This hotel is located in Perleberg, Germany, which is the part of Germany that used to be the communist German Democratic Republic. After the wall came down, Germany invested an enormous amount of money in stimulating the former GDR economy. First, transportation was improved, than came a better power supply, reorganisation (or closure) of companies, etc. etc. As a result the area which formerly was the GDR looks in many ways more modern than the 'old' BRD (West Germany). And this also reflects in the cities and towns in these "Neue Bundesländer": Perleberg truly has become a very nice little city. The surroundings are really ideal for long walks and cycling. It is, after all, quite a rural area.
The Deutscher Kaiser hotel has been under the care of one family for many years, and after the iron curtain came down, and Germany reunited, the whole hotel was thoroughly modernized and expanded, without, however, causing any damage to the historical interior design.
The rooms, at least those in the new built wing, are quite 'spartan', but as a business traveler, I don't mind.
The restaurant, however, offers, amongst other things of course, local specialties and is really, REALLY good.
One small warning, however: although: my employer is a Scottish company, and of course they are doing their bookings through a Scottish travel agency. That travel agency told us it was next to impossible to get a confirmation from the hotel that the room was actually booked. Upon my arrival, in fact, I notified that, as expected, no reservation was made for me. I asked the (friendly) staff for explanation, explained to them that my travel agency never got back any booking confirmation from them, and they told me they were convinced the booking request was fake (!) I also have the impression they didn't quite understand the English document that was faxed to them. Nevertheless, a room was available, and I had quite a nice stay during my work.
OK, this area of Germany is maybe not a travel goal for business people right this moment, so I can understand they were not quite familiar with international bookings, but as the former GDR is evolving in a good direction, and business is slowly but surely growing, I think this hotel has all the potential to become a very good business hotel, next to being already a fine family hotel, or a place for a romantic stay.
