This was my second visit to DLP - 3rd to 6th December. My first was staying at the Disneyland Hotel so a good chance to balance, review and compare the 2.
We arrived before lunch and were checked-in quickly and bags could be left until our room was ready at 3pm. Now, the purpose of the trip was my daughter's 6th Birthday. She was not acknowledged by the reception staff at any point during check in, even though she was stood right beside me wearing her birthday badge. To say I was disappointed and somewhat cross was an understatement. This DID NOT make a good first impression - isn't Disney all about making kids smile?! The Disneyland hotel on our last visit coudnt have done more and were boderline OTT.
Anyway, we popped to the Disney Village for a bite to eat before we hit the parks.
The distance between hotel and parks is a mere 5mins walk. There is also a little train/tram that can take you if you choose not to walk.
Some rides weren't on in the Disneyland park, a little disappointing but still plenty to see and do.
After a few hours in the parks we headed back to get our room key. Now the bags were promptly delivered to the room after the keys were issued. Room was clean, as was bathroom. No complaints there. Yes there were a couple of paint chips on door frames/skirting boards - normal wear and tear, certainly didn't spoil things for us. Yes it needs a touch of tarting up - but then the same could be said of at least one room in our own houses surely?
We ate at the parkside diner on the first night - all you can eat buffet. It was ok. Limited choice of foods but what was there was hot and of a good standard. 2 adults and child came in at 84 euros. Not too bad.
Breakfast was great, stacks of pastries, yoghurts, fruit, cereals, juice and hot option of sausage, scrambled eggs and bacon, continental options too. No complaints, no queues (we ate no later than 8am) although the reception staff on check-in dish out time slot cards where u state a time to have breakfast.
The turn down service only happened once on our first night of a 3 night stay. Now this did annoy me. There is no reason for small touches to be missed when paying a premium. No explanation offered by reception either.
Overall, having stayed at the Disneyland Hotel previously, and having the works and exceptional customer service and child and staff interaction, this hotel lacked atmosphere and the personal touch. Interaction between staff and children was minimal - hello, Disney, you're meant to be about the kids!
While the place was clean, and meals reasonable, the lack of characters around about the hotel was extremely disappointing as was the variety of characters.
If you're visiting Disney for the first time and want your kids to have the whole experience, please please check out specials offers and pick the Disneyland Hotel - I am so glad this hotel was a choice for our second stay as had it been our first time - would've been wholeheartedly disappointed and upset for my child.
It was a good option for a second visit, reasonably priced and close to parks.
Top tips for saving money at Disney would be to pack snacks and juice cartons to take with you - cereal bars etc as the food and drink in the parks is beyond ridiculous. The Relay shops in the train station (just outside disney village) sells very cheap bottles of water and sandwiches etc. We are talking 1 euro 40cents for a 1.5ltr bottle of water as opposed to 5 in the parks for a 500ml bottle. Also avoid paying a premium for the photographer pics taken with characters, they aren't actually that good - and they will use ur own camera to take a pic for you - just ask! Shy bairns get nothing! Also, the Toy Story figures/toys are a LOT cheaper over there than back home in the uk, so if you're after those get them there.
For a good value meal in the village. Rainforest Cafe is great, and cracking value for money. The Earl of Sandwich is also a great eatery for lunch.
Don't know if I'll be making another trip to Disney in the near future but would be staying at the Disneyland Hotel if a was...
