“We loved it here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 November 2009

We stayed at Birdie's nest for the first week of November 2009. We chose to stay here partially because of the excellent reviews we saw on mytobago.com. Having stayed there, I have to say that Prince lived up to our expectations, even though as a result of the reviews, they were high. He was excellent. The place was immaculate, clean, and well equipped. The location is just great.

Prince took the time to help us get settled (took us to a bank to draw local currency, grocery shopping (he bought us "doubles" while we were shopping - they were delicious), took us to buy a snorkel, and showed us around a bit for orientation. He also spent some time in the evenings helping us to plan our week, and was a mine of useful information. We rented a car from him. He took us on a tour - I could go on and on. He was an absolute pleasure, and it's apparent that he loves Tobago and he does want folks that stay with him, to have a good experience overall. He certainly does what he can to enable that.

Our main reason for going down to tabogo was for snorkelling. Prince helped us to identify the best snorkelling spots, and to do them. He personally took us to 2 of them, another couple we did with the car we rented from him for a day, and the others we could walk to. It was fantastic.

The bottom line is that we would go back and stay at Birdie's Nest in a heart beat. Prince is a very good host, and very good person.

Birdies Nest is situated in a lovely location right on the beach, it has a rural atmosphere but completely safe. We stayed in the upper apartment which was very large as there was only the two of us, kept very clean and well equipped.

The deck has the sun all day long if you want it, the ocean can be strong depending on high tide but there is an area protected from the waves for the young ones, you have the beach almost to yourselves. It’s only a short walk to Stone Haven Bay where the slope into the ocean is much gentler and better for the kids, where you can get some lunch and a drink on the beach if you want.

Prince, your host is a very helpful guy “top dude”, he only lives just up the hill from the apartment and is on hand to help with literally anything you need, even if that means running into town to pick up a slab of beer!! “Which he did on more than one occasion for us”

There’s a local shop for very limited previsions also restaurants within reasonable walking distance, the “Fish Pot” being the pick of them for us. A local’s bar at the top of the street “Michaels” from the outside maybe you wouldn’t venture in, but do!! Great people, Michael himself a fantastic guy you’re made to feel welcome and everybody wants to have a chat, even shoot a game of pool. Michael can be a little unpredictable with his opening hours though!!........“It’s a Caribbean thing”

A car isn’t absolutely necessary but advisable as there are plenty of beaches to explore particularly on the Caribbean coast which would be impossible without a car. The island has a great feeling and it’s not overrun with tourists, some of the beaches get busier when the cruise ships come in though.

We both had a great time and would highly recommend Birdies Nest and Tobago itself.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Birdie's Nest holiday apartments are a gem, tucked away beside the beach on the Caribbean coast of Tobago, at Great Courland Bay. Located at the end of a country lane, our apartment house is quiet and secluded, but not remote. Far away enough away from the village to hear just the sound of the birds and the ocean, yet near enough to enjoy the village steelband, a Carib beer at the local "rum shop", or church on Sunday! This is the real West Indies. The real Tobago. This is Birdie's Nest. Birdie's Nest beach house sits on the shoreline, facing the sea. It is perched on a slight slope and enjoys a clear, cool, elevated view of the beach and the ocean. It is a typical two-storey West Indian house, divided into three beach holiday apartments. A single two-bedroom apartment occupies the entire upper floor of the house. The lower floor is divided into two one-bedroom self-contained apartments with lockable dividing door enabling them to be converted into another spacious two-bedroom accommodation when required. ... more   less
