“A perfect retreat to relax”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

The Fernery Lodge was the first stop for my wife and I on our journed from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. We had just had a busy few days (a wedding to attend and then a few days Safari) so the intention was to use the Fernery as a place to relax for 2 days before continuing on our journey. We found the lodge therefore the perfect place to do this.

We stayed in the Alikreukal Chalet which was nicely furnished, clean and warm. We used the wood burner to warm the place up as the day we were there it rained a lot so it was nice to have the fire going. There are some seats in the room so were relaxed in the chalet. They also do a nice service of delivering a meal to the chalet which we made use of on the second evening.

The food we had was wonderful. The meals were well presented and the service was really good too. The eating area is quite small so I can see why you need to book early.

The road into the area is quite long and especially in a hire car we did feel a bit nervous to avoid any large holes. The road feels worse than it is though but we were happy to not leave the area on the second day and just took a walk locally and then relaxed at the lodge. It's a forestry area so the road isn't the responsibility of the lodge so it is just something to be aware of before you arrive.

There is no wi-fi in the rooms which is a little bit frustrating but also quite nice as you will put down your gadgets and relax.

Dear AlexMacdd

I am happy to see you enjoyed Alikreukal Chalet, its also one of my favourite. Yes the road is a bit bumpy but once here Heaven awaits you. With regards to WIFI there is a WIFI area at reception we are in the process of boosting the celular range so service will be available at the pool area soon. I am so happy you had a relaxing stay hope to see you soon.
Gracious Regards

The Fernery Lodge and Chalets provides a great break away. It's the perfect romantic spot for a couple, but equally suited to larger groups or families.

The property is beautiful, with great views of the surrounding forest and ocean. The staff were a pleasure and super helpful and friendly.

The chalet was nice but little touches would have made a big difference to our overall memory of the place. After a long drive we were shown our chalet and realised that there was no complementary coffee or tea, even though there was a kettle. It was only after the second day that we realised it had obviously not been re-stocked from the previous occupants and should have been there. We also got a phone call half an hour before the restaurant was open for dinner to say it was already fully booked so we had to have a meal in our room, which in itself was fine but there is an extremely limited menu available for this - nothing really for young children. We also didn't have a view out of our chalet as all the foliage had grown so high. However when we went for a walk about, we noticed that most of the chalets nearby had stunning views. When booking, you also need to be aware that it is about a 6km, 20 minute steady drive down an unmade bumpy road to get to the site, so although it's possible to get to the place in a normal car, a 4x4 would be advisable. Saying all this, the chalet inside was lovely and there is a wood burning stove for chillier evenings. I think a young couple or group of friends who want isolation and to go for walks in the surrounding area would be most suited to coming here.

Dear NicolineR

Yes a Glass of wine with a good book by the fireplace is relaxing and cosy. On your next visit why not try the Jacuzzi, and a warm glass of Gluvine overlooking the waterfall, very romantic and a definite recommendation from management .
