“Deep in the Black Forest . . .”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

Deep in the beautiful Black Forest, one can follow a narrow 8 km road north of scenic Road 294 and east of Wolfach to the village of St. Roman. Upon arrival, one realizes the Adler Hotel dominates with its presence in a very charming manner. This was our third or fourth stay in the past 5 years and is definitely one of our favorite places in Europe.

We requested a particular room we enjoy to overlook the countryside and the Church of St. Roman. Our preference was honored.

The half board menu is worthy of consideration with exquisite appetizers, the second course, the salad bar, choice of 3 entrees, and a homemade dessert. A Wellness menu provides an interesting array of choices too.

Through the years the hotel staff has always provided guidance on information sought whether it be an English-speaking physician, hikes/walks of varying difficulties, and even careful detail and description of regional German dishes on the menu.

The Haas family is personable, friendly, and welcoming. Both Mr. and Ms. Haas visit the guests some time during a meal. They also employ a dedicated multi-lingual staff with whom one can communicate with any query at all.

We hope to return in the future.

Room Tip: We like the "older" parts of the hotel--but perhaps some "young folk" might pref...

Came across this wateringhole whilst out mountain biking, we had beer and food from their "snack" menu although that term does it a service.
We were in our biking gear but no worries the welcome, service and food were beyond reproach.
As you would expect from a really nice hotel the food wasn't cheap but when is superb and thoroughly enjoyable that bit extra goes unnoticed so to speak.
Lovely break in fantastic countryside.
We haven't stayed there so can't comment on the accommodation but would expect it to equal or surpass expectations.
Ian

We stayed at the hotel over Easter. This is a traditional values hotel, with the Hass family very much at the centre of things - even their pleasant young teenage son helped out at breakfast. They work hard and so do their staff with the objective of making the guests feel happy and welcome. We thought they succeeded.

We were the only English people staying but they translated the menu perfectly for us. The menu was varied and beautifully presented and one evening there were two courses on the gala menu that we did not like so said that we would not take them. However, the very helpful Holger (a big character, perfect English and very funny chap) insisted that we have something else and 2 other courses were supplemented. We took our meals in the conservatory dining area which was very attractive and the acoustics were good so you didn't hear echoing chatter or the clatter of tables being cleared (one of my personal pet hates are noisy dining rooms).

The lunches are taken in a separate area and never failed to deliver a good standard. Considering this is included in your board, we were amazed at how generous, well presented and well-cooked the food was. The cakes were fabulous - not overflowing with cream or silly stuff like cupcakes but proper good quality fresh cakes baked on the premises and you could have as much as you liked. There was also coffee and soft drinks which were available all day as well. The nice thing was that you could sit and eat in your dressing gown if you'd popped down from the spa. This dining area overlooked the hillside where you regularly saw the deer grazing.

Our room in the new wing was very spacious and immaculately clean. The cleaners seem to do them in teams of about 2-3 people so they are in/out very quickly but no compromise on the standard. The only thing we felt was that the huge bathroom was lacking a bath which would have been nice although there is a very large walk-in shower. There was a balcony with good quality, comfortable chairs and a table.

We loved the quiet zones. In one there is a (realistic flame) fire that was going during the day giving the room a cosiness, there's lovely view to be enjoyed and the peaceful atmosphere - it was a real treat. These areas are adult only and it is quite clear on entering. There's a mix of comfortable rockers, recliners and water beds and there was always enough for the guests. There's water jugs available so you don't have to venture out of the room for refreshment.

The spa was very impressive for a hotel of this type. Once again, immaculately clean, loads of fresh towels (nothing annoys us more than being given one towel to sit on and dry off - yuk!) and just the right measure of different saunas/damp rooms. There's even a two-person cabin with an infra red heater for core body heating which we like and you don't see often. You could start here and follow the various zones round. My husband had a massage which he said was good but we didn't make any use of the beauty salon area so can't comment/

When we arrive (here or anywhere) my job is to unpack and organise - and my husband's is to check out the TV and wifi. Well, the room doesn't have wifi so that thwarted him for using the iPad but also the mobile phone had no signal. This had its advantages as my husband didn't spend hours cradling the iPad like his first born child and I wasn't tempted to have a sneaky game of Temple Run when he was in the shower. If we needed to use the mobile phone we did so when we were in the car in Wolfach. You find out you don't need these things as much as you think when they are not there! As for TV, it had BBC news service coverage which was fine but who wants to watch it anyway (well, my husband actually who wanted the football results!)

We didn't do much walking. This was due to the weather we experienced whilst there and recuperating from a virus, rather than the lack of lovely area to walk. However, the one day we did go out was just after a day of snowfall in brilliant sunshine and it was the most lovely walk by the hillside and through the forest. We stopped for a moment and just listened to the absolute silence! Bliss!

We spent a weekend in this hotel at the end of November. We went just for 2 nights with the intention to relax in the hotel so we didn t really explore the area around. It was a very pleasant experience. The personel is very friendly, helpful and professional. The rooms are very clean. The hotel offers swimming pool and spa possibilites( altough the outside swimming was a bit cold for our taste). There also organised activities such as yoga classes and hiking in the area. We had all meals included. The food was abundant and very good.Overall, we had a very pleasant and relaxing experience in reasonable prices. We would definitely go back!

My Wife and I stayed three nights on half board in a Type 8 Room in the main building. The room was very large, well equipped and immaculately clean and well maintained.Rooms in the huge new extension are probably even better. The only drawback was no bath. The new spa is fantastic and my wife enjoyed a very professional massage. The pools are great.
The restaurant is in three sections, one indoor in typical heavy wood,a winter garden which is in fact a huge conservatory and an outside terrace. All three are pleasant but the food was mixed. On half board there was only a choice of main course.Starters and desserts were fine but mains were very boring and heavy for summer. It was almost as if there were two chefs involved, one young and modern and the other very traditional. And if I never see an Austro/German salad bar again,I won't be disappointed. The Adler's was very tired.
The Adler is a bit off the beaten track but worth a detour and if you enjoy walking and/or cycling there are plenty of trails starting from the hotel.

This family hotel is superb in every way, spotlessly clean and large rooms, with the finest wellness centre and certainly the newest in tha world. Lovely restaurant and excellent staff. The Hass Family are always in attendance (even the mother who is 87.) Ideal for walkers but great for older guests because there are excellent facilities within the hotel and a lift to all floors . We have stayed here 6 times. It's 5 Km from the main road and a lovely drive. You certainly need a car.

Room Tip: Ask for a view overlooking the front of the hotel across the valley looking at the church. They all...

I had a wonderfull stay at this hotel.
The food was nice , service was quick.
The new wellnes was outstanding.

The only minor thing was that there was no thee or coffee in the hotelroom.
Maybe for a reason, but then a solution would be to have a thee/coffee bar open at night somewhere in the hotel.

And unfortunately the free wifi didn't work in my room, probably because of the heavy fire resitant room doors (open door helped)
So wired internet might be a good solution.

So in the end there's not much to complain about, i realy had a relaxing time and would realy recommend this hotel.
