“Like a boutique resort, Cassia pleases on all fronts”
Reviewed 1 November 2012

We stayed for 5 nights at Cassia cottages and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this very special place.

The grounds and features of the resort are very well designed and maintained.

The normal sized cottages are arranged perpendicular to the beach. We were lucky to get the cottage that was the 2nd closest to the beach. From our balcony, we had a view of beach/sunset, pool and reception area. I think our cottage was 4B?

Here's a list of the features (indicated with ++ signs if we liked)

+lush grounds
+nice decor, vibe and ambience
+++staff engagement and friendliness
+beds
+room layout and features, including good storage
+room safe
+kettle with tea and coffee
+efficient air con + an oscillating fan as well
+mosquito net arranged every evening (although we didn't see a need)
+bathroom water temperature and pressure
+sound proofness
+our great balcony, which included a clothes drying rack and yet another oscillating ceiling fan
+2 different seating areas, 2 chairs inside the room and one paded bench on our balcony
+cleanliness
+two pools with lots of comfy lounge chairs
+lounge chairs in quiet shaded locations around the resort to sneak off and read
+lounge with 2 computers and a library with books and games
+special outdoor tented spa area for massages, etc..
+excellent fresh food - breakfast and dinner were excellent
+resort has its own fleet of well maintained motorcycles

To improve
- For the paded bench on the balcony, replace the foam pad with a thicker comfier one
- Improve the selection and quality of the motorcycle helmets

Other
> Every morning at breakfast one of the managers (she was fluent in French, English and Vietnamese) would go from table to table to check on the guests and chat if you wanted to. In general, the level of staff engagement at this resort was the best I've seen at any hotel or resort in Vietnam we've been to.
> I agree with other reviewers about the quality and freshness of the food. I particularly liked the bar-b-q chicken skewers.
> I had a 60 minute Thai massage on two occasions and they were both excellent.

Conclusion:
Cassia cottages is the perfect sized small boutique resort. Small enough to feel intimate and special. Treat yourself!!

Room Tip: We loved our cottage that was close to the beach (I think it was 4B)

Hello, Death Racer! You've written 120 others for Trip Advisor. So, we appreciate your noticing our concern for detail. Our staff support and understands what we're doing. A note- we have not changed management as another reviewer said, but we do rotate, as do most professional hotels. We built Cassia Cottage in 1999 and have been there since and most staff have been there since 2005 when we opened to the public.
Your two suggestions for improvement will be taken right away. If we can find large size motorcycle helmets in Saigon.
We really do appreciate the feedback, the affirmation and the visit. Hope to see you again.

We were a bit concerned upon our arrival in Phu Quoc -- the island is a work in progress and the muddy, bumpy drive from the pier made us wonder what mess we'd gotten ourselves into (arrange transportation from the pier in advance!). We were quickly relieved after checking into Cassia Cottage: secluded gardens, spacious and well-designed rooms, delicious restaurant (crowded each night), friendly, English-speaking staff who were sincere as they greeted us each day, and beautiful beach frontage offering some of the most striking sunsets we'd ever seen.

One day we rented motorbikes (approx $10/day) from the front desk, grabbed a map then set off on a a self-guided, white-knuckle adventure of the island that won't soon be forgotten. The seaside fishing villages are unjaded by camera-toting tourists and the "backroads" offer a glimpse of every day Vietnam. (Skip the waterfall; don't miss the cemetery.)

Yes, there is much work to do on developing the physical and tourist infrastructure of the island (especially the roads) for Phu Quoc to become an international destination, but Cassia Cottage is already there -- anticipating and meeting the needs of a discriminating traveler.

In the end, "rough around the edges" was Phu Quoc's charm. Better to visit Phu Quoc now before it becomes just another Phuket or Samui.

We arrived at cassia after we were advised to upgrade to a better resort for the last few days of our visit to phu quoc island. We arrived to find an ok looking resort with a nice pool (not an infinity pool as described on the web site!!) with nice clean rooms but the main let down was the fact that this hotels main restaurant was closed :-(. We sat down for food the first night expecting some really nice food but what we had was average at best. We had not finished our starters when we were given our mains at the same time......just plonked on the table??? Breakfast is also pretty poor The best thing about this place is the staff.....I believe this place is now under new management so hopefully it will get better. That said if I was to return to the island I would go straight back to mango bay (our first hotel)....cheaper and better by miles......I even asked if they had any jobs so I could stay there lol

This place is just not worth the money when you can get far batter elsewhere on the island........I just wish we stayed at mango bay for the whole duration!

Well, Gosh. It must have been the wrong choice for you, indeed. If we'd known you were unhappy, we'd have refunded your deposit!
We have two pools. One of them IS an infinity pool- though it stops at the end... so actually, infinite is more like- the ocean? Love for our children? So you're right. Excuse us for misrepresenting “No visible edge" as infinity.
Our main restaurant is outdoors and it was raining while you were there, so meals are served under the roof. If the service was insensitive we apologize. Hmmm. if the main course out too early, we will work on it.
Closing, we're sorry you didn't like us. but since the hotel you switched to is the same price and has no aircons or pool, or outdoor food service...outdoor bathrooms, we do feel badly but will let you be the one guest who didn't love us the past months.

We stayed here at the end of our honeymoon and it was a perfect place to relax after our whirlwind trip of Vietnam.

We paid extra for a room with a sea and pool view which was nice. The room was spacious and comfortable.

We ate in the hotel on a few nights which was always nice and breakfast is good too with a good choice. Try the local fish dish, its amazing! They have happy hour each afternoon when guests get a free cocktail which was nice.

The beach is beautiful...we walked along past other resorts however the beach is nicest at Cassia.

Spa treatments are nice however they got mine and my husbands treatment mixed up which was slightly disappointing. We did mention this when checking out however nothing much was said.

Apart from this, the service was exceptional...the staff are so friendly and everyone always had a smile on their face.

We have thought long and hard where we would like to stay if when we ever visit Phu Quoc Island and our choices has always been between La Veranda and The Cassia Cottage, both have very good reviews in tripadvisor  and different blogs we have come across.

At the end, we went ahead with The Cassia Cottage due also to it is half the price of the amount we were quoted at La Veranda, still quite pricey but we were told this is a shoulder- high season.

The communication from the time of enquiry - to making special requests - to finally making a booking was very smooth.  Amelie the manager was very attentive to detail.

It was timing to our son's birthday and Amelie offered to set up the room with balloons and a cake for a small fee of $15USD. The cake she ordered for us was very delicious and the reaction of our sons face was priceless.  Amelie and staff's truly extended their Phu Quoc hospitality to us.

We were told upon booking,  that our room ( we booked the beach house with the ocean view- BH 1) will not be ready but they accommodated us in another room while we waited for our room to get set up. The staff upon checked-in took time to personally show us around the resort.

Our beach house has a spacious verandah that overlooks the ocean with coconut trees around and a very beautiful yet simple garden below. From the verandah you would see very beautiful sunsets. On the right of our beach house is the pool. So this room have both worlds. This have 2 rooms both have toilet/ showers. Living Room is huge as well- it was definitely like being at home. We are a family of 5 with children ages 12 and under.

The happy hour is from 4-5pm and the cocktail drinks for adults and sweet drinks for the kids are delivered in each room. That is a special touch.

The staff's also go to each room to set up each poster bed for the night putting mosquito nets- ( kids loved the look)

Breakfast is very simple. You will find what you need but not extensive choices . So if you are a huge breakfast person, this is not the resort for you.

The hotel, plants their own produce for their restaurant ,  so you'll know the ingredients will always be fresh. The staffs we have spoken to are all hospitality interns or newly graduate from local and international universities.  They all speak English and they truly extend warm personal hospitality.

The hotel is "tv free" . None of the rooms have tv or video's . Their idea is to help families and friends to bond together. No phones in the room either so you need to go to reception if you need something although there are continuous staff floating around for your needs.

You can watch a movie at 9pm's for free at the common room for free of your choice.

The restaurant chef in the duration of our stay delivered wonderful tasty home cooked meals-

What more could we ask Recommendations:
1. To upgrade couch cover as its run down, looks worn out and a bit itchy.
2.To change bottle/ can opener as it has degraded and full of rust.

I am happy to recommend this resort to anyone- whether for couples or for families . Oh by the way, for those who wants peace and quiet, adults have their own swimming pool also.  The other is for families with children.

We recently stayed at Cassia Cottages; its a clean friendly place with lovely gardens and views out across the ocean. We stayed in room 1B which was very large, nice decor and good position. The staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble.

Had a marvelous stay at Cassia. The cottages are clean, spacious and comfortable. The staff work very hard to keep grounds and private beach clean and the pools are pristine. Bonus having an "adults only" pool. Food is excellent and reasonably priced and the complimentary breaksfast had option of traditional vietnamese or western food - excellent choices including smoothie, eggs any style. We found staff very helpful re excursions and you can rent motor bikes on site - highly recommend renting (inexpensive) and doing south tour day one and north the next. Little traffic out of town so a great way to get comfortable on a scooter if you haven'd done it before. Easy to walk to town from Cassia as well if you feel like a bit of exercise (about 20-25 minutes). Would absolutely stay here again.

Room Tip: We had adjoining rooms with friends which worked well - close to pool
