Good vibes, good food, good staff... Very clean and lovely place.
We stayed here in december 2013. We would recommend it because we really enjoyed our stay. Quality and great price! seems to reside in a forest well taken care of! the peace of mind!

My boyfriend and I have been travelling around Thailand for about a month now, so we have stayed at a fair share of guest houses and hotels along our way. I booked 'Free House' after reading some great tripadvisor reviews and was keen to stay on Bophut beach. Prior to our stay at 'Free House' we had been staying at a hotel called 'Sundays Sanctuary Resort and Spa' also in Bophut - it's rooms were about the same price as 'Free House'. We arrived at 'Free House' and it was obvious that this would have once been a bustling hotspot on the beach, but I believe it has lost it's magic. We were asked to pay upon check in, however their credit card machine wouldn't process my card so I was forced to pay with cash (which was a bit annoying). We had been put in probably the worst room, it was the farthest away from the beach...but we were still excited to be near the beach! On the wall of your bungalow there is a list of rules and regulations including: no eating or drinking in the room, you may not take the hotels towels onto the beach you must buy your own and you cannot put toilet paper in the toilet - these were just a few of the many rules that were slightly irritating. But the room was sufficient with everything you would need - if you ask for a double bed be aware that it is only two single beds pushed together and is not very long (my boyfriend is quite tall and was longer than the bed). We went down to the restaurant for some lunch, firstly the customer service in general is terrible, in particular at the restaurant. The food is average and VERY overpriced, the restaurant next door is far cheaper and looks a lot nicer. We then headed down to the beach, to hopefully have a refreshing swim. However, unlike all the other hotels along Bophut beach, 'Free House' does not have sun beds or towels for its guests along the beach. Actually it's restaurants table and chairs take up the majority of its room on the beach - so we decided to go find another spot. We spent the afternoon at another part of Bophut beach nearby and decided to go elsewhere for dinner. It was what happened when we were about to sleep that really turned us off 'Free House'. Whilst laying in bed we began to feel as if we were being bitten by something...sure enough when we turned on the lights we had tiny bite marks all over our legs and arms. We were certain it was nothing like a mosquito, and knew it had to be some sort of bed bug or mite that was living in the mattress. I had read about bed bugs before coming to Thailand, and knew that the small brown splotches on the mattress were evidence of bedbugs. For us this was unacceptable - considering the price. We went to find the owner, after knocking a ridiculous number of times an extremely drunk man came to answer. We told him about the bugs in the bed and he said that it was impossible. He told us that they air the mattresses outside in-between guests and that it was too clean for bedbugs. He also kept trying to tell is that we had been bitten by mosquitos outside, but we knew these were not mosquito bites! I told him that I was very unhappy with having to be eaten alive all night by bed bugs and he simply said there was nothing he could do, he couldn't even offer us a sheet (there is only a under sheet on the bed and not one to cover yourself with). I don't know whether it was the fact that he was blind drunk or that he just wanted us to leave him alone, but he was very unhelpful. By this point it was about 10:30, and with nothing else to do, we went back to our room, lay out sarongs on the bed to try and avoid being bitten. But this did not stop them - we hardly got any sleep and woke up with bites all over us. Tired and very annoyed we knew we did not want to spend another night being bitten and uncomfortable and decided that we would attempt to get our money back so we could find a hotel elsewhere. We spoke to the lady who own's 'Free House' (who by the way is very rude) and told her that there were bed bugs or something in the mattress biting us - like the man she said it was impossible. We showed her our bites, and she kept just walking away from us, it was obvious she didn't want to try and solve the problem in anyway. We told her we didn't want to spend another night being bitten and asked if we could get our money back for the next three nights. She refused, saying it wasn't her fault, and if she didn't give us our money back she would lose money - we argued with her and told her it wasn't our fault either! But she wasn't having any of it, and by the end we were left with nothing else to say and were forced to just walk away having lost about $90 AUD. We then returned to the previous hotel we had stayed at 'Sundays Sanctuary' also in Bophut, however not on the beach. For the same price, the rooms are enormous and very clean, it also has a wonderful pool and is very serene. Compared to this, 'Free House' is very overpriced and does not offer the same quality - you may think 'Free House' is cheap, but for what you get it is definitely not. Our experience with 'Free House' was terrible and we were so glad to getaway from those bedbugs and rude owners! My advice is don't stay here, there are better places in Bophut!

Booked in here for 2 nights at the start of a tour of the islands. The approach road was unpromising but the taxi turned down a little lane and we found ourselves in a mini tropical haven. Lush greenery, plenty of birdsong, and a characterful restaurant/bar opening onto the beach. The bungalow was small with a mosquito net and washing facilities- perfectly fine for the price. Food was good, and the service polite, though not as friendly as we found in other places. A walk along the beach confirmed that we had a bargain- other much posher places existed next door, with prices to match. The only downside of this was (as I am becoming a Grumpy Old Woman) it was mainly inhabited by people on a tight budget, so young backpackers. Perfectly nice and well-behaved but did feel like we had gatecrashed a club 18-30!

Room Tip: Quieter sleep away from the bar.

We recently stayed at Free House over the Christmas and New Year period. The bungalows smelt of mould, were dark and extremely basic. If you like mosquito bites, poor service and a long travel to Chaweng Beach, stay here. Otherwise, you're much better off staying elsewhere.

I have been here several time and love it so much. It's at a great price with clean and simple rooms. Only seconds to the beach with a fantastic bar and restaurant. Odd who runs the bar is great and kept us entertained. The owners are lovely and would do anything for us.

Would love to come and see you all again.

We all have children now and keep us busy but hopefully come see you all again.

Possibly the rudest staff we have yet encountered. We always pay at check out, this is the norm to us. The guy at the bar said ok. After coming back from a day out, 'Tip' demanded us to pay now, no please or thank you..just damn right rude. Wouldn't have been an issue if she would had asked nicely.
After going to the lounge to get some wifi, more staff members just grunting 'menu' 'drinks' again no please or thank yous.
We needed to check out at 6:30 in order to get out boat, and asked Tip if someone would be at reception at this time for check out. She just nodded her head and couldn't look less interested if she tried.
Wifi is also turned off around 9:30pm which is annoying.
Bungalows are nothing special, small and basic, however the bathroom was covered in lizard poo and full of Mosquitos. We got eaten alive staying there! Mosquito net isn't very effective.
Beach outside is dirty and they don't take good care of it.
Would not recommend..much better places to stay on the island.

The Free House is perfect if you are looking for a cheap and cheerful stay on the beach side. The beach bar sits on the beach and the rooms are what you would expect from a £10 per night bungalow. Small rooms but a double bed with mosquito net and small but functional bathroom. It is clean and other then a few cute little lizards there was no wildlife in the rooms. I really loved my experience at the Free House, the only thing I can comment on that is not so positive is the loud middle aged men that frequented the bar and spent all day and night with a beer in one hand and sports on the TV. After coming back late one night, my boyfriend decided to stay on the beach and I headed back to the room- they assumed we had had an argument and made comments like "it doesn't always work out/ shame, what happened?!/ coming home alone hey?" Which made me feel uncomfortable however this is not the fault of the free house, just bad luck we were staying at the same time!
