“Little Suburbia in Koh Samui”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

We stayed here for 6 days and couldn't have picked better.
the rooms are great and the beach is only 3 mins away by scooter. The pool was awesome and they even had a good selection of dvd's you can use whenever at no charge. I also recommend a scooter. you can rent them through Ban Tai for 180baht/day. makes this big island easy to get around as it is a 10-15min scoot away from things (which we liked).
Richard the manager was very helpful, spoke GREAT english. There are a few restaurants within walking distance,
Overall great place to stay.
Also, as others said no matter where you stay on Koh Samui, make sure to check out Fi Restaurant! If you like Greek food, it's delicious with all you can eat on fridays. It's a little up the street beside Tesco Lotus.

Room Tip: Book private pick up and scooter before you get there as it makes things so easy

We stayed here for 18 days and really enjoyed ourselves. the grounds and rooms are great and the beach is only 3 mins away by scooter. it's nice and quiet! The pool was awesome and they even had a good selection of dvd's you can use whenever.

I recommend a scooter for sure, which we rented through Ban Tai for 180baht/day to get around as it is a bit away from things (which we liked). Richard the manager was very helpful.

There are a few restaurants within walking distance, we regularly had pad Thai for 60baht which was delicious and convenient right down the street. Overall great place to stay if you are OK with not being in the party scene.

if you rent scooters I recommend a trip down to Silver Beach! it's beautiful <3 about a 30 min scooter ride from Ban Tai :)

Also, no matter where you stay on Koh Samui, make sure to check out Fi Restaurant! If you like Greek food, it's delicious. It's a little up the street beside Tesco Lotus.

I hardly dare write this review just in case everybody goes and it gets spoiled BUT.............We had been on Koh Samui for 6 weeks and stayed in various accommodations .We booked Ban Tai River Gardens for a week and were sure that it was going to be different to anywhere else we had stayed even though we had just stayed 2 weeks in a quiet bungalow in Lamai. It was like being transported to another land entirely! The small personally run resort is tucked away in the countryside by the beach of Ban Tai which still seems to cling to the old Thai ways where everyone is friendly and says Hi when you walk past. The manager Richard and his wife Melissa and their baby son made us feel extremely welcome and Richard was on hand for any questions or info we might have needed. We stayed in the Lotus studio cottage which was lovely, fresh and clean and airy. We had a small kitchenette with kettle, microwave and toaster and fridge . There was a DVD player also and arrange of DVDs to borrow in reception. There is bar that serves reasonably priced drinks, and of course the pool area which is lovely and had to ourselves most days! It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the pretty little beach, or less if you find the short- cut.
Walking to the main road to the 7/11 takes about the same and you will pass two shops which double as the local bars..the owner of the second one going toward the main road is a joy, she even provides the mossie coils and comes out a serves you! There are also a couple of small Thai restaurants to choose from and a couple of juice shacks too.
If you are looking for action, bars , and great choices of restaurants within walking distance then don't go to Ban Tai..but if you are looking for a truly relaxing time in a beautiful setting surrounded by friendly natives then this place is magic. We couldn't fault Ban Tai River Gardens in any way..just gorgeous.....when can we go back?

I stayed at River Gardens for 8 nights at the end of February with my girlfriend and had a wonderful time. From the moment we stepped off the ferry where our pick up service was waiting for us (which was pre arranged with Richard, the resort manager) until our last day there, everything was perfect!

We stayed in Lotus Studio and it was just the perfect size for the 2 of us. It has a large, private deck complete with table and chairs, perfect for sitting and enjoying breakfast, a cool drink in the afternoon and just reading and listening to the many birds. The large double doors led into a big room with a very comfortable bed. There was a large wardrobe for our clothing, a small desk and mirror as well as a TV with DVD player. A small breakfast bar wall divided the room from the kitchenette which was fully stocked with dishes, cutlery, a mini fridge, microwave, even a French Press for some yummy early morning coffee. There was no stove BUT if you ask Richard as we did he can supply you with a 2 element electric burner so you can cook some meals in your room too. However, with all the delicious restaurants just a 5-10 minute walk away, I'm not sure why one would stay in that often to cook. The large bathroom came complete with toilet, shower and sink. The shower head was huge and worked great, and with the glass wall dividing the shower from the sink it made it feel very luxurious. It's a typical Thai style bathroom with a drain on the floor and open concept shower, however I was able to shower while my girlfriend got ready at the sink/mirror area without her getting wet.

The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Lots of palm trees and lovely flowers and gardens. With it's location set back off the street and away from the hustle and bustle it's very tranquil and peaceful, perfect for relaxing by the beautiful pool and enjoying a cold drink!!

Some other amenities at the resort include a covered bar with plenty of chairs and tables where you can purchase beer or other drinks for very reasonable prices (much more reasonable than some of the nearby resorts). Above this is a gorgeous yoga sala where Richard's wife Melissa runs yoga classes. I highly recommend taking a class, I'm not one that participates regularly in yoga but my girlfriend wanted to do a class so I went as well. It was excellent, Melissa really tailors her classes to take in all levels of yoga students and because of the peaceful surroundings it was one of the most relaxing things we did on the island!

As mentioned the resort is located away from the main street and beach, however it's about a 10 minute walk to the beach, same distance to the local 7/11 and along the way to each of those places you pass many restaurants, small shops, grocery stores, and massage places. The road that Ban Tai is located on is not full of other resorts or hotels, most of the places are local residents homes, small farms etc so when walking down the roads you really feel like you are in REAL Koh Samui among the locals. Most of them get to know your face and give you a big hello when you pass by or go into their shops, it was really nice being a part of that rather than the touristy areas you can get at other parts of the island, all the while not being more than a 10 minute walk from the action.

All in all our time at Ban Tai River Gardens was perfect. Ideally it's tailored to couples and families but I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing midrange holiday, you wont be disappointed!

My partner and I booked 9 nights over Christmas and our stay was incredible! Richard, the manager and his wife Melissa make you feel right at home upon arrival.
We stayed in the Lotus bungalow with a big huge room with a super comfortable bed, a TV and dvd player, our own kitchenette, complete with mini fridge, toaster, kettle and dishes.
The bathroom was modern with a great shower head and the whole place was spotless. You're provided with fresh towels both for showering and for the pool (nice touch!). We also had our own little deck area with a table and chairs, perfect for morning coffee (which you can make in your French Press). In our room was a tourist map showing you the places to check out on the island, which was really helpful. Richard will arrange for a scooter if you want to hire one at very reasonable rates... it is a great way to get around the island.
You can also request a hot plate if you'd like to make your own food....although I don't know why you'd bother with all the amazing cheap restaurants nearby. Koh Samui can be an expensive place, but Ban Tai is located in a quiet area with many locals, and local business serving delicious Thai food. Just ask Richard to point you in the right direction. They are all a beautiful walk from the resort, down palm shaded roads with local homes and farms around you. The area is gorgeous, quiet and peaceful. The beach is about a 10 minute walk, as are a couple of shops with fresh fruit and other groceries, there's also a 7-11 nearby. You can walk up the road for a massage (we recommend Lucky's). Up the road you'll also find a few bars at night or you can buy drinks at Ban Tai River Gardens bar.
If you don't feel like going to the beach, stick around the resort to hang by the pool. We did that several days and it was really relaxing.
You will have to pay to get a transfer to the resort either from the ferry or the airport, but we highly recommend arranging this service with Richard ahead of time as he will send a driver who knows where to find the resort.
Would definitely go back to Ban Tai River Gardens...hopefully again soon!

From the moment you enter this ban tai villa and residence you know you are going to be very comfortable during your stay as you walk past the large private pool and look through the villa with the huge glass bi fold doors that open up and the private spa next to the master bedroom and week designed bathrooms .
Not only do you have one but up the stairs to the Side is another bedroom , and private entry with own uniquely designed bathroom as well with a large flat screen tv , DVD etc .
We even had a night in while staying there and cooked as the kitchen has the finest European appliances so went down the rd to the fresh food markets ( on our scooters ) they were also there waiting for us that we had arranged through Richard the resort manager ..
All up I would definitely recommend this place for two couples or a family or even single person want totally privacy in an area that is very quiet ( away from the crowds of chawang )
There are also places we went to on the beaches to eat great dinners and lunches as well so one does not have to cook .
Just the serenity and riding or walking to the nearby shops past water buffalo"s still grazing in paddocks makes one feel like you are living with the locals ( who are more then helpful and friendly )
We will definitely be back at this great place .
Although we stayed in Richards private residence the other part of the ban tai river gardens resort has nice villas and share a pool and is close to shops , the beach etc at a cheaper option .
We also had arranged through the resort for a pick up which was waiting there at the airport with our name , and also got the return service to drop us back.
Thank you for a great 6 days ban tai river gardens resort !

Room Tip: Book private pick up and scooter before you get there as it makes things so easy .

My husband and I stayed at Ban Thai River Garden for 17 days. This Resort is located in a nice quiet area, close by are coconut groves and buffaloes. Resort is small with 8 houses. In the Resort are home studio for a couple, and the large houses with two bedrooms, and an lounge area for friends or families with children. We lived in a house Studio Lotas. The house has a large room, a king size bed, a toilet and a bathroom, kitchenette, terrace and other facilities. The hotel has a great pool and area for relax. The territory of the Resort is large, well appointed, lots of trees with plumeria flowers. There is parking in resort. The beach is 15 minutes walk, but we rode by bike for 3 minutes. The beach is very beautiful, with clear water, palm trees and soft sand. Near the Resort is a 7-11 shop and a few cafes with tasty and cheap Thai food.
Separately want to say about the hotel managers. The couple Richard and Melissa.
We arrived at the Resort early in the morning at 9 o'clock, when everyone was asleep. Officially, check-in after 12. But we had no place to go. Richard took us and left our things at home. We asked the bike and 5 minutes later he was brought to us. Richard advised us to a great cafe . We went for a drive around the island and when we arrived in the afternoon, our house was ready. Richard and Melissa cool guys. We made friends. Did not want to leave.
We will recommend this resort to all our friends.
