“A warm and welcoming stay at Narcisa”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

We spent four delightful days at Narcisa over Easter 2014. Our top floor en suite room was clean and beautiful with two balconies overlooking Gozo. Each morning at breakfast, which comprised of fresh, local produce, we were met by Julie who has a wealth of knowledge and ideas about Gozo and things to do for the day. We were located just five minutes walk from the centre of Nadur and there were very good transport links to get about the island. We would thoroughly recommend a stay at Narcisa.

Narcisa offers deluxe clean and comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation with wonderful breakfasts! Nadur is an excellent centre from which to explore the magical island of Gozo on foot, by car or bus and there are plenty of places in Nadur and nearby Qala to dine out in the evenings. Julie – who runs Narcisa – has a wealth of local knowledge and can enable you to make the most of your time on the island. Ten days soaking up the sun and warmth of Gozo last autumn set us up for winter in northern England! Thank you – we will be back!

We were also amongst the first of Julie's guests at Narcisa, although we had stayed at her previous establishment so knew what a treat we were in for. Julie Wiltshire is the most welcoming of hosts. She is so warm and friendly - nothing is too much trouble for her. As soon as you meet her you are made to feel as though you are a close personal friend and she takes a genuine interest in making your holiday as good as possible. On our last day we needed to leave at 4 am to catch an early flight. Julie had made all the arrangements for our transfer but she was still up and awake to make sure it all went smoothly. Such is her concern for her guests.

The house is delightful, the breakfasts delicious and the village is very convenient for travelling around, either on foot, by bus or by hire car. There are a number of great restaurants in the vicinity. Just like the previous reviewer, Julie arranged our hire car with absolutely no fuss - it was delivered to the door the day we asked for it and taken away when we finished.

We stayed in the room at the top of the house which has TWO large private terraces - one overlooking the village at the front and the other overlooking the pool and garden at the back. From both terraces there are views across the island to the sea. The room itself is lovely. It is reached by a spiral staircase from the first floor and so is very secluded. However, it probably wouldn't suit someone with mobility problems.

We visit Malta most years but it has only been in the last couple of years that we have been making our base on the island of Gozo. We find it delightfully quiet and peaceful compared to the main island of Malta. There are great walks, great swimming and it's just a quick boat trip to the beautiful island of Comino. It still has all the historical interest, particularly in the capital, Victoria but everything is at a slower pace. Of course, while in Gozo we do visit Malta and Nadur is close enough to the ferry port to make this an easy day trip.

Having now stayed with Julie twice, we have absolutely no hesitation in warmly recommending Narcisa.

Room Tip: All rooms are delightful but the Azure Window which is the room at the top of the house has two huge...

We were the first guests of Julie Wiltshire at her new B&B. The place is delightful and she gave us a thoroughly enjoyable week.

Narcisa is the central third of a typical Gozitan modern residence tastefully built of the local stone.
The room she gave us, called 'Reqqa Point', was on the first floor at the rear. It had a shady terrace. Both room and terrace, facing North, had a wonderful view out over the swimming pool and small orchard, over smallholdings, with houses on the distant hill and finally to the blue mediterranean beyond.
I looked at one of the other rooms, the one on the top floor, called 'Azure Window'. It had a very large balcony which was very sunny and completely secluded - ideal for sun-worshippers! Like our room, it was ensuite.
Breakfast was on the terrace below ours, overlooking the pool and shady. In bad weather it could have been in the large dining room/ kitchen within. There was plenty of choice of good food; fruit and fruit juice, cereal, new bread (could be toasted), yoghurts, cheese, various teas and fresh coffee on a help yourself basis. Julie was also prepared to cook something for guests.
She also gave us an initial supply of fruit and a bottle of wine on our patio and as much bottled water as we required (Maltese water is desalinated seawater so, although safe to drink, is pretty disgusting!)
Location. Narcisa is on the North side of the large street running along the North edge of the town. Most GozItan towns are built on the tops of hills. This is why our room had a good view. Go out of the front door and you are in the melee of life! The centre of the town is within ten minutes walk, with restaurants, a large ornate church, tree-lined squares and a few essential shops. There's a baker making bread and pizzas and a minimarket (watch the sell-by date!) closer. Mass is celebrated in English on Sundays in Nadur convent.
I like to go for early morning walks; some are rather noisy, along roads with intense ribbon development, but you can get down to the farmers tracks. A good centre for that.
Transport: Getting to Narcisa and back. This was super-efficiently organised by Julie at a price we could not beat using a Maltese friend's recommendations.. We were name-placqued at the airport, taken by air conditioned taxi to the ferry, the met the other side by Julie in person (and Fen the dog) and taken to Narcisa. The same for the return journey, except that we had to buy tickets for the ferry (they only charge going to Malta.)
Outside the house, within five minutes walk there were four bus stops. Air-conditioned buses from 6am to 11pm at mainly hourly intervals to Xaghra (for the Gigantica) and Ramla Bay, half-hourly intervals to Victoria and Mgarr and other places. Paying an all-day fare was the most economical, and it was an excellent way of seeing the island.
There were certain nice places we couldn't go to by bus, could have walked but too hot. So Julie hired a car for us for three days, a ridiculously cheap fixed daily rate, no collision damage fee, no insurance questions for a 76 year old driver! Delivered to the door. We were out and never met the hirer.
We had originally booked to stay in Lellux, Qala. Julie had had to move from there and our holiday coincided with her move. As a result she had not had time to get building work done. We are sure she will have the air-conditioning installed and the basin and loose loo seat sorted out by now. Otherwise, we were amazed what she had been able to do for us. Nothing was too much trouble.
I forgot to mention the lovely, pristinely clean swimming pool with its underwater lighting - a real luxury!

Room Tip: Reqqa Point is probably the quietest. Azure window is good too.

Hi there
Thank you for your extremely informative review on Narcisa here on Gozo. I feel sure that any future visitors will find your information extremely useful
Yes, please be assured, those annoying little 'snags' have been rectified, and I thank you again for your patience during what was an extremely stressful week for me!
Also, regarding the air conditioning, one of the reasons I took on the house in Nadur was because it doesn't have A/C, which I consider to have such a hugely negative impact on the ecological balance of this small island.
As you have seen, the bedrooms at Narcisa are large and airy, with very effective ceiling fans, and I feel sure that future visitors will be comfortably cool in a house that is specifically designed to keep in the warmth in the winter, yet keeps the temperature cool in the summer months
I look forward to seeing you again in the future, the beautiful drawings you did for me have a very special part in my heart
Kind regards
Julie
