“Can the Micro Minority be Right?”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

Just back from five wonderful and relaxing days in Antigua - at Cocobay. I had booked it back in June and as launch time approached, reviewed Trip Advisor for a refresh. Guarding against the worst I looked to the worst reviews and even though just 3 or 4 percent of a large total of reviewers were nasty, a touch of paranoid worry crept in (I've also never done an all inclusive). Luckily, my worries and the negative reviewers were WAY off. The setting and views are not easily rivalled in the Caribbean or anywhere . . .Perivolas pool view on Santorini did come to mind from one of the (plural) plunge pools .. .including our room's. The water color and ease of access to three beaches was ridiculous. General Manager O'Neal's staff was as friendly and accommodating as a pre-Medicare soul could hope for. The accommodations are very nice, private and comfortable . . . .not top tier luxury but a heck of a value for the price. The food and beverage offerings were good to very good. ... even for an all inclusive newbie wannabe food snob. A special dinner beachside can also be arranged for just a slight opening of the wallet. Decent low end and high end offerings are nearby for a change of pace. Car rental and activities to explore the island and its offerings are easily worked by the staff. This was a great 5 day stay . . . .bugs and hurricanes in the Caribbean are facts of life . .. . .we experienced only a few of the former . .. but they were as bothersome as a few negative reviews. Cocobay was great and I highly recommend it.

Two days en-route good good great location excellent staff and a super resort manager. Small rather tired rooms - get room near reception facing the sea. Fabulous sandy beach and two well maintained infinity pools.

I stayed at Cocobay over Christmas and New Year 2013 with my family.

The rooms were always clean, with plenty of room. The only downside was the lack of drawers!

The staff were so friendly and couldn't do more for you.
The food was lovely, especially breakfast where there was always a great selection.

Definitely recommend!

We've been to the resort in mid-December. Everything was lovely, except for mosquitoes and sand flies. Probably because there is a some kind of a standing water reservoir nearby, which attracts insects.

The resort tries to eliminate this problem by fumigating at night, maybe it would be even worse without it. We all were covered in bites, and I saw other guests talking about this.

Food, rooms, beach, view - all is lovely.

We first visited this resort in December 2012 and we don't tend to travel to the same place twice so the fact we have just returned from our second trip in two years should tell you all you need to know.

When we search for a Holiday we look for a small quiet resort, with stunning views, turquoise waters, lovely beaches, adult’s only and Al La Carte dining and this place has the lot. We did compare with several other resorts across the Caribbean but you can’t beat Cocobay for the Value For Money factor.

We stayed in N1, a room at the very top of the resort with stunning views. It is so popular with return guests that on our first night we met 11 couples who were there at the same time the previous year and the standard of the food, the resort and the staff had not changed one bit and was still excellent.

The rooms are fine, they are basic but rustic but this is in-keeping with the surroundings. If you want more luxury you can find it but it will come at a cost and having visited Antigua three times I genuinely believe this resort has the best location on the island and having also visited several islands, we are yet to find a better location in the whole of the Caribbean. If the rooms were more luxurious I honestly believe the place would become unaffordable as the location really is second to none.

My only minor gripe is the Thursday buffet night. It’s the one night a week they do a buffet so can’t complain too much but it really isn’t very good compared to the usual standard of the 6 remaining nights of the week. This year was worse than the previous year as they ran out of food (we didn’t dine particularly late), some of it was cold and the deserts weren’t the best – but this is a minor gripe and certainly not enough to spoil things. We also didn’t get some of the “perks/gestures” other repeat guests got but this didn’t really bother us at all, it was just a bit odd!

So, all in all, we really do love this place. We are searching for 2014 destinations and it’s so easy and tempting to choose Cocobay as it does tick so many boxes. However, we are determined to try somewhere different this year but Cocobay will be the benchmark.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view.

My husband and I and another couple just returned from a beautiful, relaxing stay at cocobay. This is our 3rd trip to Antigua and the first time to cocobay. The location is gorgeous and the color of the water surrounding the resort is magnificent. They also face west, so you get the beautiful sunsets. The staff is friendly and helpful and made our stay delightful. A bottle of champagne awaits you upon arrival and we received a delightful container of delicious rum punch and a tin of toasted coconut in our room on our last night. The dining arrangement is buffet breakfast and lunch and a la carte dinners. We enjoyed the food, and always found something on the menu to tempt us. Because we booked our stay using the toll free number provided on the web site, we did not experience any additional charges for lobster, steak or shrimp on the dinner menu. This was our experience, I'm not sure if it is always the case. We mostly lounged on the beach or poolside reading or relaxing, but we did take the medicine man nature walk which is not to be missed. I also took a yoga class with Samantha on Wednesday morning which was delightful. I believe they also offer a Tuesday morning fitness class. There was entertainment 5 of the 7 nights we were there. The clientele was mostly British and American honeymooners and couples, it's a very romantic place and I can see why honeymooners would love it there, but it's appropriate for adults of all ages. Being such a small hotel, only 53 rooms, it's easy to strike up a conversation with the other guests at the bar or at tea time, or again after dinner at the bar. If you are looking for relaxation, interesting people, beautiful beaches and pools, tasty food, lovely grounds and rooms and friendly staff...cocobay will not disappoint!

Our trip was our first and we wondered what it would be like after reading some reviews but it was beautiful
The little cottages were neat and basic and I felt a little dark in decor but the bathroom was lovely and bright and showering with the doors open to the view was at first a little strange but I got to love it.
The wooden floors are almost black varnished which I felt was too dark and depressing but as we were not in there long was ok but natural wood floors would look so much nicer.
The absolute pleasure of staying in them was the bed .. A kingsize climb up into it bed with a memory foam mattress that was heaven and with the mozzie net covering it looked like a princess bed and in the morning when you woke you laid in such comfort looking out over the view of the beach you didn't want to get up !
Every drink I had was lovely and I got hooked on piña coladas ... The meals were wonderful with only two I had a problem with but that didn't detract from the rest.
We never went short of drink or food and skipped afternoon tea as we didn't need it.
The one little gift shop is great and wonderful happy ladies in it.
The beach is nice but I found the two other beaches beside it nicer and nobody on them a real paradise.
We would love to return one day to this little gem.
Also take the Pelican trip around the island tour with either Alvin ( as we did. ) or Almond. It was worth every penny and well narrated. A must.
