“If you don't know anything about cotton production...”

Exclusive Cottons of the Caribbean
Attraction details

We wanted to visit this place as we knew nothing about cotton production and some ads we saw looked interesting. It is near Orchid World- and when you drive in just looks like a farming operation so we were not really sure where to go or if they did tours. Anyway, we just asked one of the staff, and the pointed us to a big green building, and a nice guy in there toured us around for $10Barbados dollars. It was interesting, and he was not in a rusk so we could ask all kinds of questions and he just kept answering them. The cotton was there (from Barbados farms) in piles and we saw it going through the gin (in operation while we were there), collecting seeds, and pressing seeds for oils, plus baling up the cotton.
The only item missing was we actually were also interested to see some cotton plants growing, so if they even had a little test plot there with some plants, it would have been neat to see them.
We were probably there 45 min or so. It was a nice visit.

This is an unusual attraction, right in the centre of the island (look for signs to Orchid World just round the corner. It is full of history and technical information. Do you actually know what a cotton gin is?? Or what happens to cotton once it is picked off a bush looking like cotton wool and turned into soft material for clothing? Neither did I until shown round this factory by the remarkable 'eminence gris' of Exclusive Cottons, Director, Lucyanne Field. What a great tour, and when you get to the shop at the end of the tour there is a fatastic selection of lovely exotic cotton goods - well-named as 'exclusive'. Most international travellers are familiar with the luxury of sea island cotton - here you have a good selection of the soft and - must be admitted - expensive towels, sheets, ladies' clothing an gift items. But they are the best in the world. You can also have clothes made to measure and painted to order by a first class artist. I just ordered a white dress for New Year's Eve decorated round the hem with flying fish, wings highlighted with iridescence. Now that is what I call a souvenir of Bardados.

This is a fabulous and interesting place to visit. The West Indian Sea Island Cotton is available in many forms. Clothing, household linens, gifts and yard goods. There are also yarns in bleached white and natural for weaving, knitting and crochetting. The tour of the Ginnery showing the process from the arrival of the hand harvested Sea Island Cotton through to the bailing of the cleaned cotton to be shipped for spinning is extremely interesting. All the parts and by-products of the cotton fibre processing are used for yard goods, oils, animal feed and selected seeds for the new crop. The fabric is soft and the sheets and towels are of the highest quality. We bought some gift items as souvenirs and some household linens in the showroom after the tour. It is an easy taxi ride from St. Lawrence Gap and a chance to see the interior of the Island.

We visited the showroom for Exclusive Cottons of the Caribbean on a recent trip to Barbados. If your looking for an interesting stop on your visit, include this on your itinerary. The showroom has samples of their beautiful clothing, linens and accessories for sale. You'll also get to see a working mill, and insight into growing part of the island economy you might not have considered.

We purchased a number of items, both as island crafted souvenirs as well as some linens we plan to use at home.

The staff are very friendly and have a wealth of knowledge to share on the growing, manufacturing and design of cotton products in the Caribbean.

Something different for a rainy day, or when you've had enough sun.

There's also an interesting orchard farm (Orchard World) nearby that you could include in your visit.

Cheers
