The welcome and the help given to us in planning our stay was outstanding. The reception staff were multi-lingual (good French and English and maybe more), and went to great lengths to give good advice and to support to us. However, bright street lights on the promenade with flimsy curtains meant that the quality of sleep was very poor. Room was small for the double and single beds within, and the cupboard space inadequate. Excellent cooked breakfast.

Room Tip: If you want a dark room, avoid rooms overlooking the sea

We stayed for two nights at the Costa Linda and were well suited. It's exactly what it purports to be - clean, in a good location, and with friendly staff.
The bedrooms (we had one with a balcony overlooking the sea) are small but they have all you might need, and downstairs there's a restaurant and bar serving breakfast and an evening meal - if required.
The picnic supplied for our walk from Portela to Santo da Serra was excellent

We stayed for two nights at the Costa Linda and were delighted. It's nothing posh, but it's clean, in a very good location, and above all has excellent staff. They are friendly and attentive, and all seemed to speak good English. The bedrooms (we had one with a balcony overlooking the sea) are small but they have all you need. There's a restaurant and bar on the seafront serving straightforward and good value food.

The restaurant was rather quiet in the evenings (we were there in March) so for one evening we ate at a nearby place called A Pipa. It described itself as a snack-bar but don't be put off by that. Excellent little restaurant full of locals, and again very good value.

Porto da Cruz is a nice little town. There are good walks but they do involve quite a climb to begin with. If you are a walker and are tempted by a path east to the Boca da Risco be warned: It does get very scary and unless you have a real head for heights you will need to turn back.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in February 2014. It was cold outside, but the hotel and its rooms were comfortably warm: important! The rooms are spacious enough and the beds are good. Friendly staff, speaking good English. Helpful: they warned us that a Levada we would like to walk was closed and they proposed a walk in the Laurel Forest above Portela. That walk was great and very different from any other walk we did. The foggy weather enhanced the original-jungle atmosphere and the ferns and trees were lovely. The hotel's Restaurant is OK, a little on the dear side. Watch out walking near the communal swimming pool on the beach: very slippery!

Room Tip: Try for a seaside room!

The restaurant attached to the hotel is called Praca da Engenho and was the scene of our delightful lunch which we enjoyed while sitting outside listening to the waves roll onto the rocky shore. Vanda and her assistant were friendly, spoke excellent English and provided excellent service. Four of our group had scabbard fish which was thick, fresh and perfectly done. Although they were sceptical about the banana topping, it actually enhanced the fish. I had the calamari which were amongst the most tender I have ever had and were sauteed (not deep fried) in a delicious bacon and olive oil sauce. The house wine by the bottle was inexpensive and delicious. Indoor washrooms were spotless and the indoor dining area was beautiful. Although there was a bit too much rice and potato on the plates, all agreed that this was one of the best meals that we have enjoyed on the island.

We haven't stayed in the hotel, but we have eaten in 2011 and again 2013 in the open air restaurant, that is within about 30 feet of the sea, with great views.

I had sardines, my wife beef, in 2011, and lamb, plus chips, olives & Bolo do Caco, the unleavened bread,. with garlic and butter in 2013, plus Maracuja drinks & bottled water - all for less than 20 Eur. Marvellous location, friendly helpful staff.

Room Tip: We didn't stay in the Hotel, just ate in the outside restaurant

Lovely hotel that overlooked the beach at Porto Da Cruz, and near the public, sea-water swimming pools on the seafront. Some of the area around the hotel was not much to look at but having a balcony room meant that the views of the bay and cliffs beyond were superb and you ignored the "not so nice" bits. Parking could be challenging as the hotel had none of their own and we were not there in high season. Room was compact but we were only there 2 nights, and we flooded the en-suite every time we had a shower! Breakfast was adequate. Very good value for money.
