“5 star fabulous location, heaven via a scoopon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2012

A very last minute decision to share my daughters holiday after her friend bailed! What a fabulous place Cape Panwa resort and Phuket itself is.
I had no ambition to travel to Phuket seeing it as a party destination however...I'd now go back in a heartbeat.
I like to arrange airport transfers from home as it's no fun after a long flight to wait in the heat and spend 2 hours on a crowded bus, good decision and cheap as chips.
We arrived at Cape Panwa resort down the bottom of Phuket Island itself (which is well away from Phuket town and Patong which I think is a bonus) and I was so relieved to see a beautiful, stylish tiered resort built down a to a gorgeous beach.
With the humidity high we changed into our bathers immediately and walked past the amazing pool with a line of wooden lounge chairs down quite a few steps past luxury villas all amongst a green lush tropical garden and rolling lawn to a beach scene straight out of a movie.
Picture this, blue sky, green clear ocean.smooth lawn, lounges sprinkled under shady palm trees, white pure sand and a cocktail shack! Only 2 other guests in sight.
I'm in heaven and I've only been here 10 minutes:)

We had no reason to leave the resort, we did, gladly came back to relax again or walk 2 minutes up the steep hill to the loveliest new massage spa at a fraction of the hotel spa cost. (Still reasonable by OZ standards). Dinner was great, cocktails everyday were great, staff great, taxi drivers and tour guides all great. So last day, my daughter is nervous to share the bill as we'd been living it up, want to know what the hotel bill came too with room paid for already? aud $450! For 5 days!
Go back? In a heartbeat.

We spent only a few days at the resort thus did not get to explore the entire place or visit the beach. Check-in was smooth and staff were friendly. It definitely is a 5-star hotel going by local standards. Although our room did not get a seaview, the spaciousness of the room and bathroom made up for the lack of scenic view. Bottled water and fruits were complimentary. Only managed to dine at the restaurant next to the main pool, food was good and service commendable. Likewise for breakfast. Only gripe is that there are birds waiting to hawk at your food and I feel that the hotel shouldn't lay out the plates and cutlery because no one is there to watch the birds and this is unhygienic when patrons use these items to eat. I suggest laying them out only when patrons dine at the table. Otherwise we would visit this place again for the tranquility and service rendered.

We went for our honeymoon 6 years ago and return in October 2012 through a Scoopon deal and we were SOOOO happy with everything. All good, had a lovely room which was huge and overlooking the main pool and ocean. Buffet breakfast is best I have ever had. We especially loved the pool at the far end of the resort as we had it to ourselves most days and it was well shaded with cooler water than the main pool - which is what we like. Room was immaculately cleaned and entire resort spotless.

It was about 40 minutes from Patong (main shopping and nightlife areas) but we liked that as we were in a quiet area with the resort having its own beach. Not for those wanting action and night scene but ideal if you want to get away from it all and relax or spend time with you family.

Highly recommended.

We have just returned from two weeks here and had the most amazing time. We are a young couple and found this hotel had exactly what we wanted for a relaxing luxurious holiday, we are desperate to go back. We read reviews on trip advisor before we went and I was concerned about comments about rude staff and the property being run down, but I now wonder if these people could possibly have been in the same hotel. I liked to think we are well travelled and have high standards and I cannot find fault with this hotel. You would have to look very closely to see any sign of rust etc that have been mentioned, the hotel is beautiful. The staff were so helpful and polite, they made you feel very special. The pool area is wonderful and the whole hotel is clean and well looked after. We ate at the hotel restaurants and tried all of the restaurants on the hill down to the sister hotel, we never had a bad meal. The view as you get to the top of the hill is stunning, you will never tire of it. The lighthouse bar is great for some happy hour drinks after dinner, it starts at 930. Don't be put off by the mention of a shuttle bus, it literally takes less than 5mins on this bus to get to the top of the hill, we walked it a few times but the weather was so hot that it is tough going! If you want livelier nightlife you can easily go to Patong in a taxi, everything is so cheap. We went to Phuket town, Patong, big bhudda and on various other independent trips as the taxis are cheap and easy to get either via the hotel or on your own. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this hotel, I would recommend it to anyone. Yes we may be used to London prices so were really happy with the cost of everything over there, but I also think that we know a high quality hotel when we stay in one, which cape panwa really is!

Before we stayed here for the first time in May of this year, I researched thoroughly and was surprised to find reviews from people who had stayed here up to 20 times. I couldn't understand why people would want to travel overseas to keep returning to the same country, let alone the same hotel or resort. Well, six months after our first stay we returned for a week of R&R&R (the third R being Romance, as this was to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary) and our experience was even better than the first time. We are hoping to return for a third visit some time next year, it really is that good.
I won't go into the same detail as my previous review (posted in June 2012 titled "Awesome") but want to mention a few highlights. Tim, the Guest Services Manager has a quiet efficiency about him, but get talking to him and he is a very funny and knowledable guy. The staff in Otters Bar and Top of The Reef restaurant are amazing, just like their cocktails and food. On the evening of our 25th anniversary they made us feel extra special and the seafood platter for two that we shared is a meal we will remember for ever.
Chirawan in Cafe Andaman, Jaran by the pool, in fact all of the staff were sensational. But a special mention for Bill, one of the porters. He is one of the nicest, friendliest people we have ever had the privelidge to meet and befriend. His smile and greeting and friendly chats every morning made a wonderful start to our day.
On the morning of our anniversary in a magical setting, just after sunrise we exchanged rings on the beach in front of the magnificent Panwa House, and we returned to our room after breakfast to find that it had already been made up, and the bed was decorated with a lovely arrangement of petals in the shape of a love heart, and a lovely vase of flowers. They went out of their way to make our special day even more special.
I would like to address points raised by recent reviewers who were less than complimentary in their comments. One mention that the hotel has "surly staff"... I am convinced these travellers were at a different hotel.
Another wrote of litter on the beach. Well I won't go into a basic science lesson except to say that the beach is tidal, but staff were on the beach every morning raking and cleaning up that which had washed up on the shore. I also cannot understand negative comments about the food quality or costs. Breakfast in the recently refurbished Cafe Andaman is as good as any 5 star resort at which we have stayed, and we have had some of the best, most memorable meals of our lives in Top of the Reef and Panwa House. As for negative comments about the Cape Panwa area in general, I am speechless. It is no doubt the most tranquil, picturesque place I have ever been to, with wonderful locals operating massage places, restaurants and bars which add to the amazing experience of staying at this wonderful, true five star hotel resort.

Room Tip: Go for a Cape Suite - sensational.

After purchasing our two week holiday off scoopon the reviews from trip advisor informed us that it would be a very nice holiday, which it certainly was. Other peoples reviews helped us get the most out of this holiday, such as avoiding the expensive hotel restaurants and getting in the village which was great. The tides make it difficult to swim 24/7 but guests are well informed when the best times to swim are. We stayed in a cape suite which was fantastic, clean and very large although the tv service isnt great (bring a laptop and a hdmi cable with plenty of movies). My major complaint with the hotel is the lack of free internet within the rooms....it wasnt nice sitting in 30 degree heat with 80% humidity to call loved ones or to answer emails, as the paid options are a bit expensive. overall the hotel is re-vamping its facilities and certainly makes you comfortable if you ask and i will return in the future as cape panwa is a truely beautiful place and cape panwa is a great hotel.

Room Tip: cape suites and ask for E and F rooms

I have waited over 6 weeks for the refund due me from Kuoni... whilst they liased with the hotel over our Boarding arrangements. The cheque finally arrived for £528.

It took four days and threats of management penalties to reverse our decision to upgrade to Half Board. Dietary needs meant that we could not eat many of the "either/or" options on the set menu.

Perhaps the Management can explain the shortfall in the funds we paid to Kuoni. Let it be a warning to the unsuspecting traveller!

(We were presented with vouchers to the daily value of 720 Baht for a fixed menu. This in turn was subject to a 10% Service charge and a further 7% Government tax.)

Perhaps this is the norm in hotels in Thailand? When we ate else where off site, we were not charged this. We had superb food in the local Indian restaurant, for example, and our bill was willingly met with a generous tip.

Perhaps this is why the staff are surly? I have to agree with the points raised by CraigL78. Who in their right mind is going to tip on top of an automatic levy? Perhaps that is why the majority found entertainment in the bars down the hill... apart from the Friday barbeque (which was great!), the hotel bars were deserted.

We had planned to return to the hotel over the Christmas period, but our holiday was overshadowed by a feeling of "rip off" which we did not enjoy.

Agreed, despite the fact that the Jacuzzi taking an age to fill, we found the facilities of the Cape Suite we had, more than acceptable for the 4* + that Kuoni advertises. However the food standards are barely 3*! Two meals were completely ruined... we could not be bothered to fuss.

We enjoyed the sweetness of the local peoples and the beauty of the off shore islands..

In hindsight I can concur with many of the negative observations about this hotel.

TIP FOR MANAGEMENT: Change your food and beverage policy and maybe your general staff will cheer up, just a tweek and you could return to the 5 stars you aspire to.

We kept quiet and bore our angst in silence. It left a bitter taste and we were glad to leave.
A great shame.

Our greatest feeling of warmth came from the House Maids, whose smiles were what I was looking forward to in Thailand! They sure deserved the little extra we gave on departure.

I hazard to guess that frequent visitors to this hotel, accept the mediocre breakfast as norm and eat infrequently in the hotel and enjoy of the independant restaurants in the village.

Room Tip: Any suite above ground floor and facing towards the private beach will offer stunning views. Please...

Thank you for your expressed concerns, along with the pros and cons of your stay with us. We appreciate your frank assessment of your perceived shortcomings of our operations and services at the Cape Panwa Hotel, Phuket. Such frank feedback serves to help us improve our service for all of our guests. Regarding dietary restrictions, we have a strict policy in place stating that half and full board packages are not suitable for guests with dietary restrictions. Our team has contacted relevant third parties reminding them to inform guests of this policy. Regarding the meal vouchers, these offer exceptional value allowing guests to join either a Buffet Night or the 3 course Set Menu. However, guests seeking a ‘lighter’ meal are recommended to order a la carte. Thank you again for your feedback.
