“Melati will always be remembered by my wife and I as the ideal place for our honeymoon.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2011

The service we experienced here was wonderful and very friendly. We really liked how they would send someone in a buggy for our commute to the beach and other areas in the resort. We also liked how Melati staff would clean our rooms at least twice a day. For example, every time we came back from dinner, our rooms would have been cleaned while we were away. Many times, a staff would chat with us about our needs during meals. Furthermore, using English is definitely okay at Melati and shopping areas in Chaweng.

We booked a Pool Villa for our honeymoon and we were impressed with how large it was and its cleanliness. Being in this part of the world we did get (and expect) mosquito bites and sometimes little creatures could crawl into the room (as the room is surrounded by a grassy areas), but it didn't happen frequently. The room also had a decent DVD home theatre system with which we enjoyed several movies in the comfortable living room.

I like the location for its exclusiveness as it is quite far away from other resorts. The ride to Chaweng (shopping area) is acceptable and not too far. Many of our meals were taken at the resort, and for the quality of food and atmosphere, I thought the prices were very reasonable. We also enjoyed a spa there and that was absolutely wonderful.

Overall, apart from the mosquito bites, rare appearance of crawlers in the room, and the fact that we had to ask for toothbrushes , there’s nothing bad to say about Melati. We would love to come back and recommend this resort to all our friends.

We booked the Melati for our Christmas/New Year vacation - 24 Dec to 4 Jan - on the basis of reviews here, and the website photos of the villas.

Rooms/Villas: We were not let down. The Pool Villa Suite gave us plenty of room to spread out, the separate living area was pleasant, there were TVs (if you need them) in both the bedroom and living room and separate air-conditioning units and fans in each. There was a good-sized dressing area, and the entire suite was airy and light, impeccably clean. The bathroom was large, with a good-sized shower, a bath that was perfect to soak in after a massage, and plenty of room to put toiletries, bathing suits etc. The pool was maintained regularly and was very clean, and a good size for two people to enjoy using it, although obviously not big enough to really swim in. We enjoyed returning to our little oasis.

The housekeeping let us down a little, as mentioned elsewhere service is not consistent. In particular there were times after our room was serviced that we still had to call for towels, and frequently we never got a full set even after calling(ie bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths). Soap wasn't always replaced, and so we ran out, and the bathrobes were not washed or changed once in our 9 days, which we think was unacceptable. The towels we received on our last day were thin and ripped. The quality of the amenities – soap, shampoo etc – was pretty dubious too. This really doesn't live up to the resorts supposed 5-star rating.

It would also have been useful if there had been swimming towels for the pool in the villa. Our villa was close to the beach pool, so we used towels from there, but it was a bit inconvenient.

The resort: It is very pleasantly laid out around gardens and water features, and feels lush and green. To the west you can see some construction on the hill beside the resort, but to the right there are only views of palm trees, athough once you're down at the beach you do see the neighbouring properties. The beach is small but that didn't bother us as we're not really beach swimmers unless there are some big waves. The beach pool is large, and was good for swimming laps late or early in the day. The beach bar and restaurant nearby give a good service. There is another pool further inland from the beach, in a quiet garden. Personally I preferred this pool for its solitude and beauty, but perhaps because of the solitude it is not serviced by staff, ie we had to take our own towels, no bar, and then on the last days the lounge chairs had all been moved to the front pool which was much more crowded.

The free wi-fi is great, although I couldn't access it from my iPad, due to (I think) the set-up of their website. (I forgot to raise it with them because we also had a laptop and so could access wifi on it without problem).

Restaurants and bar: Happy hour at the pool is a must – the prices are excellent (cheaper than bars outside the resort) and there is a good selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Staff are very friendly and efficient.

Kan Sak Thong is the Thai restaurant, and also where breakfast is served. The breakfast buffet is excellent. There is a large range of options, with fruit, fruit juices (squeezed to order), cheeses, eggs made to order any way (and very well too), bacon, beans, and then a variety of cooked meats that vary day to day, a selection of Thai or Chinese dishes, pancakes/waffles and French toast (all three every day), a range of pastries, a good selection of breads to toast, and a wide range of spreads. I can't see how anyone could complain about this offering.

Dinner at the Thai restaurant is a real pleasure. Unfortunately it is quiet with only 5-6 tables full. The food is very good, and the prices weren't bad – when we visited restaurants elsewhere we were surprised to see many of them had similar prices, with far lower quality surroundings, service and ambience. I highly recommend it. We're former Thai residents, and thoroughly enjoyed the food. Try the tamarind duck.

View Pha Ngan at the beach serves a variety of Mediterranean or Thai food. It's great for lunch – though struggles sometimes when there is a rush on around 2 pm. The food was good and reasonably priced for a resort.

The Spa: We both had a couple of spa treatments. Prices are steep (higher than NZ prices) but along the same lines as other 5 star hotel spas, and the quality was okay. They ran a spa happy hour at the pool in the afternoons, when we got foot massages for about a third of the normal price.

Christmas/New Year at Melati:
As with all (so it seems) Thai hotels, they make an effort to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their guests. We arrived on Christmas Day, and there was a tiny Christmas tree in our room. This was nice, and tasteful. But the rest of the decorations were just plain tacky, and really spoiled the beauty of the surroundings at times. At the entrance to the pool there were Christmas trees and a painted snowman archway, and the view from the breakfast/Thai restaurant was spoiled by a reindeer and sleigh monstrosity over a lovely fishpond. In my view, this just made the hotel look cheap.

The New Year’s Eve party was fine, but we didn’t stay long (not least because there was a rainstorm). They went to a huge effort to put on this party, and the preparations did disrupt guests’ ability to enjoy the resort pools in particularin the day before. I know they all feel they have to do it, but personally I would far rather search out my own New Year’s Eve party than be forced to attend something simply because we have had to pay double accommodation price for that night. It has reminded me NOT to travel to Thailand again at Christmas/New Year if I can avoid it.

Location: The location, in a small bay with few neighbours, was a bonus for us. We had no desire to be in Chaweng, but it's only 15 minutes or so away. We rented a car for 5 days, and used it to explore the island, visit Fisherman's Village (we thought the restaurants looked pricy), Bophut (an area we preferred), and Chaweng (crowded, tourist trap, full of DVD, clothing/souvenir stores, fast food/chain restaurants and bars), and further afield. I'd recommend hiring a car at least for a day or two – the island is easy to navigate, and some of the highlights for us were finding local restaurants right on the beach for lunch in quieter parts of the island. Sadly, not that much is quiet in Samui anymore.

If you're wanting nightlife and partying, I wouldn't stay at Melati. If you want quiet, nice surroundings, and good service, you'll have an altogether pleasant and enjoyable experience, and would find the Melati a good choice in Samui. I wouldn't rank it at the top of five star resorts, by any means. It lets itself down in a few ways but then it doesn't charge like the very top five star resorts either.

Melati was our last hotel we stayed in and quite different to our previous resort which was in phuket (Evason Six Sense). We really enjoyed ourselves, we had no problems at all. The staff were amazing in particular couple of the pool waiters,(forgot their names) they are so friendly and so helpful, we found that with all the staff. The food was amazing and we knew before we booked our hotels that food was alwasy going to be more expensive then street food ect. We liked that we were away from the main center and we hired scooters and it was easy to get into town with a map. Loved every minute of it and will be back soon! :)

Fantastic resort, situated just far enough away from the bustling towns of Chewang and Fishermans Village but close enough to get to them in 15minutes.

I have never seen such great service and staff a true to asset to Melati as we are on our honeymoon they really spoiled us and we are so greatful. I would recommend this resort for any honeymoon couple or any couple for that matter, children are welcome but are kept under tight control and so were never a problem.

Thank you again for everything we will see soon for an anniversary visit!

I had read other reviews before we left and thought I'd provide abalanced view of resort. It is located away from the main part of town but that is what a resort is about. It had a good beach for which my kids liked kayaking on and swimming in, the pool was great. happy hour was good.
The fitness centre was good as well. The activities that were listed was a bit of drawback as most of the guests were not interested in participating but the staff did their best to accommodate the needs of my sons.
The food was good but too much - only so many buffets you can have. Breakfast buffet was best and enough to get you through to dinner. The choice of restaurant was limited - only 2 but the seafood niight was great.
The trip to the main town was good and cheap. the shopping was good.

We did the elephant trk and that was worth the trip.

Staff were great and we particularly liked it that the duty manager, ivan, went out of his way every morning to see how things were going and if they could do anything. We found staff very friendly.

The rooms with out a doubt are the best - we stayed in the deluxe rooms and they were roomy and very classy. I would imagine the other rooms that had pools and spas were even better.

The only issue with the beach is the pollution that washed into the area and th staff did clean it but pollution is an issue on the island.

We stayed at Melati for 6 nights and had an amazing time there. We received excellent service from the moment we arrived up until we left, particulatly from a man name Ivan. He followed through on every enquiry we had and regulary checked in with us to see if there was anything else we needed. Our room was quite spacious given there were three of us in there. The view of the main pool which looked over the beach was stunning. The service at the pool bar was a little slow, but otherwise ok. The grounds are well kept, with beautiful scenery.
One down side is that the hotel is quite far from the main strip of Chaweng and the cost of catching a taxi there is quite expensive. We tried to rely on the hotel shuttle bus to get there as it was much cheaper.
Overall, i would highly recommend staying here if you're looking for something quieter and relaxing, away from the hustle and bustle of Koh Samui. I'd definitely go back.

We stayed at the Melati as the final destination of our honeymoon. The hotel was quiet due to low season which suited us perfectly. Plenty of room at the beach (which was small but adequate) & pool (which was lovely). We stayed in a Junior Pool Villa which was spacious indoors and plenty of room outdoors. The room had all the facilities we needed (no bath though, only came with Pool Villa or deluxe room however this was no issue!) and was very comfortable and clean but probably due a little spruce up in places (bathroom mainly). The grounds of the hotel were pretty and the villa's blended in perfectly. The staff were very friendly however weren't very attentive at breakfast but at dinner were fine. Service wasn't consistent; sometimes they came to turn down the bed sometimes they didn't, sometimes we had ice in the afternoon sometimes we didn't! This was no great issue though, if we called for something they brought it! We had a complementary spa for our honeymoon which was absolutely fantastic, this is definately not to be missed! The location of the hotel was a bit out of the way & the hotel taxi cost a bomb but we rented a scooter to nip back & forth to Chaweng (we had a little accident & spent 5 days back & forth hospital, nothing major but you always think it won't happen to you!!! Wear a helmet!!!!!) The only downside was that the hotel restaurant was very expensive and were often empty, I can only assume for this reason as the food was fantastic. Overall a very good hotel, would recommend.
