“Great Tasty Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2012

Twice lately I had occasion to stop into The Rising Sun in Mullinavat on my way home from family funerals in Waterford. First time round, I wasn't excited at the prospect of noshing up in in a pub, however we found locals ranging from bachelor farmers, the parish priest, journeyman salesmen and travelers all turning in here for a relaxing and very satisfying mid-day meal. There's nothing pretentious about the food at The Rising Sun in Mullinavat. The menu is traditional, perfectly prepared and served with a smile at a price that won't break the bank.

Easy To Find

Peel off the M9 at Junction 11 for Mullinavat and The Rising Sun is the first thing you meet when you hit the village. The spacious car park is to the side of the premises with disabled car parking close to the door. Fed and foddered, you can roll back onto the motorway and journey on. Couldn't be more ideal.

Great Tasty Food

The menu is country food, cooked very well and served in man sized, but not grotesque portions. This restaurant is more of an eating house with beer than an outright pub. First time there, I had the liver served with a tasty pepper sauce and lovely vegetables, I seem to remember. Second time, both of us had fresh battered and deep fried plaice cooked to order accompanied by beautifully cooked turnip and carrot, simply prepared but perfect.

The fresh, hot apple crumble with cinnamon, served with custard and cream is what the doctor ordered, however. Fresh custard is such a rare commodity these days. Whoever the cook is makes no pretensions at educating the Irish palate; he simply takes what we like but does it perfectly. Who needs foreign food?

Services

The toilets were clean and functioning, showing signs of being well serviced. Members of the establishment elite and ladies won't be disappointed.

Prices

Our bill for two good, tasty main courses, one desert and a glass of wine was €27 odd. Not cheap but by no means excessive. When you consider that the food was beautiful with friendly service and the fact that we were very satisfied and "foddered", the price was very good. We would certainly have paid more had we waited until we got to Kilkenny to eat.

Mullinavat happened to be where my husband said "I've had enough driving for the day..." We were trying to avoid cities, so this little town without all the tourists suited us fine. The hotel was very quiet, with few people staying at that time. I could imagine it may be noisy on weekends, especially in the rooms that overlook the hotel car park. Our room was very clean and spacious and the bed comfortable. The staff and locals in the bar were friendly. One older fellow was fascinated with my laptop (internet was not available in our room) and set a challenge for me to find the sites of various attractions - he was delighted! We ate in the small bar - food was fine. Breakfast the next morning was not served until 9. It was good, and the brown bread was excellent.

The Rising Sun, Mullinavat in Kilkenny is a place to experience. Its a very small guesthouse with 5 or 6 rooms in a small village. A very hospitable reception and a good bar at downstairs fully buily on rocks, it gives an amazing feeling. The rooms are spic and span in cleanliness, with each and every cornet taken care off. Since its staffed minimally you get a key for the room and also the entrance of the guest house from behind. In the event you return late you enter the guest house yourself. Mullinavat village also has some amazing houses. People who drive down in the area must stay back at the rising sun. One word of caution is that if you are travelling by train, you should not get down at Kilkanney station, but at Waterford and drive back to Mullinavat

Room Tip: Though Mullinavat is in Kilkanney, you should not get down at Kilkanney station if you want to visit...

I stayed at the Rising Sun for a night only, on the route from Dublin to Kilkenny.
The place is really nice and comfortable, and the rooms are large, bright and absolutely clean.
The price is also absolutely good.
Mullinavat is a very little village cut by the road going to Kilkenny, without any shop or attractions. Maybe it's even a too quite place! I remember I went to sleep at 9 o'clock...
Anyway, the Rising Sun is definitely a nice place and if you're looking for a solution in this area I can suggest it.

Checked in and paid for 2 rooms, these were clean and tidy. Went down for food, Grill for the men Bacon and cabbage for the ladies. I should perhaps of stated rare for the cooking of mine but the bacon and cabbage was apparently good. The price wasn't bad either. The Bar area is small and luckily it was a quiet night or we would have stayed at the dining tables. Breakfasts were good and they had the rugby on the TV, (maybe they should have just had this on one not both?).

Would I stay there again? Yes. Would I eat there again? Maybe.

Room Tip: We had rooms 10 & 11 only thing was a minor ticking noise constant from outside didn't bothe...

Stayed in this B&B for 1 night the rooms were not to bad we had a meal in the resturant and I must say the meal was excellent , unfortunately the stay did not match the good food.
We knew it was above a pub but we were also knew the rooms were not over the pub what we did not know was our room was above a function room which had an event on that night the manager told us about this when we booked in but told us it would not be to loud wrong ,tried to watch TV but was unable to enjoy the music from below was to loud ,we did not get to sleep untill after 1 am which is not great if you have a days work in front of you . So I would advise you to check when booking if there is a function on in the place. Also please be aware breakfast is not served untill 8.30
