“A country museum with everything for adults and families”

I visit castles and gardens in the west of Scotland, but Kilmartin beats them all. On my recent visit, as so often, it was to be wet in the middle of the day. So we started by driving around some of the standing stones, sculptured stones and circles, by which time the family, well exercised, enjoyed the museum (and particularly the lunch) all the more. Then, in the brighter afternoon, we walked and sheltered from showers around the cairns, which can be seen from the restaurant windows. The museum and the outdoor adventures grow on us all on every visit.

“Magical spot”

Kilmartin House Museum has three elements, a museum that interprets the landscape and history of the local area, scores of neolithic cairns, standing stones and prehistoric rock art sites and a lovely cafe and restaurant.

It is a great way to spend two or three hours, visit the museum, walk down the glen and then enjoy the home made baking and lunches. On a Thursday, Friday and Saturday the restaurant transforms into a fine dining establishment. It has a limited, but interesting menu that uses local supplies where possible. The portions are on the large side.
