“Be sure to check your reservation”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2011

We booked this hotel in December, 2010, for a 7 night stay in Feb., 2011. When we arrived, we were told that the hotel was overbooked and we should come back in 2 days. When we raised a stink, staff gave us the name of another hotel and said they would pay for the two days, then we could come back. We checked this hotel through Tripadvisor and discovered nothing but bad reviews. We given the name of a second hotel, but another Tripadvisor check yielded the same result as the first, all bad. Finally were given the name of a third hotel, the Akina, which had mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, but by this time we were fed up and drove to the other side of the island and checked in. To our delight, the Akina was wonderful, so we stayed the entire 7 days there, and By the Sea paid the bill. Because we were unable to stay at By The Sea, I cannot write a review of the property itself, however, because we were never notified of the overbook and had to move to another hotel, I cannot and will not recommend this hotel to anyone. If one still chooses to book there, by all means make sure you have a for confirmed room before you leave home, as you could be in for big surprise when you get there.

We really enjoyed this hotel. Staff were lovely (if not very strong in English) the room was really a suite and very beautiful. We had a balcony with chairs and a super view of the ocean and the pool area. Towels were provided for use on beach and poolside, as were very attractive beach bags. The restaurant served delish food. Breakfast is included in the price of the room and it is a full, hot, br fst buffet that was well-prepared, fresh and tasty. Everything was immaculate!!! Such a nice change from Bangkok, which we really enjoyed but found filthy (and we live in China!) Now, drawbacks: you were far from any real towns or villages but the free shuttle would take you places if you wanted to wander a bit. At night it was peaceful and quiet, the TV was large and many stations in English were available. There was also HBO. So, overall, the place is GREAT! I almost forgot to mention, there is also a nice fitness room with weights, etc.

First the positive:The location is remote and relatively quiet.Transport is needed as there is no local bus. The hotel does supply a shuttle to Phuket town but the hours of service are a little restricted. We hired a car from Phuket at 1500Baht per day. Beachfront location is beautiful, although it's a bit difficult to swim at low tide due to all the rocks. (During our time there high tide was at about 10.30 pm and it seemed to be low tide all day long) The pool is lovely and you can benefit from the entertainment at the Novotel next door, as the sound travels over the fence! There is no entertainment at the By The Sea. As has been said before there are two great Beach Bars and massage shacks along the beach to the left of the hotel. You don't need to use the hotel gym because there are 60 steps from the pool up to the ground floor and reception level. If you are lucky you can hitch a lift in the golf buggy, if not you will come back with thighs of steel!

Breakfast was OK and it was lovely to be able to eat almost on the beach under a shady tree.

The less good: The rooms are large but tired looking. Our room was in very poor condition - We had badly torn bed linen and a pane of glass missing from one of the wardrobe doors.Difficult to close and impossible to lock the patio doors. The manager, Jack, did his best to address problems and the pane of glass was replaced the next day, but these niggles should have been picked up by housekeeping and remedied between lets. We often had no hot water in our room and the heater cut out twice mid-shower in one evening.

We were moved to a room on the upper floor. Here we had hot water and the holes in the bed linen were smaller and we could lock the doors, however the inside of the shower cubicle door was absolutely filthy with soap scum and black mould. No-one had cleaned the inside of that shower door since who-knows when. Again poor control at housekeeping level - ( I used to be in the trade, so I know what I'm talking about here)

The staff lacked warmth towards the guests and as we had come from a hotel with amazing relation skills the lack of it here was blinding. Jack the manager admitted the staff don't speak English with the exception of him and the front house manager. This is not a good thing in a hotel that advertises for an international clientele, and it leads to a lot of problems and frustrations on both sides, especially when things aren't going too well. During our stay the hotel was overrun by arrogant, beligerent yet miserable Russians who partied on until the early hours and then left all their rubbish outside around the pool. That was the final straw for us and we checked out after four nights.

To sum up, this was probably a beautiful hotel in its heyday, but it is a bit run down now and shabby with a manager who is struggling to keep on top of things. Needs a bit of investment and a change of housekeeping together with some more English speaking staff. For the money we paid - it represented very poor value.

Nice hotel, friendly staff, super pool and good location with plenty of eating options if required - the hotel, three beach restaurants and another on the road near the view points over the bay. Our tripped marred somewhat by the boorish, drunken behaviour of many of the Russian guests who were there - drinking (i do not exaggerate- a least a litre of vodka each per day),singing, slamming doors, swimming in the pool outside of permitted hours and leaving their detritus on the beach. The staff need to get a grip- not really the Thai style- or it will ruin this as a venue.

In Phuket you will find that hotels are not actualy on the beach but would have to cross the road to get to it. This Hotel was actually on the beach and with 37 fantastic rooms. Very big, with own kitchen fridge. The rooms are so big that a family of 4 could easily stay in these rooms.Balcony overlooking the sea and Islands Views. The beach is a mixture of coral and sand but beautiful, difficult to swim in the sea as full of rocks but it didn't stop us. Blue sea, sand and quiet. It is very quiet. There is not much to do around here so would need to venture out. We hired a scooter and ventured to various other beaches and restaurants around the area. The Hotel food is very good quality, but although we weren't looking for a party scene we had itchy feets and wanted to explore the island and the Scooter was the best way. On the beach they have two very good quality beach bars serving Food, drinks and music ! Nice way to wind your evening on the beach with a cold beer and spicy prawns. If you want you could also have a massage or hire a scotter from the beach bars. They also organised trips to phi phi islands etc and i would recommend definitley going to the Islands. The price ofered to us was reasonable but cheaper than the quotes we were getting on research with other travel companies.

People, you gotta stay here to appreciate the quality and bliss of Phuket.

We heard that Phuket is terribly crowded and touristy, but this getaway spot was a perfect spot for relaxing. The apartments are absolutely clean, and we could watch the sun set over the water from our bed. Lovely pool, and delicious buffet breakfast. You can't really swim in the beach water just outside the hotel because it is so rocky, but we LOVED the free bike and kayak rentals!! Being able to kayak in the blue waters and bike around the cape was our favorite part of our whole trip to Phuket.

Also, if you turn left and go down the beach a bit, there are 2 seaside food stands with amazing thai seafood curries!!! Very inexpensive too.

By The Sea is a lovely beach resort with a pool and it's own chunk of private beach right outside. It took about 45 minutes to drive from Phuket airport to the hotel and cost around 800THB - travellers be warned, Phuket is considerably more expensive than most other places in Thailand so don't be too surprised by the high travel costs! The hotel is quite out of the way so if you're looking for a party scene then this probably isn't the place for you. However if you're like me and you don't mind the peace and quiet but still want things to see and do then this will work nicely for you.

Upon arrival we were given a free upgrade to a superior suite which had a kitchen area with fridge, hob, sink and cupboards, a dinning area with a huge dinning table and chairs, a living area with a tv and sofa, two ensuite bedrooms - a master bedroom with a larger bathroom including a bath and access to the large balcony, and a second bedroom, still considerably well sixed with plenty of storage space and a nice ensuite with a shower. The suite was decorated to a nice standard and was very clean and comfortable. The room was perhaps wasted on us as there are only 2 of us but would be perfect for a family or a group staying together.

The hotel itself has a nice sized pool with an attached kiddies pool and jacuzzi area right next to the open air hotel restaurant where the breakfast buffet is served and you can also order lunch and dinner. The breakfast was good - usual fare of cereals, fruits, cooked foods, etc. The hotel has access to it's own chunk of beach which runs right in front of the pool and restaurant so you can eat you're green curry while watching the sun setting on the sea or you can alternate easily between having a dip in the pool and having a dip in the sea! The hotel has a gym area - which we looked at and it seemed small - but you're on holiday so don't even think about going to the gym! As well as providing a laundry service which was pretty cheap - around 10THB for 1 pair of underware - the hotel also provides a laundrette where you can wash and iron you're own clothes. I think it was around 10THB to wash a whole load. This is excellent if you're travelling on a budget or just like you're clothes washed in a certain way.

Staff we very friendly and helpful at the hotel. Thew restaurant and bar staff were great and brought us cocktails to drink while having a late night swim. There is a front of house manager who speaks really good english so look out for him.

As mentioned in the title the hotel is a bit out of the way but as mentioned in the post it does offer a lot. Also if you walk down the little strip of beach you will come across a few beach bars and restaurants which we ate and drank in and had a really good and affordable time. If you do feel like venturing out to see other parts of Phuket it will take between 20-30 minutes to get to places like Kata and Karon beach. We went to Kata beach and although the beach was nice, it was absolutely packed with tourists and there were burger joints everywhere - it was like being in Tenerife...

I would recommend this hotel as we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. There are things to do and see in the surrounding area but it may be a bit quiet for the more party-inclined folk.
