“A unique experience”

First I would like to say I like this place ... and second a warning .... this place has no elevator / lifts. So if you are carrying heavy luggage and check in after 10 PM then be prepared to pull them by the stairs to your room. Mine was on the 2nd floor.

I spent about a week at that place.... it a nice place and you feel a touch of history. However the place is quite isolated. The rooms are good but you can sometime hear the aeroplanes as the Koln airport seems to be in the back yard. If you love golf then don,t forget to pack your cubs as they have a really nice golf course. The food in general is good along with a good collection of wines. However the breakfast did not have a single variation in all the seven days. It was the same breakfast food every day.

Form the coffee table books at the reception I found out that probably Napoleon and Henry Ford once stayed at this place. So I also now the list of who's who :) . A lady called the Black Lady also once lived there.

The place has a lot of antique looking furniture and stuff filled in.

It also has a small church inside and in one of the days that I stayed there was a marriage. It was nice.

The view from my room is also quite nice and the beds are also terrific.... the four post beds of the by-gone era.

Only a fun caution about this place ..... as it really feels old and in the night it really becomes quite then you sometimes feel it's a bit mysterious .........

Room Tip: Choose a room that has the antique feel. I stayed at room no 31 ... which was nice.

Found this hotel on Expedia.com and it was a great deal. Close enough to Cologne by car yet it sits out in the country and there is a good back road to get there. Hotel is like stepping back in time and the rooms were very comfortable and well designed (especially the bathrooms). Breakfasts were excellent and dining at night was a very pleasurable affair (but don’t do this if you are in a rush – it’s a very enjoyable slow affair and the servers are very good). The small reading room is very comfortable and I sat there reading a few books while watching the snow fall in the courtyard. Out back there is a large garden which must be good in summer. Would definitely recommend this place and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rm 28 is a bit small but fine for a couple or single person. It does get hot though and I had to ope...

The hotel is a former manor house/castle which has been carefully restored and well equipped with antique furnitures.
The rooms are very spacious and have a really large bath with Italian travertin. The house as an own chapel and a nice library with old books and personal pictures of the owners.
We also had a dinner at the restaurant which was really good (recommendation: cheese plate) and also the breakfast was nice - even a coffe-cap-machine is available.
We had an evening event at the bistro of the hotel (which is actually the club house of the golf club) where the staff was also very attentive and the food also really nice (even not on the high level of the restaurant of course).
Not really a place for family with children, but fantastic for couples for a nice romantic weekend, especially the cologne airport is just 20km away.

Room Tip: Choose the first floor, the rooms in the second only have small windows.

The Schloss Auel hotel is something quite different. It is located outside a small town near Cologne, in a beautiful scenery, about half an our drive from the city by car. In all aspects, it's got an ancient feel, but with modern amenities. It is quiet and stylish and seems the perfect location for weddings. A chapel is part of the Schloss.

During expo days, or busy season, hotels in Cologne may be hard to find or coming at a steep price. As long as you have a car, this may well be the perfect alternative: I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

The hotel is easily found. It's located relatively close to the airport, near highway 3 and 4. Both Cologne and Bonn can be reached in about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Reception was informal, pleasant and efficient. Staff explained restaurant, breakfast, rooms and extra's quickly. The rooms have names and are decorated accordingly. Room key is a real, old, big key that fits an ancient lock. Hallways, entrance, decoration: think nobility couple centuries ago. Stairs are crackling, doors are squeaking. Soft carpet, wooden furniture, tapestries. At the same time: wi-fi Internet, flat screen TV, good beds, refurbished bathroom. Rooms are clean and quiet. Windows can be opened. Internet is free of charge. There's no airconditioning.

The restaurant is in the Schloss itself, but seems a separate business: the bill can't be booked on the room, but needs to be payed in cash or with credit card. The menu offers 'cuisine' food: it comes at a price, but is well worth it. Breakfast is served in the same room. In buffet style, with all the things you'd expect.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

This hotel is excellently situated in a nice environment. Interior has kept its ancient style with modern flavours,e.g. a beautiful and modern bathroom in each hotelroom. The restaurant is fantastic. If you want to combine this with a 27 hole golf course, you can play that from the hotel. Excellent choise, certainly repeatable.

Stayed here with business for three nights in October 2009. fantastic place, rooms superb, modern but still with lots of the original character, service excellent, nice looking golf course and lovely location in the forest.

Only negative is the food, stodgy and very German!

Will be returning with my family in the future.

We absolutely loved the Schloss Auel! The castle is exactly what you would imagine a European estate to be. Old elegant furniture, chandeliers, beautifully decorated and preserved. The food was exquisite and the service warm and very welcoming.

I look forward to staying there again if we return to Germany. It was a unique experience laced with old world charm.
