“Nice but........”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2006

As part of our honeymoon we stayed at the cocobay resort for 6 days.

The pool (which looks really nice) was closed for the first three days but we got to use the pool in an other resort what was a nice gesture.

On the beach there were not many beds and we were in the low season. They have a new Hobycat catemaran which is nice to use.

Meals were good but we didn´t like the birds who had breakfast with us.

The room was basic but OK, it was the rainy season so didn´t mis the airconditioning. We had a sea view room and the view is great.

Overall there are better resorts in Antigua but valuewise it wasn´t bad at all. I would recomend to rent a car for a few days, saves you expensive taxi rides and you can go where ever you want to go.

Bring change to the hotel, I had to pay way to much to a taxidriver because the hotel couldn´t provide me with change.

We arrived to a very warm welcome but on arriving at our cottage we were very disapointed the cottages are very basic there is no where to sit only on the bed or out on the terrace. There are are flies and birds everywhere in the bar and resturant which could be prevented by management, We were bitten everyday the mosqito are ripe. The resturant was a la carte which needs improving desperatly, the buffet meals accomadate you more with more choice and there is more food.Staff friendly especially David the bar attendent. No drink service on the beach which is offered in brochure.
Pool and sea views are amazing.Take a trip on the virgin ahoy its a wonderful day out.
Mosqitos are ripe which spoils your holiday.
Would i ever go back to Cocobay the answer to that is no even if it was offered free.

We have just got back from a short stay at the Cocobay and had a great time. The rooms are rustic, but functional, the view from our seafront room was fantastic and we never drew the curtains, as nobody was going to see in and we wanted to enjoy the panorama. The food and service in the restaurant were great. True the breakfast and lunch services are both buffet, but I'd rather that and then get back to the beach. The evening meals were mostly a la carte and were very good. The service was friendly and helpful.

Reception was quick, easy and we were in our room within 15 minutes of getting out of the taxi.

The bar was great and drinks were plentiful and strong!

The beaches surrounding the hotel are breathtaking, although at the weekend there are quite a few locals who use it, but that is to be expected with all beaches being open to the public. We walked to Ffryes beach every day and had the beach to ourselves.

The only really major downside is the sandflies and few mosquitos. I took 98% deet with me from the US, and even using this religiously throughout the day and evening I still ended up with over 30 bites, which have been extremely itchy. I saw one poor lady who only had 15% deet who was suffering terribly. My husband, who hardly ever gets bitten, also got raided by the sandflies. I have been to Antigua twice before and have never been bitten like this.

So overall, you will have a lovely time if you come here, as long as you can handle the bugs.

  • Liked — The views from our room and the beaches
  • Disliked — There really wasn't anything to dislike, apart from the sandflies
  • Tips/Secrets — anything to ward off the flies

To start, I feel it's important to rate Cocobay based on the fee that we paid. I purchased a last minute deal at a low rate and adjusted my expectations to match it. We were not looking for luxury, just a pretty beach in a child free environment. We started with a great first impression. Friendly front desk, beautiful grounds, nicely maintained public areas and the cottages are simple but exactly what we expected. The main downside is that contrary to their advertising is that the beach is public, not private. Our very first morning on the beach, pickup trucks (and I am not exaggerating) full of locals arrived on the beach for some type of family gathering. They came complete with bbq's, tables, LOUD music and dozens of screaming kids. The beach was taken over along with the beach chairs. Management said that it was beyond their control. Apparently, all beaches in Antigua are public. The key is to stay at a resort where the beach is only accessed thru the resorts private road (like Galley Bay) or by water. Along with the locals came the vendors. We were approached again and again and again.

Beyond the beach, we felt the food was okay but, breakfast and lunch was a buffet and it was covered with flies. Not very appetizing. Dinner sounded great and was in a beautiful setting, unfortunately the menu was just beyond the capability of the kitchen staff.

Our cottage was cute, but the bed was rock hard and didn't have a phone or clock. Also, we needed the patio doors open at night and they were not screened. Even with deet we had tons of bug bites. Also, after a few minutes in the shower it overflowed and flooded the bathroom.

We gave it two nights and then moved to a different resort.

I'm not going to go on and on. This resort simply doesn't live up to it's advertising. If you are young and just want a cheap place to party this is a great place.

We got back from the coco bay on Thursday 5th October we stayed here for 11 nights. We flew with Virgin Atlantic and I have to say they were fantastic, we had upgraded our seats and this was something we would do again.

When we arrived in resort my immediate reaction was fine nice staff and cabin / room as advertised. brochure does state no airconditioning and you think this will be okay it was not we hardly slept the heat was high and the fans simply were not good enough.

some issues that did bother me straight away 1st was that the reception set a $50 per day money change but whenever I tried to change money they never had any and so we had to take a $20 taxi ride to Jolly Harbour for money changing we had to go to Jolly Harbour 4 times. The second thing that bothered me straight away was that the "Shears" restraunt was closed, we were celebrating two birthdays whilst there and had looked forward to using this restraunt.

These problems aside we settled in for a good holiday (we could have possibly been the rowdy crowd the poster before us mentioned) we met some great people and we played water polo dialy and generally had an enjoyable time.

The real problem was the bites that virtually everybody but especially the women were subjected too. My wife had around 200 bites in a 11 night period, we used the mosquito net every night but clearly the bites were not form the rooms they were from the public areas, and despite every cream, tablet or spray available in the nearby pharmacy the bites just continued to get worse (two of our friends me made during this trip left their holiday two days early as the bites were so bad) We had all travelled extensively to the caribean and other destinations but this was the worst any of us had experienced with regard to the bites.

the Staff here are extremley good and they are all very friendly. The restraunt service does however let them down some evenings we waited nearly 2 hours for our main courses the restraunt was sadly uderstaffed and o the guys who were serving were under constant pressure and it was not fair on them. The food for breakfast and lunch was excellent, the evening meals were very high class but sadly never filling and slightly specialised, sometimes you felt they were a bit over extravagent and could not service the guest quickly enough despite being their low season. We did suggest to Oniel the manager that although the waiter service is great it could be an idea just to simplify things with a buffet.

In the restraunt during the daytime particuarly breakfast time the flies and the birds are a nuisance, it sounds romantic birds tweeting around you as your eating your breakfast but believe me they are a pain, and the flies made leaving a roll or drink to the side for later during your meal an impossibility.

I have used trip advisor several times after holidays and always I am honest on every occasion until now it has always been 5 stars and this is sadly the first time I have had cause to voice my concerns, I like to think I am not a typical British whinger (I was a holiday rep for 2 and a half years and hate holiday whingers) but this establishment although beautiful does come with problems.

We did the Eli Extreme trip on his speed boat this was exceptional, JD, Dave & Lesley were great company and good guides for the day. this trip cost $170 per person which is quite expensive but was deffinately worth every penny.

We hired a jeep wrangler for 2 days from reception this came to a total cost of $200 inc insurance and temporary Antiguan driving license this again was totally worth it, the experience of the Antiguan roads was great, they have no road signs their roads are awful and the map useless but it was a awesome experience and the locals even in some of the most deprived areas were all extremely friendly and always happy to get you back onto the correct road.

All in all the holidya was good and I am sure when the bites go down our memory bank will only remeber the great times we had but I honestly think that was down to the friends we met there, thanks to Julie & John Mel & Sarah Marcello & Tara Pete & Brigette Luke & Laura Jason & Sandra plus many other people we met there you made our holiday bearable Thank You

my wife and i thought we would try cocobay this year. we normally stay at cocos ,but virgin holidays do not use that hotel anymore. first impression very nice , cottages set out nice , ample bar space ( behind ) ,and the resturant greatly placed . arrived by virgin atlantic just after 13.00 hrs . the airport was quiet , so no hassle there . checked in at cocobay , we changed and had a look around. stopped of at the bar for a nice glass of wadadli beer ( mmm very smooth ) . and then they started ........ the horrid SAND FLIES . we both used 100% deet , but that did not deter them . we got bit any time of the day , we tried everything and they still munched on you . this was the forth time we had travelled to antigua , and i have never witnesed so many bites ! . people say its the mozzies WRONG . perhaps if the hotel smoked the trees and fauna perhaps it would not be so bad. watch out for the flies ( ordinary ones ) at breakfast and lunch they are very persistant when you get your food .
the food on the whole was fautless , hospitality from the staff was second to none, rooms very clean .

if you are looking for a trip go on the excellence boat , the crew are fantastic and well worth the money ( virgins ahoy ) .

lastly while we where there , some of the guest got a bit rowdy and LOUD , thank god they flew back on there BMI flight to manchester , one guy was talking on his mobile by the pool , no need to use it they must of heard him from the island to the uk very clear ! .

well on the whole if you took the few hiccups out of it , i would give it 8/10 .

Stayed at Coco Bay first two weeks in July 06, and fell in love with the place!
We like many others read reviews and have to say they were a pretty mixed bag, we wanted something different, this year instead of your normal high rise concrete block types of Hotel, and we not dissapointed with Coco Bay.
Accomodation, is simple but quaint, the cottages are charming, the views are to die for, who can complain about waking up opening those french doors and looking out to sea, from your bed!!! they were always clean, the maids were excellent and very friendly. Cottages which look out to the sea have better views than the ones which look over the lagoon, so go for a seaview its worth the extra.
Reception Staff were are always polite and helpful, they did change travellers cheques for us but there is a small limit of about 50$ so dont expect to be able to change large amounts at any one time.

Food was great, we went in July so the Sheer Restaurant was closed but it didnt matter, there was always plenty of choice, and water, wine etc was topped up before we even asked.
Booking for dinner wasnt a problem just put our name down when we went for breakfast ..easy.

Entertainment is low key, steel band, great guy sounded just like Nat King Cole sang through dinner one night and Calypso Joe and sidekick were great fun!!, to be honest this added to the charm for us, people tended to mix more and chat to each other we met some really nice people.
Be prepared for insects I normally get bitten like mad, but after reading reviews, went armed ready to be eaten alive, but only got bitten twice which is less than any other time ive been on holiday, wear replellant, close your doors at dusk, etc and just a tip I took Vitamin B for 6 weeks prior and while I was there really made a difference.

Dave was the star of the show for us,...what a brilliant barman!! discovers what you like and then goes out of his way to keep you happy, works like a trojan mixing cocktails by the dozen, we were never kept waiting for a drink,

Shirley Heights is great, we did the helicopter tour to Montserrat its expensive but what an experience! St Johns for the duty free.

Weather was good ...got to expect some showers at this time of year, they soon came and went.

Great beaches, and there are plenty to go at, Stunning sunsets relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, good food all in all a wonderful holiday, cant wait to go back next year for our silver wedding.
