“Cool place, epic, dramatic surfing”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

We were planning on crushing at the Madeira Surf Camp for just one day and then go on travelling but ended up stayting there for over a week. It is a truly special out place with a beautiful view from the terrace on top and some chilled tunes being played from a gramophon down below in the living space. Rooms are clean and cosy, clean shower with warm water - no problems. Helder, who runs the place was super helpful and proved to be am excellent surfing instructor - there is no bullcrap, no silly pressures, no ego - just pure unadultrated surfing in a dramatic scenery of Maderia. He drove us all over the Island to the best spots and when we decided to stay longer (which happened twice) we got a discount. I will definitely go back there again - it is just a very cool place to be.

We wanted to crush there for one night and then keep on travelling and exploring - we ended up staying there for a week. Helder, the surf instructor that runs the place proved to be an excellent teacher - I surf everyday now. The place is chilled as hell with a gpampohon playing and a terrace overlooking Porto da Cruz and the Ocean - super cool! I will definitely go back there again some day!

Organising the trip was easy, thanks to André and, once there, I had an amazing time! I surfed in three different locations and Helder looked after us very well. All in an idilic spot in the middle of the Atlantic!

Thanks again guys! And see you soon!

Elizabeth.

We went to Surf Camp only for one night and we stayed for all week. Chill atmosphere in the hostel, fresh bread daily morning and evening cooking accompanied by music from the gramophone. On a very first day I have lost a fin I was using for bodyboarding. It was a clear message from the Ocean, that I should go for surfing. Due to the fact that every day the teacher chose the best places and conditions to learn, it was a big big pleasure. Even if it was the middle of winter! Excellent place to start surfing - after a few days I am addicted.

We really had a great time learning surf there! The accommodation is really nice and clean. Besides there is a very good atmosphere in this hostel. You will feel at home! One more detail : it is more easy to travel with a rental car around the island. The buses are ok but it takes much longer.

Flat is in the middle from Porta da Crus. Bus station 1 min. There is a nice Coffee behind the hostel and good restaurants around. Two spots close to Flat.
It is a Hostel, so please compare that with hotels. You will love it to stay on the balcony in the morning by breakfast. Breakfast was always enough there, thanks perfect planing from Helder and his team. You will also love it to stay on the roof in the eve. by BBQ. Great view. Surf trainer Helder is in one word great. He always look for your skills. You can start daily trip for wander very easy from flat. All was perfect and don't forget, it is a hostel. But the best one in my last years.

I don't often write reviews but this little surf hostel in Porta da Cruz deserves a special mention. It's excellent and I recommend the hostel and Helder's surf teaching unreservedly. It's clean, cool and great value. Waves were pumping in early June whilst we were there and it's a pretty consistent spot. Madeira is often described as the Hawaii of Europe and if you're tempted then this is a great place to stay.
