“Lovely stop and lovely people”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2013 via mobile

Stopped for lunch and (a fairly long, enjoyable) coffee. Food was excellent in the lounge on big soft comfy settees, watching the canal activities across the road. ...could have sat there all day. Staff are superb and very kind. Will never drive past this spot again now I know about the Cairnbaan.

This is half the price of the Hotel at the other end of the canal and quite as nice. A lot of the rooms are very nice and overlook the canal as does the restaurant albeit a bit lower down so it is quite easy to loose time just enjoying the activity.
I ate dinner which was very good and then breakfast was well cooked with a quality feel about it. I enjoyed the whole place and would certainly head for here again.

Whilst travelling on the Crinan canal we stopped here for a meal. We had been before and had reasonable food.
However this occasion was disappointing.
The bar is always comfortable and interesting to sit in and we arrived early sitting at a table at the back. It was set for 6 and we were only 2 but thought nothing of it , it was midweek.
The starters were good.
But we then had cheese soufflé as a main which had obviously just come out of microwave, it took at least 15 mins for it to cool down . It was surrounded by melted cheese and grease and was very unpleasant.
The other main was breaded fish , looked and tasted as if standard frozen fish.
Throughout the time we were eating the bar was filling up, and as people came in the barmaid/manager was telling people to sit anywhere but obviously not on a big table as they were for larger groups. We felt so uncomfortable we moved!!!!
This is the only restaurant on the crinan canal which is a shame, if possible eat on board boat!

Spent the night here, two single rooms that were both very spacious with large bathrooms. Each room had its own individual style and was good value, considering the single occupancy. No broom cupboard under the stairs here! The whole hotel is well used and its furnishings and finish reflect this but in a homely, country setting way, so for me quite acceptable given the tariff. Have visited this hotel for lunch a couple of times over the last two years, eaten in its always busy bar and had good pub grub using local produce. This time had a very pleasant meal in the restaurant which is bright and airy. Breakfast was equally enjoyable. The location by the Crinan Canal is lovely, very peaceful and relaxing spot. Would recommend this hotel as a pleasant stop in stunning Argyle.

Stayed here on Saturday night for one night only, wish it was more. The hotel benefits from a great location with miles of canal walks all the way to Crinan. The hotel staff are all very friendly and provide great speedy service.
As it was a beautiful day we sat outside on the terrace and had lunch which was delicious. We had room 2 which was on the ground floor and was spacious and clean.

The hotel is a good 3* hotel and doesn't claim to be anything more however the evening meals served in the conservatory / restaurant were again of a very high standard and the decor in the restaurant was very modern and clean, the manger is attentive to the guests requirements.
I also have to say that the beds were probably the comfiest we have ever slept in, for a hotel.
All in all I would say this is worth a 3.5* / 3.75* rating.

Nothing is ever perfect so here is our only minor gripe.

Cooked breakfast (X2) Both portions of Haggis were tasty enough but very very soggy. My wife's fried egg was very undercooked and it put her off eating the rest of her breakfast. The bacon although tasty enough was very dry and a bit crispy for us. These things may just be down to our own personal taste but I did see in the guest book that the smoked haddock and kippers got good reviews from other guests.

Would we stay here again ? Yes most definitely.

Room Tip: I think the rooms on the first floor must have a great view of the canal, locks and boats.

This really is one of our favourite hotels. We have stayed there a number of times and it resembles a very comfortable armchair. It may not be ultra modern, but the rooms are clean and more than adequate.
The welcome is always friendly whether old or new clients, the food has never disappointed, and the breakfasts exceptional.
Just ended another delightful stay, and looking forward to our next visit.

I stayed here with my dad and my dog for two nights; I booked online and got the last room, small attic twin. It was bigger than I thought and was perfect for us (although my dad found the four flights of stairs a bit tough!) The food in the restaurant was good and the bar had a friendly buzz. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. I recommend it, especially the home baked biscuits in our room!
