My Wife and I have holidayed in Thailand frequently for the last 20 years and feel able to give an informed and objective review of our recent stay at Cape Panwa.

In the interests of fairness, I would first like to pinpoint the positives:
1) Our Hotel room was superb; huge bed, panoramic sea views on two sides.10/10 ( I won't divulge the room number, otherwise the Hotel would be plagued with room requests. Suffice to say, it was in the new wing.)
2) The Hotel, and its grounds, IS condusive to a relaxing Holiday.
3) Most of the guests were quiet and respectful. No noisy groups.
4) The breakfasts were perfectly fine, with plenty of variety to suit most tastes.
5) The Housekeeping and Andaman staff were marvellous.

Now the negatives:
1) Unlike most Thai Hotels, traditional Thai greetings and acknowledgement from staff is largely absent. We've never seen this before ( and we're very staff-friendly and speak a lot of Thai.)
2) The (fine dining) 'Top of the reef' Restaurant resembles a very bad 70's bistro, with a menu to match. And (I kid you not) they even place a sprig of parsley on top of the food ! ...I haven't seen that done in decades ! Bless them; it was So bad, we found it hilarious.
We ordered a bottle of white Shiraz at Panwa House and when the Waiter first poured it, the wine was warm ! (they'd literally took it off a hot shelf and put it into an ice bucket) He seemed genuinely bemused as to why we sent it back for more chilling.
3) You would think that the rather lovely private beach would be an eminent focus for the Hotel Management (it is, after all, what the majority of guests come for) and yet, unlike every other beach resort We've been to, there isn't a team of attendants clearing the beach early every morning.
A disgraceful amount of jetsam lay undisturbed for days (Some Hotel guests took to clearing it up themselves !)
Only when guests complained (or when there was a beach Wedding) did staff suddenly materialise to remove debris.
Those of you used to attentive beach attendants, taking care of your loungers and parasols, will be very disappointed. I think the staff hide all day in the shade somewhere, with no visible supervision. Elderly guests have to seek help from the staff at the Bamboo bar in this respect.
4) Admittedly, the lady in charge of the Bamboo beach restaurant is super-efficient (she also seems to double up as sunlounger attendant, for reasons already explained)
However, the service is rather brusque and the food is embarrassing.
5) The Spa was alluring and elegant, but the staff were disinterested and the massage treatments, perfunctory.

Maybe we expected too much. We normally receive exemplary quality and service in every other Thai Hotel, and this Hotel definitely doesn't merit a 5 star rating.
Having said that, we still enjoyed a relaxing stay (It does have a certain rugged charm.) Many of the return guests genuinely love the Hotel, so you may love it also.

My top tip would be to visit nearby Sri Panwa at least once during your stay. We ate there a few times and the superb staff, restaurants and magical ambience offer a luxurious antidote to the Cape Panwa.
If you phone them from the Hotel, they will pick you up in a funky tuk tuk. Go there before sundown for some pre-dinner cocktails, before eating in one of their fabulous Restaurants. (You will not be disappointed.)

We are glad to know that overall you enjoyed a relaxing stay at Cape Panwa and appreciate your sharing what you feel are our positive points, even though you found service at some of our outlets dissatisfactory – for this we apologise profusely. The management is looking into your specific complaints and will ensure improvements are made – as service is a priority with us.

Regarding the beach - Our beach, which is serviced by the team at the Bamboo Bar, is usually cleaned once a day in the morning but with extreme high and low tides for the moment we have extra amounts of rubbish brought in by the sea. We are aware of this problem and have now increased our cleaning shifts for this period.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor and would welcome the opportunity to serve you once again.

first i would like to say what a lovely hotel,we found it very clean, our room which was one of the cape suites was excellent, so was the view from our balcony over looking the little tram down to the beach. i would like to say how helpfull all the staff was . i fell and fractured my ankle the day before we was going home i would like to thank all the staff for there help ,especially Tim at the guest relations desk he was most helpfull to my husband sorting our insurance out. thank you all once again excellent service . margaret & brian .

I have been coming to Cape Panwa for seventeen years and it is like coming home. We feel that all guests are treated with help and cosideration by management and staff. I play golf at Phuket golf and country club. The resturants in the hotel and the village are of a very high standard .Sandy and Jennifer look after you on the beach.

We stayed at Cape Panwa for 7 nights in March 2012. I have to say it is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. We have travelled to Asia quite a lot over the past few years and would have to say that the staff at Cape Panwa made this one probably the best trip. We stayed in the Cape Suite with king sized bed, balcony spa, walk in wardrobe and living area. It was a great room - we loved it as it was very spacious.

The staff are always happy and willing to help out in any way possible with advice etc. Another great thing about the hotel is where it is situated. Up and down the hill there are various massage/spa business run by locals which are absolutely great to get a massage at. Barry London is also a really great bloke. He made me 2 suits. The market at the bottom of the hill each night is also great, and there are 3 or 4 restaurants around that are nice to eat at as well. All up it was a great place to stay. It's only a 45 minute drive to Patong which if you get to for around 700 Baht each way (any more than that and you're getting ripped off). We went with friends and enjoyed the seclusion, but also made a few shopping trips into Patong. All up, I would highly recommend Cape Panwa Hotel AND the general location of Cape Panwa to anybody.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the beach.

Thailand is a very beautiful country and the people are delightful....that is the positives now to the hotel experience. When we arrived at this hotel to say that we were dissapointed with our first room would be putting it mildly....looking out over a car park is not what i travel 13 hrs to look at.... I have better views staying at home. Although i admit that i expect high standards, because we were with friends who had brought us to Thailand for the first time, decided that i wouldn't 'fly' straight to reception and complain, until i had ascertain their opinions. Their view, believe it or not was worse than ours....they had people looking directly in from a bar!!!!!

Following me challenging the reception staff about our rooms, being told by him that they don't have sea view rooms i insisted on speaking with Duty Manager ... who promptly moved us the next morning to guess what rooms with a sea view!!!!

Our friends have highlighted general issues regarding cleanliness...so i won't go there as no beneifit in repeating the same comments.

Our third moved resulted in us having a leak in the 'built in' wardrobe and having to then get the assistance of General Manager, Mark. He appeared to be able to understand our frustrations, my husband at this stage was ready to get on the next flight home....he didnt feel like it was a relaxing holiday with all the messing about and had really had enough of this hotel to say the least. Mark, after showing him evidence of poor standards moved us to a private bungalow with its own pool...this was lovely and finally we relaxed for the last 5 days of holiday.

I spoke at lenghts to Mark about standards and i hope he has taken some of them on board if he wish to present this hotel as being 5 star....eating breakfast and not being offered tea or coffee is clearly not exceptable in my books. I would not return to this hotel and not recommend it if you want to be sure of 5 * service.
