“WOW”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

This trip was booked through African Travel with Wilderness Safaris, and what a trip it was!!! The King's Pool staff was fabulous and the accommodations were beautiful, very spacious, most comfortable, and the food was delicious. Be prepared to gain a few pounds during this visit. Each day there was breakfast, morning coffee with snacks during safari, brunch, afternoon tea, starters before dinner, and dinner...and with five chefs, every bite was delicious. Don't overload your luggage; King's Pool provides laundry service and clothes are returned same day. This was a fantastic service. I only wore half of what I took. Game viewing was ***OUTSTANDING***, and OD, the guide, was not only a professional, but was friendly, accommodating, patient, and passionate about his job. It was so very evident that he loves his job and truly wants to share his knowledge and experiences with the guests. He had a terrific sense of humor and seemed "one with nature," and continues to be able to say, "WOW," despite doing this job daily. OD knew the history of the pride of lions and the leopard; he knew the biological intricacies of all the species and readily answered every question he was asked, even spelling terms that the guests were unfamiliar with. He was fantastic and he went out of his way to track and find animals that the guests particularly wanted to see. Elephants (easy to spot), leopards (not so easy, but accomplished...TWICE), baboons, a pride of lions, a bachelor group of lions closing in of the pride, vervet monkeys, mongoose, red lechwe, giraffes, buffalo, bushback, impala, duiker, galago (bushbaby), scrub hare, hippos, kudu, oribi, sitatunga, springbok, warthogs, waterbuck, African wildcat, zebras, and wild dogs....OD found them all in addition to a huge number of birds. He knew them all!!! He was so good at his job, that it appeared he was able to radio ahead and call out the animals he wanted us to see. The experience was overwhelming! Thank you, OD, for the attention to everything! I don't think I've ever been cared for as much on any vacation I've ever taken. Also, a special thanks to Julie, Ben, Rikki, Onnie, and Lebo, for the hospitality and for making me feel part of your special family at King's Pool. Wonderful!!! W-O-W!!!

Room Tip: Views are great from all rooms! If you travel in Africa winter, take silk underwear; you'll nee...

We were booked here by Wilderness Safaris, an excellent company in every way, and having stayed in a number of game lodges over the years, we believe Kings Pool to be the very best. Not only is the setting and the location very beautiful, and the game viewing quite splendid, but the service and friendliness of all the staff is exceptional. It is difficult to single out one because each and every one we dealt with was helpful, charming and treated us as if we were long standing close friends. Don't hesitate to visit Kings Pool. You'll have excellent accommodation, food and wine, beautiful surroundings, good game viewing and believe that you have had a glimpse of heaven!

After 3 days at Vumbura Plains in the Delta, we flew over to Kings Pool. A totally different landscape and different feel to the delta but none the less beautiful. The camp is more "african" in style to the other one. Rooms have a great view across the river and with the hippos, we also had the resident male lion of the area roar during 2 nights of our stayed, along with the hippos and elephants trumpeting - that was special to hear - the real noises of Africa. Elephant encounters are superb, game is excellent particularly for seeing the predetors. Guides are great, local Batswana staff are wonderful - we'd be happy to return again.

Room Tip: Sleep is only affected by how many animals are making noise during the night - which didn't both...

This camp is in a very beautiful, remote concession right on the Linyanti river. This is the same river that becomes the Chobe river, as it flows east and then flows into the Zambezi river at Kasane. The difference to the Chobe area is that one feels almost alone in the wilderness. No boats, safari-vehicles etc rushing by all the time. Complete bliss!!
We had excellent game viewing, with knowlegable guides, who know all of the 15 leopards that traverse the area individally, as well as tha 3 packs of wild dogs that hang around. We had a once in a lifetime experience when the dogs killed an Impala and devoured it while we were watching. Our guide knew exactly what their next move would be and positioned the vehicle perfectly. The next night the same happened, but we lost them in the thickets.
As for the rooms, one can hardly get better and more beautiful. The private pool was a highlight. The rooms are huge and comfortable and tastily furnished.
The food was absolutely devine. Appart from variety and choice, the attention to detail was superb. The wine sellection was of the best in Southern Africa. I loved the champaigne (South African Method Cap Classic-made the champaigne method) served at lunch and high tea!! It was also special to be able to dine privately, which is a plus at a premier camp.
Our staff were friendly and caring, and the fealing in the camp relaxed and peaceful.
I strongly recommend this camp to any traveller who can afford it. It is amazing how they can set a level of standards this high at a location so far in the wilderness. It must be a logistic nightmare, but Wilderness Safari's runs it smoothly and it looks as if with no effort!

Room Tip: All rooms are on the river and are completely private.

Kings Pool camp is the "premier" camp in Wilderness' Savuti-Linyanti concession, catering to the traveller who wants that little bit more luxury in the bush.

The rooms here are significantly bigger than in Savuti camp and Duma Tau, which is not to say that rooms in the other two camps were small. The rooms have a plunge pool, an outside day bed and a fully stocked mini-bar. Dinner is a la carte, with the menu changing daily.

I had some excellent sightings here, with the rare wild dogs making a special guest appearance. A leopard with her one-year old cub playing for our amusement.

The staff are particularly friendly.

We did an incredible amount of research into the selection of our honeymoon destination. The only mistake we made was not staying a few more days at Kings Pool. The service, food, setting, guides, animals seen, room comfort & attention to detail is exactly as it should be for this level of travel. The only bit of advice you must take with you is tightly wrap a belt around your tent's door handle before going to bed at night as they have no locks & the baboons will come & try to open them. It happened to us!!
