We spent months researching different resorts throughout the Caribbean. We read all the reviews and felt that we knew what we were getting into. We were so pleased with our decision! We got more than we expected.
My first advice is to read all the reviews both good and bad. If bugs and the occasional bird, or lizard will ruin your vacation, than stay away!. If you need constant entertainment and nightlife, than stay away! If you need multiple restaurants that serve gourmet food 24 hours a day, than stay away! If you need marble floors and brass fixtures and purified air, then again, look somewhere else! If you want fantastic scenery, a simple and completely relaxing vacation, Friendly and helpful staff, than Cocobay should be on your short list!
Cottages - What you will get with Cocobay is simple accommodations that are rustic and comfortable. Wood floors, a few pieces of furniture and yes a rod to hang your clothes on. There were wide doors and windows that allow the breeze and nature sounds as well as a spectacular view to enter the room and take your breath away. We had a plunge pool and yes it was cool at night. Cool water, never once stopped us from jumping in and completely enjoy the feeling and view. We also had birds and cocloful Lizards that shared the porch of our cabin and sugar on occasion. We read a lot about the mosquitos. We came prepared with lots of bug spray. We did get bit a few times but nothing that stopped us from doing what we wanted. The bathrooms were different than expected. First, they were dated, but that added to the charm of the room. The main feature t this room was the large doors next to the shower that lead to the deck. Privacy was maintained by a wall of flowering vines that flanked the deck. There was no shower curtain so shower water sometime splashed on the floor, but with a view like that while showering, who could care! The only complaint that I had with the bathroom was that the outlet for the hair dryer was 7 foot off the ground. You had to climb to access it. There was AC in the room that we did use on a few nights and a great fan over the bed that kept the room comfortable. We also had a TV and computer terminal that was in the room for an additional charge, but never once used it. Rooms were cleaned and towels refreshed daily. There were around 50 cottages at this resort. All were separate and private. Some were close to each other, but vegetation kept it private. The walk to the dinning areas and pools was a pleasant but did go up and down hills. It was lit at night by walkway lights. If you have trouble walking, than you may need to request a closer cabin. There are several cottage types but all share a fantastic view!
Beaches and Pool - The beach at Cocobay was clearly a focal point. There were plenty of lounge chairs and thatched umbrellas. There were palm trees to find shade and also the crystal clear water of the Caribbean. The beaches were raked and cleaned daily and there was a drink service for those that didn’t want to hike back and forth to the bar. While we were there, they had begun construction of a new pool and beachside bar. I can’t wait to see it in person. We have seen the pictures and it looks spectacular! The beach is a public beach and has locals and vendors that come around. We were not bothered by them. A simple no thank you was enough to keep the moving. We did wind up making friends with some and feel that they actually added to our experiences.
Food and entertainment – Cocobay has one dining room that is all outside and covered. There is no formal indoor areas which suited us just fine. Breakfast was a buffet and had a wonderful omelet station. Lunch and dinner was menu driven with only a few choices. There were always several different selections. We don’t like seafood and had no problems finding something to our liking. Quality was good but not great. Reservations for dinner were made in the morning but seating never seemed a problem. Dining room closed around 10, so if you wanted a midnight snack, you were out of luck. The menu could have had some local specialty dishes. That would have been nice. There is a second restaurant on the property that is not included in the all-inclusive. This is Sheer rocks. We did have a great meal there one night of our stay. We would recommend that you try it while you are there! The bar was small and located just outside the dining area. Drinks were fantastic and free. We spent the entire time trying the local specials and did not miss the top shelf drinks that we were used to. Entertainment was a small band twice during the week that also ended around ten. The bar closes when the customers are gone or around ten. This was not a problem for us since we were always getting up to watch the spectacular sunrise and were eager to start our day early. It seems like we were not alone. I didn’t hear one complaint about the early close while we were there.
Staff – Cocobay is a small resort and has the ability to have extremely personal service. We had no major complaints for them to solve and asked very little of them. They knew us by name and were always eager to help. They went out of their way to make us feel special. Most of the staff that we met and talked with have worked for Cocobay for years and were very happy there. This made us feel comfortable. Even the locals that worked at the beaches added to our enjoyment of this resort. The one thing that we didn’t expect was that while we were there, we met some fantastic people that we will keep in touch with for a long time. It was hard to leave as everyone was so nice!
Overall – Antigua is a beautiful and peaceful Island. There is limited entertainment and unlimited beauty. This is one of the things that pulled us to the Island. Cocobay is for those that want to relax and truly unwind. You can easily book excursions off the property or just relax by the pool or beach. This is not a place for all night parties or round the clock dinning. Nor is this a 5 star gold plated resort with butler service. It is a place of beauty and relaxing and meeting similar people. It is rustic and charming and a perfect place to unwind. We hope to return someday soon.
