“Lovely food, friendly service, delightful setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2013

This restaurant was recommended to us by Le Moulin Neuf at Paunat, which was the excellent b and b where we stayed, which is a ten-minute walk away. The restaurant is in a delightful setting next to the old Abbey. It has very friendly and helpful staff - I speak reasonable French and was able to understand almost all the menu but the staff were happy to explain it in either French or English. As we were there in August, we ate outside and the atmosphere was very relaxed - yet the service was excellent. Many people eating there were families with children and a big advantage of this setting was that there was plenty of space for the children to play without annoying other diners! We ate their twice during our week in Paunat. The first time we had the excellent set menu at 22 euros and the second time from the a la carte menu. The food was delicious without being pretentious. I look forward to a return trip to the Dordogne and will certainly visit this restaurant again. It is full every night in the summer and they were turning people away both the times we visited - - so you'd need to book in advance.

“Location, service and friendship”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2013

We have eaten at this restaurant before and over this summer we have eaten at most of the Dordognes best restaurants. Having dined at some of the worlds best I thought we would try to give an objective review of each. we have tried to cut through some of the widely and often unfairly different scores.

So chez julien - this restaurant is in a beautiful Location and whether you go in Sumer or winter you are assured of very good service, a fairly priced menu (15 and 22 euro plus a la carte) but most of all a memorable experience if you go with friends and family or alone. Actually it is best enjoyed in a group where you can share a wonderful time.

So to the food - Michelin star it is not. The starters are excellent, the mains good and tasty and the deserts ok. Against similarly priced local restaurants this us good quality and has variety - sure the menu does not change every day but having been over 10 times in a year there is more than enough to chose from.

Go ahead and book and enjoy an excellent time - one of my top 5 inthe region and fir a family gathering number 1.

“Fantastic lunch experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2013

We visited Chez Julien for lunch with our 3 kids, aged 5 and below, and had a fantastic meal. The food was excellent, the setting is beautiful and the service spot on. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, but make sure you reserve a table. We paid €22 each for a lovely 3 course menu and the boys shared a main for €13, which they kindly split between 3 plates and cut the meat. We will certainly be back next time we're nearby.

“Great food, gorgeous location”

This is one of many restaurants we have eaten at in the outlying area around Bergerac. For anyone looking for places to eat around the Bergerac area, four friends who live locally have set up a website reviewing restaurants in and around the Bergerac area. We update and add a restaurant every week. This is not a commercial venture, but we do take our food seriously, and love the Dordogne. Check it out if you're planning a trip to the Dordogne, and any feedback would be very welcome!

“Canteen food in a beautiful setting!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2013

We used to be regulars at this beautiful location and saw Julien's reputation develop over the years. It was never a gourmet joint but a place to enjoy home cooked style local food.We stopped going as we were bored with the seldom renewed menu. Skip a couple of years and we hear that all is good once more, so we renew our acquaintance with the place to share a meal with cousins who have a house nearby. The service was totally slow but no worries there we had time...We finally ordered and guess what, the menu was not many miles apart from the usual...foie gras, stuffed Cornish hen and YES something exciting: grilled lamb on the plancha...So with great expectactions we waited and waited and finally got food place in front of us. The appetizers were OK although the slices of foie gras had sat outside the fridge and were going grey...so far so average...The entrees turned up with identical garnishes of defrosted vegetables... half a dozen slices of carrots and waterlogged soggy salsify. We had been asked if we wanted French fries for the table and got the nastiest cheap commercial fries - gourmet fries anyone? - the plancha lamb three of us ordered was really 3 basic quality small lamb chops - pan fried and tasteless. The stuffed Cornish hen looked terrible and apparently tasted the same and so did the sweetbread, dry and brown sluggish lump. Only great note, lovely wines! We see a wine bar in Julien's future but as a noted local restaurant, the place is a total sham...sorry but nothing to report on desserts or coffee as we were - all six of us - completely off our food by then...If you have never been to Paunat, visit the abbey - totally atmospheric and eat anywhere but there...There are enough places in the Perigord where the food is more than adequate - a great wine bar in Le Bugue nearby -Chai Monique - a brilliant restaurant in Sarlat - Le Grand Bleu and many more.... tourists beware...
