“waht a find......”
Reviewed 20 January 2014 for a stay in December 2013

we stayed with bea and Derek for a few days at the end of our marathon French adventure. maison pyron is beautifully decorated and furnished with exquisite taste.
as we stayed in early December, the most fantastic wood burning stove was ablaze and we enjoyed cosy nights in dining with our hosts and their friends. if it is this good in mid winter, it must be amazing in spring and summer.

“Unique, characterful property which provided a great base for visiting the local area and beyond.”
Reviewed 15 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Where to begin...well there were 5 of us travelling - myself, my husband, my 10 year old son and my mother and father in law. Although I'm not a seasoned traveller of France, my parents in law were quite confident that this would be a good location to visit various places, so we went ahead and booked. Bea (the owner) was brilliant from the outset - excellent at getting back in touch and answering any questions. The house itself looked great online - we booked through holiday lettings which was easy peasy - and our only concerns centred around the pool; because it was raised and perhaps not big enough, and because it was shared with the owners but we needn't have worried, they were so discreet we barely saw them. When we arrived Bea and Derek (owners) welcomed us warmly and showed us round the house and the grounds.

The House
The house is absolutely charming and was sparkling clean. The owners have only owned the property for just over a year and have clearly worked really hard to carefully restore elements of the house to their former glory. Some of the tiled floors are just stunning. And the wooden floors have also been restored and are really beautiful. Derek is a professional furniture restorer and so some of the pieces of furniture and just delightful. Some ornaments/lamps etc are of course just personal taste (not necessarily mine!) but the eclectic nature of the way they have pulled things together makes it all somehow work! And it's cool - as long as you keep the windows and shutters closed! The only slight negative there might be for larger groups is that the kitchen is not huge. We comfortably sat 5 of us round the kitchen table (when we were unable to sit outside on the terrace) but more than 6 would have been difficult. There is the dining table of course in another part of the house but to be honest I'd have been scared to scratch the French polish!
LIKES: Floors, decor. We really liked the shower in the main bedroom.
COULD BE BETTER: Having a wardrobe in 2nd bedroom. Oven in kitchen is temperamental but this is noted in the house details.

The Grounds
The exterior is really quite big. There is a terrace directly outside the kitchen accessed via french doors. We ate all our meals there (bar the ones prevented by the hailstorm and the thunderstorms!). This has access through to the rear of the property where the pool and recreational area is located. The barn next to the pool has a table and chairs and provides valuable shade and houses various pool floats and balls, and body boards for the beach. It also has a dart board - which we used quite a lot on the day we desperately needed shade having been burnt badly the previous day! The pool itself was actually ok. We played in it a lot, and were in and out of it whenever we were outside by the pool BUT it's not suitable for swimming. I think a proper sunken pool would be better...
LIKES: General layout, barn.
COULD BE BETTER: Pool

Location
For those who are used to visiting France I suspect this location wouldn't phase them. It's definitely not tourist central by any means, and a car is a must. But if you're willing to research the area a little there are plenty of things to do and places to visit. We travelled as far south to the coastal town of St Jean de Luz, and west to Port D'Albret - fantastic beach. Both definitely worth a visit. We all loved Dax - maybe just because things were open!! PLEASE NOTE: We completely failed to get into the hang of getting up and out early because everything closes at 12, and re-opens again at between 2-4 unless you are in a very touristy areas.

Overall, a very good and memorable experience. In fact my 10 year old made me laugh - as we arrived home he looked really pensive so I asked him what he was thinking and he said 'I'm just wondering who's sleeping in my bed right now'. He meant at Maison Pyron! He was NOT happy!

Management Response

As the first guests to stay at Maison Pyron, we were pleased to read your impressions from your time here. We decided to install an in-ground 10 x 5m pool, which was loved by everyone staying here last year. There is terracing around the pool and the large barn now has a table tennis table providing hours of fun. Thank-you for your suggestions too - we installed a new oven in the kitchen last year and bedroom 2 has a matching antique wardrobe and double bed.
