“Gorgeous hotel in a unique location”
Reviewed 12 October 2011

Our first time in Sicily and we cannot wait to come back to Villa Sant'Andrea. The unique location of the sophisticated hotel combined with the gorgeous grounds made our stay very special. The meals were great as were the professional and friendly staff. Great concierge too.

We stayed here for 7 nights for our honeymoon. The location is perfect, away from the tourist trap of Taormina but within 10 minutes so the village is easy to visit for it's many restaurants and shops. The hotel itself is luxurious and very comfortable. The staff are fantastic and so attentive to guests needs. They make such an effort to make the stay unforgettable. I have stayed here before, before the pool was built and it is a much welcome addition to the facilities. We had it to ourselves most days. The food is excellent with a huge choice for breakfast. We didn't dine in the hotel in the evenings as the prices were a little too high in our opinion but the snack bar for lunch is very reasonable with a good choice of items. We can't wait to return here and would highly recommend it!

We have just returned from twelve enjoyable nights at Villa Sant'Andrea. The situation of the hotel is delightful with the sea shore and pebble beach directly in front of the hotel. The sea shelves very quickly and you are out of your depth within a few metres, perfect for swimming. As an alternative to the beach there is a new somewhat small swimming pool which is kept at a warm temperature.

The breakfast is excellent, served under the awning on the terrace, in your room, or on your balcony. As you will see from the hotel brochure the majority of the balconies are quite small and you may wish to upgrade your room to ensure more outside space.

Meals tend to be typical Orient Express prices, ie a little on the expensive side, but the hotel shuttle up to Taormina and the cable car within a couple of minutes walk from the hotel and of course the many restaurants within walking distance, should ensure that you have plenty of choice to cover all price ranges.

We were fortunate enough to enjoy a magnificent firework display on the beach one evening and of course Carmello at the piano on the terrace after dinner most evenings.

We explored Taormina and it is very easy to book trips further afield; our favourite was to Syracuse. All in all a lovely holiday and we hope to return very soon.

We finished our Sicilian holiday with one day/one night at the Villa Sant'Andrea. The level of this service at this hotel is exceptional to the point that you feel as if you have your own staff dedicated to your every need - except for 1 item I write about at the end of this review.
The room we had - Deluxe Sea Balcony View - provided us with an amazing view, balcony and outdoor sitting area. The amenities in the bathroom ranged from Bulgari bath salts to Molten Brown mouthwash and included an intergrate DVD player, stereo system and some of the nicest sheets I've ever slept on in a hotel (and we travel a lot). The breakfast provided a huge variety of expected staples to glutten-free granola and a variety of Sicilian pastries/treats. We enjoyed the infinity pool on the first day we arrived and the tiny pebble beach the second day, as well as the Evian Mist that the staff provided us in the heat of the day. The meals at the hotel were delicious and although expensive, very very good and probably one of the best meals we had in Taromina over the 5 days we were there -- although the Casa Grungo was very good as well it didn't have the ocean view. The prior 4 days we stayed in the upper part of Taromina at the Villa Diodoro and were very pleased with it, but this Orient Express hotel is in a completely different league. If you can afford the Villa Sant'Andrea stay here, even if it is only for a few days. We will definitely return to Taromina and stay here again or its sister hotel, which is across from the Diodoro, called Grand Hotel Timeo.

Lastly, our stay wasn't perfect, our room had a horrible smell. We stayed in room 219. If you get this room make sure you ask them to change you immediately if the foul smell that was in our room is still there. It smelled like the sulfur that comes out of the plumbing mixed with dead animal. After about 1 hour of trying to air out the room, I called the front desk and asked to switch rooms. We were taken to another Sea View room that had a partially obstructed view which was a huge step down from where we were already staying. This room was about 2 rooms away from reception on the same floor as reception. Don't let them put you in this room either. Then they took me to a junior suite on the other side of the hotel / against the mountainside and separated from the main hotel by the driveway. Although this Junior Suite was gorgeous, there was absolutely no clear view of the harbor/beach, which is again, the reason we booked the room we did. So although they tried to provide us with options, they said these were the only rooms avaiable as they were fully booked. If this hotel was as top service as I would expect, they should've given us at least a free drink or lunch or something as an apology for having us stay in the room. Yes we had a choice to move, but to give up a room with the view that you've paid for because of a smell that is their fault, it just not right.
We ended up sleeping with the doors wide open and I told the management they'd better fix the smell problem before the next guests arrived. Make sure you ask not to stay in this room!
As a result, I'm going to have to lower the service rating I give them. I've had better service and sleep quality at Hilton franchise hotels, which isn't saying much for the Orient Express brand.
We stayed at this hotel from 11 - 12 Sept 2011.

Room Tip: Again please make sure you do not stay in room 219. The other rooms I was in didn't have the sm...

Great hotel. Was there with my fiance and another couple. Contrary to the usual, expect nothing less than what you see in the pictures of the hotel's website. The whole hotel (including the bedrooms) are new and elegant and the see water is beautiful in different tones of green and blue as you see in the pictures. The room was a lot bigger than I expected but, to be fair, we must have received an upgrade as I booked the cheapest room and got one with see view and big balcony (so this review can be a bit biased in favor of hotel...) The service is attentive and warm. Breakfast was very good in the terraza with a great view of the beach. We were under a half board 3 night special rate and found it great from a cost-benefit standpoint, considering the prices paid in similar luxury hotels/restaurants in Italy. The possibility of having the meals in the sister orient express property (Grand Hotel Timeo) was great so that you don't have to eat everyday in the same place/menu. Taormina is a very charming and romantic village. Would definitely recommend it to friends and return.

We had a great vacation at this hotel. It's beautiful, clean, the service is perfect and the most amazing breakfast we've ever had at a hotel.

The only thing to consider is that the hotel's restaurant (which is quite good) is a bit too expensive so that should be taken into account.

other than that, the staff was extremely helpful with everything and the location and beaty of the hotel makes it a "must stay" in Mazzaro.

Enjoy!!

Room Tip: If you come with a car, take into account that parking is an additional cost. we didn't know or...

We stayed at the Villa Sant Andrea for 6 days. Loved the position, the friendly staff, the great food! We had particular dietary needs which they accomodated without a problem. position is great - we preferred being at the beach rather than at the top which is is much busier, etc. The shuttle or cable car ride to the top is so efficient that it is easy to get to the top for a meal, some shopping, or a bit of sight seeing. Are planning our next visit....

Room Tip: if stairs are a problem, you need to mention this
