few day trips, including to Ang Thong national marine park (amazing, booked via a place in Bophut).
So, Bophut is a brilliant place to stay for a chilled out holiday with loads of bars and restaurants, quite near other beaches for day trips. A very touristy place though, completely set up for tourists - mostly from Russia and the UK, and with prices to match.
The Bandara was OK, but too expensive for what it was and didn't match our expectations. The Hansar hotel down the beach looked much nicer and we wished we'd stayed there. That said, it was probably partly because we'd just come from a really luxurious hotel, and we still had a brilliant time.

We arrived at Bandara after 3 flights from Austraila to find a divine villa with our own plunge pool, champagne on ice, beautiful linen and "happy Honeymoon" in flowers on our bed. The villa was exceptional and the service was fantastic. Location in Bophut was great too, not far to Fishermans Village and only 5-8 minutes in a tuk-tuk to Chaeweng Beach. We loved Koh Samui, the food, the people and Bandara. It was a very special honeymoon. Highly recommend this resort. If your keen for some fun, we even hired a Harley Davidson for a couple of days instead of the traditional scooter. What a blast!

Room Tip: Definitely pay a little extra (very reasonable) for a Villa. We really enjoyed our late night dips i...

I've read the reviews here before choosing Bandara.......and I had no regrets!

Friendly & warm staff especially Nueng in the cafe....the hotel has absolutely stunning landscape and convenient to get around.

However one neg point is the water chokage in the bathroom of Rm 312.....

It is indeed a land of thousand smiles......The Thais are genuinely friendly people and our stay in this resort was a memorable one!

Room Tip: Its better to choose the upper floors as there were too many stray cats in our balcony....the rooms...

This was a last minute holiday plan. We booked the day before we arrived and decided to upgrade to a villa for the private pool. Best decision ever! The villa was all we could have wanted... comfortable, spotless, beautiful and quiet. Now add to that an outside bath and rain shower on one side and a private yard with a cabana and pool on the other side.

We didn't want to leave our room very often but when we did, it was worth it. Excellent spa treatments. Excellent. The food at the beachfront restaurant was delicious. And the best mojito I have ever sipped, was here! Close enough to the main village (10 min walk, partially on sand if you take the short route) but far enough away for peace and quiet.

The staff were outstanding; always a smile and willing to assist you or find a way to make your stay more relaxing. It was my first time at this resort and they won me over. I would return here in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: We were in Villa 705 and I can say it was perfect!

My girlfriend and I had 10 nights in a pool villa rooom and we were so happy we chose Bandara. We did a fair bit of research before choosing this hotel as it was our first time to Koh Samui and it didn't dissapoint. Just the little things like free wi-fi and daily shuttle buses really made our stay.

The room was lovely, the pools top class and the Spa lived up to its reputation as one of the best on the island. We mixed up our time with getting out and exploring and lazing around the hotel. When we wanted to explore the staff were happy to assist us plan activities and when we wanted to laze we didn't want for anything and the resort pools and beach were so relaxing. I have to make reference to the breakfast setup here also, fresh food, friendly service and a great selection. Tip, ask for a freshly made latte to go with your breakfast.

The setting on Bophut Beach is a perfect spot to explore the island of Koh Samui and it's surrounds. Being on the northern beach you are close to the ferries/boats to Koh Phangan and Ang Thong Marine Park. The restaurant at the hotel is great with its setting right on the beach but you need to try some of the restaurants in the neighbouring fisherman's village also. It's only a 300 metre walk along the beach to where the walkway starts and then another 800m until you hit the village. The Friday night market is a must see.

Even though we went coming up to the monsoon season we got extrememly lucky with the weaather and their was enough going on to keep us entertained. I'm sure it would only be better in the peak season. Chewang Beach is only a 10 minute taxi away which worked out perfectly for our needs as we could head there for some excitement but not be stuck in the middle of it.

Great stay and highly recommend Bandara Resort

Room Tip: Go the pool villa if at all possible. Otherwise ask for a room away from the road.

My husband and I were getting married in Thailand on Koh Samui. We stayed at Bandara to celebrate that special event. We stayed in one of the villas - which are very beautiful. The staff at Bandara were aware of our special day and when we checked in they had a gorgeous spread on the bed that said "Happy Honeymoon" and then a man delivered a tray with some chilled champage, fresh local fruit and cake. it was so beautiful and thoughtful.

The stay itself was great. Their laundry service is very professional. The villas are a very short walk to the beach.

We never tried the restaurant.. we like to eat the more authentic thai places.

Their staff are so friendly and helpful - we would for sure go back.

Room Tip: The villas are a beautiful place to stay.

My husband and I have just returned from a two week holiday here. We stayed in a Pool Villa (room number 726) which I can confirm was everything we envisaged! Our room was always kept very clean and well stocked with regards to clean towels, sheets, mosquito repellent etc. The only downside to the room was the fact that the mini-bar charges were extremely high. Example tin of coca-cola was 70 baht from the mini-bar - where the same could be purchased opposite the hotel (Family Mart store) for 14 baht. Our pool was clearned down daily and our garden kept very tidy. The outside bath and rain forest shower was also a wonderful addition to the room. There was also a shower inside the villa for those of you not wishes to shower au natural! The villa was very private and secluded.
Our accommodation included breakfast which offered up a variety of offerings (egg station, breads, cold meats, cheese, jams, thai and wonderful little pastries). The service here was very good - especially the lovely waitresses Nueng and Pu. There were three pools and we tended to use the one directly near the beach. All three pools were clean and there was always a number of sun loungers to choose from. The beach sand was a tad coarser than expected but again, kept very clean.
The Bandara was in a good location, with easy access to taxis, mini-vans etc which would take you to Nathon, Chewang Beach and Lima Beach. Don't forget to barter on the price!
There are a number restaurants close by - Terrazze being my favourite Italian in the whole of Koh Samui! The famous Fisherman's Village is also a short walk away (by beach or a slightly longer route by main road) where a variety of restaurants, bars and shops were just awaiting to sell you their delights. (We found all shops tended to sell the same goods) We ate in a number of these restaurants and did not ever suffer any tummy aches etc . I would recommend an Indian called Koh I Noor and the Thai Smile as two of my favourites here. On a Friday evening there is also a Flea market which is also a must see!!
The only down side were the prices in the hotel. I could not understand why these were so high if purchasing trips, food or drinks. We saw many, many visitors using the Family Mart store across the road for soft drinks, beer, crisps, cosmetics etc. (We done exactly the same!) and bringing these back to the beach or rooms. Vendors on the beach would also turn up at lunchtimes to offer bar-b-q chicken skewers and fruit.
I must give praise for the free Wi-Fi that was available both in your room and around the resort. I must also encourage you to use the hotel Spa for any massage treatments as they were wonderful! Cheaper options are available outside the resort but I am not sure that these are professional enough for me!
Excursions were booked outside of the resort - and we found the cheapest place to book these were at the little travel agent over the road from the hotel. I would also recommend the use of their laundary service which was about 40 baht per kilo as well. We used this service twice over the holiday and everything came back cleaned and ironed lovely!!
Overall, our holiday was thoroughly enjoyed - but in honesty we wished that we had booked a two center holiday and included the sights of Bangkok as well. You really only need one week in Koh Samui in which to see everything it has to offer!

Room Tip: We opted for a Pool Villa which also gave you a terrace area with a large plunge pool.
