“South Tyrol gem”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

Just returned from a week at Bad Ratzes. Such comfortable and hospitable family orientated hotels are hard to find. Situated at the very top of a beautiful valley amid a network of fine walks and alpine meadows. Despite the distance from the village the excellent bus services made exploring the area trouble free. Information and guidance from the resident proprietor sisters and their friendly staff always available with a smile. Excellent choice of local based meals, a myriad of salad combinations to suit every taste and part self service style to suit any appetite. A most enjoyable week.

Room Tip: We loved the mountain view room and soon got used to the sound of the river rapids overnight.

Run by a family for families, this is the perfect hotel. Everything has been thought of, even a special rack for hanging washing to dry. Comfortable and beautifully furnished, the food is excellent. Great for children - activities for the young organised by special staff, so that parents can get away by themselves - and there is a games room where teenagers can relax and chill out. Charming proprietors, backed up by an excellent staff, make this a stress free and relaxing experience.

Room Tip: Best view from east side of floor 4, but river migth disturb some. Quitest side is the west.

There is something special about this delightful family run hotel. Nothing is too much trouble. Rooms are very comfortable indeed. The food is of exceptional quality as everything is of perfect quality, very fresh and locally sourced. The range of fruit and vegetables is quite amazing and it takes a week to work your way round the fabulous buffet available at breakfast. Lunch is included but if you are going out for the day then the hotel is happy for you to take a picnic from the selection at breakfast which is most unusual. The cheese board is very tempting as are the range of fruits and cakes laid out each day for afternoon tea.

There are a huge range of walks available in the area but even it rained it would be very relaxing. There are cosy sitting areas, a gorgeous swimming pool and sauna plus beauty treatments available. An hourly local bus runs free of charge to the cable car up to the alps or into the nearby village.

Room Tip: All rooms are good and all have different views either over the stream, the haymeadow or across to t...

I have been going to bad Ratzes for 5 years now and I have never been disappointed. Perfect for kids of all ages (I have 3 children all very different age groups) especially in the summer. Just beware you might put on a few kilos as the food is to die for! The staff make us feel part of the family.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the river are sunnier

Frau Eva and Frau Waltraud Scherlin run this hotel with such enthusiasm. The hotel has wonderful views of the mountains. The standard double room we had was clean, spacious and well equipped. We had one of the rooms in the new part of the hotel which was very quiet and peaceful. The large choice of food was very good including the afternoon tea and you could either have lunch at the hotel or make yourself a picnic from the buffet. All in all a lovely 3 night stay. The only thing I would say is that if you want a peaceful stay if you have no children check when the schools are on holiday. If you have children this has to be a perfect holiday they go out of their way to make sure there is something for the children everyday. There is a free bus that runs every hour to take you down to the town or the cable car to the mountains. It is certainly a little gem. We were touring Europe and this was our first stop.

We stayed for a week during which the weather deteriorated from hot and sunny to cold and wet. Our standard double room overlooked the rear patio with a stunning view of the mountains close by. The bedroom and bathroom were clean, spacious and very well-equipped.
Reading rooms are well furnished with log fires (which unfortunately were needed).
We were on full board – there are no restaurants nearby. However, the choice and availability of food for all meals was exceptional, including afternoon tea.
The area has many attractions and interests from walking to sight-seeing. Guides and information provided by the hotel was plentiful and free with telescopic walking sticks available – again free.
Frau Eva and Frau Waltraud Scherlin, who own and run the hotel, and their staff took a personal interest in their guests to ensure that they made the best of their stay.
Lovely hotel, stunning scenery, attentive staff, excellent food – what more could you want?

"The sunny Schlern plateau lies surrounded by dazzling mountain peaks, wooded glens, and inviting alpine meadows"--the perfect introduction to this beautiful South Tirol region of Italy. Delicious food, excellent staff, wonderful service, fabulous views--the perfect place to enjoy hiking, walking, or just looking. The hotel offers free garage parking and a complimentary shuttle stops at the hotel nine times a day to provide transportation to the area's many opportunities for exploration. The hotel is a family-friendly hotel but the property is large enough to provide those traveling without children a secluded place to relax. Sisters Eva and Waltraud Scherlin continue their parents' life work in the same spirit with enthusiasm and optimism as they welcome their guests to this lovely region.
