“A Touch of Heaven in a Tropcial Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2010

My new husband and I have just returned from a wedding/honeymoon/holiday all inclusive at the Bandara Resort. Our family and friends also traveled with us to celebrate our Traditional Thai wedding held at the Resort. We were just overwelhmed by the extravagance and splendour of our Thai wedding ceremony. We left it all up to the Bandara Team to organise the wedding and we can not faulter a thing. It was certainly our dream wedding come true and more. We had never attended a Thai wedding but I must say, it is so different to the traditional Western Style. The ceremony was conducted on the beach, monks and all. This was our wish and the Bandara Team made it happen. They went out of their way to grant our every wish. Nothing was ever a problem and everything was perfect. They even celebrated with us making it all more special. Nothing went wrong. OMG I wish everyone could experience what we experienced. We stayed in a Villa room and our guests stayed in both Deluxe and Superior rooms. We were treated like royality and our guests were made very welcome by all staff at Bandara. There is so much to say but of course I cannot brag on forever. If there is anyone out there that wishes to ask any questions about weddings at Bandara, accommodation and even things to do in Koh Samui, please do not hestitate to ask. We loved it so much we tried to go back after our return to Australia but time was not on our side. We will go back for sure there is no doubt.
P.S will hopefully be posting some pics soon once I get around to it.

We've just returned from a 10 night stay at the Bandara and couldn't recommend it highly enough. To be fair, we have only 1 resort in Barbados and just normal hotels to compare with but we found the Bandara to be absolutely wonderful.

The grounds are big and spacious with lovely garden areas that you meander through to reach the beachfront. It is evident the grounds are looked after and maintained at a very high standard. The pools are fabulous, with one very long one in the centre nearer to reception area (and a kiddies pool nearby) then the infinity pool on the beachfront with a fabulous view of Bophut Beach and Koh Pgangan. I do agree with other reviews that it's a shame the pool bar is so quiet and virtually empty in the evenings.

We found the reception area to be very spacious with a lovely water feature (rectangular shaped pond). The hotel kindly upgraded us for free to a deluxe room which was lovely. The room had a king size bed which was extremely comfy with luxurious bedding and big pillows (4 pillows were provided). The day beds in the room and on the balcony are a nice touch too. We had a bath separate to the shower which was useful, and also the DVD player came in handy (with all the DVDs you can buy in the village!).

Maid service is great as the room was always made up to a high standard and fresh beach towels always provided which are useful for the sun loungers. There is also free internet access (2 computers) and we never had a problem using them although it was very quiet.

Breakfast was amazing with a huge variety of food available. Ranging from pancakes and syrup, fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, sweet pastries through to hot cooked food (eggs, bacon, omlettes etc) and even fried rice, dim sum and other daily Thai treats! The fruit juice is yummy too, especially Guava juice.

Fisherman's village is only a short walk away - the quickest route is taking a right at the beachfront and a 5 min walk along the beach (past the Anantara) where you can then join the paved walkway for a couple more minutes into the village. The village caters for all food needs and we mainly ate Thai but also had steak at The Shack, and a burger at Billabong. We didn't eat dinner at the Bandara mainly based on the reviews we read and also it's nice to head out to the village in the evening.

All in all, we enjoyed the Bandara so much we didn't really do much but unwind by the pool overlooking the beach and making full use of the resort and room (and the A/C which was most important!). We didn't use the spa facilities or gym equipment but it all looked very good!

The only critism (which has already been mentioned in other reviews) is the reception staff speak very little English but they remain very courteous and as helpful as possible. Also we were slightly concerned about construction taking place at the neighbouring hotel but can reassure that you only heard this when by the pool at the beachfront.

All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Although we did get a great deal through an agency but would've been prepared to pay more and stay in the same resort.

My best girlfriend and I stayed here for 6 nights in late April. We'd just spent a few crazy days in Phuket so were looking for a nice place to relax, get a tan, eat, drink, sleep, read books etc and it was perfect for that.

The rooms were large - we had a room with two queen beds - and ours was only a few steps from the pool. It was about a 200m walk to the sun lounges spread out along the beach.

The day spa was lovely and much more reasonably priced than the other day spas in the area, where you'd pay similar prices to back in Australia.

The staff are very friendly but don't understand English too well, so if you need help booking tours or asking for directions, go up to the main desk and someone should be able to help.

Buffet breakfast was included in our booking. There was lots of food, but it was the same each day. It would've been nice to have some variety, but no big deal. We found it was best to eat a big breakfast, then have a late lunch and not worry about dinner - you'll be too tired from all that sunbaking, swimming and reading :)

Bophut beach looks towards Koh Phangan, on the northern end of Koh Samui. It's a flat beach and gets deep quickly, but roped off so it's private. The sand is very coarse, not soft and white like Chaweng or Lamai beaches, but they were much busier and very tourist-focussed.

The best way to see the local area is to go for a walk along the beach, up towards Fisherman's Village for dinner or lunch at one of the cheap restaurants along the beach.

To explore the island, hire a Jeep. It costs 700BHT for the day and about 500BHT in fuel to get around the island. We stopped at Chaweng for lunch and at a few other spots to go for a swim etc and all up we took about 5 hours.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2010

We spent 10 nights in the Bandara Resort & Spa during April 2010.

First the good points:

1. The Bandara has the best swimming pool I have ever seen in a hotel complex. It is huge, beautifully designed and has a depth (1.2-1.5m) that is ideal for any adult swimmers who are not particularly confident in the water. There are a further 2 pools plus a shallow childrens’ pool. All the surrounding grounds are immaculately kept.

2. During my stay I had 3 massages in the spa which were all fantastic. A 90 minute aromatherapy massage cost around £54 (including the 10% service charge and 7% VAT which is applied to all expenditure throughout the hotel). This was much more expensive than the beach-side massages widely available in Fisherman’s Village (where a Thai massage costs as little as £4) but the quality of the massage was worth every penny in my opinion.

Now the not so good points:

1. We booked a “deluxe” room which is supposed to be more spacious than the standard Bandara rooms. While our balcony was huge, the room itself was not spacious at all. The fixtures and fittings were very cheap-looking with chipped woodwork, minor stains/marks on the cushions, curtains and balcony day-bed and a tiny amount of storage space. Hanging space was very limited and there were only 2 drawers in the room which meant we were unable to unpack all our clothes (and we travel relatively lightly).

2. Other reviewers have mentioned the fact that the hotel supplies beach bags and flip flops in all the rooms. What they don’t mention is that the flip flops supplied are not new for every guest – the ones in our room had been well worn by previous guests, as had the spa-style slippers provided to go with the bathrobes.

3. The only air-conditioned areas in the hotel were the bedrooms and spa. The reception, restaurants and bars were roofed-over with open sides designed to allow a breeze to blow through. In mid-April this resulted in all these areas being uncomfortably hot.

4. Even though the hotel was far from full during our stay, the service level throughput the hotel (with the exception of the spa) was very poor for Thailand and there was no obvious sign of any management around the hotel.

5. On our last morning (just before we were due to check-out), a member of staff knocked on the door and asked to check the minibar contents. Not only did he check the minibar, he also looked in the wardrobe to check that we had not taken any of the coat hangers, golf umbrellas or the aforementioned grotty flip flops and spa slippers. He even checked that the bed runner and canvas laundry bag were not missing! We have been lucky enough to have stayed in a lot of hotels over the years (many of them much nicer than the Bandara) but we have never been treated like potential thieves before now.

I have given the Bandara 2 star solely because of its pool and spa, but overall there are much better places to stay in Koh Samui than this.

Bandara was a real find for us, travelling with friends and their one year old son. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. The 'Deluxe' rooms are actually SMALLER than the 'Superior' ones despite being quite a lot more expensive, they just have more direct 'pool views' and aren't worth the extra. The two pools meant the place never seemed too busy and the service was typically Thai - very attentive. The two hotel restaurants are nothing to speak of, and the Bophut 'Fisherman's Village, just a 5 minute walk down the beach means there's no value to 'staying in' or worse still, going all Inclusive. The 'Village' is a strip of great restaurants, for a range of budgets, interspersed with shops etc and we ate there almost every night. The spa at Bandara is reasonably priced (about £35 for a 1hr massage) and beautifully done. Be sure to eat at next door 'Anantara Hotel' which has a wonderful (although pricey) restaurant. We booked through the 'Check Rates' link on tripadvisor, that took us to 'Agoda' where we got a Superior room, including breakfast (which was great) for £89 a night - much better than the rates on the hotel's website

This is a fantastic hotel for people who are looking at staying somewhere out of the hussle and bussle of Koh Samui. We stayed in a suite overlooking the main pool which was spacious, clean, airconditioned and very comfortable. The price was reasonable but a little on the expensive side for Thailand. I had treatments art the spa which was one of the best treatment I've ever had. However, my partner got some sort of food poisoning while we were there and he hadn't eaten anywhere but the resort which was unfortunate. The staff were very helpful and friendly!

We stayed in a villa with its own small splash pol and outdoor shower/bath. It was sensational
and the grounds of the resort were beautiful.
However, don't eat there - the food is overpriced and very ordinary. For instance, how good does a beach BBQ sound? How disappointing it was - no steaks no chops no sausages, long ques to get a plate of food - never again
