This is a “must-do” when you are on the North side of Iceland. Great boat, great equipment and great people.
The only “complaint” must be that we didn’t get any jumping whales, but we saw 5 whales and it was fantastic!

I’ve gone whale watching in Haiti, Alaska, puerto Madryn and find this icelandi c experience the best and most enjoyable. After whale watching - luckily we spotted and followed humpbacks, you’re invited to fish and after arriving you eat the catch.
Ended with a big, big smile.

We left with a tour from Dalvik, and we saw three whales, one up close (he was sleeping). No breeches or flukes, but a cool tail and lots of breathing whale nose! The ride itself was beautiful - we had nice weather so lots of bright beautiful views of mountains and the sea. I appreciated that the whale watching guide was mostly quiet - providing information about certain whales or how to fish, or why we were moving, but otherwise letting us all enjoy the sea air and sounds. The fishing was very fun, even though our group had an unusually difficult time of it, and the fresh fish barbecue was delicious.

They provide you with warm suits which was much appreciated. We did spot some whales. Besides this activity, we got to fish. They cleaned the fish on board and when we returned they grilled them. The fresh fish were tastyWe met some wonderful people on board the boat. The staff was friendly and professional. This was a fun experience.

When there are whales everyone is happy! And when we went, there were many whales. The tour guides know where the whales are, and they know people want to see whales. The reason I did not give 5 stars was that the whale tours web sites should give information about the fullness of each tour, so that people with flexibility can choose.

In choosing a boat tour there are 2 bays in the north that have whale watching. We chose the bay on route 82 (Dalvik and Hauganes) over route 85 (Husavik) because the bay is narrower and we believed the seas would be flatter, less sea sickness. We chose the date by the weather report, less wind, less sea sickness. We choose Dalvik because it said 15 min to the whales again less sea sickness. There was no sea sickness. calm waters, gentle ride.

The people at Artic Sea Tours told me that whales do not care about bad weather, and they breech about 1 in 10 trips. No breech on our trip. But many whales and tails. Got a great shot of a tail. They told us that the 9am and 3pm trips were had more people because of tour group bookings for them. We choose the 9am (their first tour) as the earlier in the morning the calmer the waters. We met the boat from Hauganes where the whales were. Both boat drivers respected each other and the whales and gave their sightseer great views of the whales. The boat from Hauganes had less people on it and it was a smaller boat.

We sat in the back of the boat, giving us lots of room as everyone was in the front. And we could easily move from port to starboard to see the whales.

When they stopped for fishing, they knew where the fish were and how to catch them. I am a horrible fisherman and I caught two. Could have caught many more, others on the boat who wanted to fish. It took maybe 2 minutes per fish when you got the hang of it. People on the boat showed us how. Then they put them on the BBQ – YUM!
