“Chilled out bowl of paradise – with added lime”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2013

Carpe Diem is conveniently located in the village up the hill and equidistant to the main beach and Heavenly Bay or (Little Bay), as it’s known locally, which immediately became our preferred swim & lime location. The Boathouse restaurant there serve up delicious food, squid, prawn or fish in a coconut curry sauce and bake (coconut bread) was superb and also many cold bottles of Stag (a mans beer!) and rum punch naturally! Their drum & limbo evening was fun and a really good atmosphere with locals and visitors getting it together.
The house is also really handy for Bingy’s the fruit and veg King and Hazel makes bread and roti to order, turn left and Mr Coddringtons Bar is right there also good for take away beers, wine & spirits. Back at the house, The Green room had a personal fridge but we also shared the owners kitchen / living room which is really well equipped and has a large American fridge to keep food fresh and drinks cold, here all food should be stored to avoid attracting things!
We chilled out on the vast upper terrace that runs the full length of the property with amazing views of Castara Bay, looking out to sea directly west so an ideal sundowner location, and there were several impromptu get together’s with Chris and Yvonne, the wonderful hospitable owners, and other guests from the two studio apts. If someone would bring back whole fresh fish from the co-operative, on the beach, we’d BBQ and sit around chilling out (liming) all evening.
We watched pelicans dive for fish in the mornings, and a multitude of exotic birds feed, the bird book by my namesake was really useful. The garden and surroundings are incredibly lush, green and tropical, banana, mango, papaya, guava, coconut & lime in abundance… made lovely smoothies. The Coffee shop (Cheno’s) is very good for breakfast but surprisingly the coffee on Tobago isn’t the best, mainly serving strong instant mmmm!
Tings - Englishman’s Bay is spectacular and just what you would expect of a typically tropical Caribbean beach with just one small restaurant and gift shop.
Castara has it’s own waterfall well worth making the trek upstream and crossing the river several times to get there, easy now!
After a week here you feel like you already know half the village, it’s so friendly and relaxed a world away from the busy beach resorts in the south. Felt no real desire to leave except for a round of golf at Mount Irvine, and an interesting King David rain forest tour – it’s very green there!
Think – chilled out, easy-going, soon coming, no hurry no worry, one love, naturalist not naturist – Little Jamaica – Thanks to Yvonne & Christafari for providing all the ingredients for a wonderful relaxed experience.

Room Tip: Top floor for great views, studio's for more privacy with good views

Just back from our second trip to Castara and our second stay at Carpe Diem....well what can I say, it is just about perfect...we went two years ago and were so taken with Chris and Yvonne, the village and it's wonderful mix of people, the wildlife, sea and rain forest we wanted to go back asap. We stayed in the Studio at the far end of the deck, so good for bird watching, even before unpacking I was out there putting bread and bananas out for the Mot Mots, blue tanagers and the cheeky Barred Antshrikes. The welcome from Yvonne was wonderful, warm bread freshly baked by Hazel waiting for us. The sunsets are fantastic from the deck framed by the banana leaves, mangos fall on the roadside and if you get to them before the ants....yuuummmm! The Studios are all you need, airy, spacious, good bed, mosquito nets and fans which this time we used as it was warm at night, the wet room is brilliant, a quick run over with the mop and all sorted till next time. Although I would suggest coloured towels not white as they look grubby pretty quickly and maybe a bathmat on exiting the wet room.
It is easy to get involved with the goings on of the village, i.e.. helping to pull in the seine nets with the fisherman and if you help sort the fish you will get rewarded with a bag of fish to take back and share with your friends at Carpe Diem with a G&T in hand to watch the sunset! The Little Beach was our favourite with The Boat House run by Sharon, she puts on a great evening of drumming and limbo dancing....very entertaining! Cheno's at the other end of the village is the best for breakfast, we had coconut bake, eggs and bacon, lots of tea and coffee. On Saturday night he hosts an evening of eating and drinking rum punch with a Steel Band playing too!
Returning to Carpe Diem after an evening out you can put banana on the deck and watch a great variety of bats that swoop down to eat the fruit, the cicadas singing and the wonderful fireflies dancing all around the trees just in front of the deck, just so perfect! Even the tropical rainstorms are wonderful, they refresh everything and five minutes after you won't know it had rained! If you want to go on a guided trip to the Rain Forest, boat trip etc., Yvonne and Chris are there to help arrange something and are so quick and efficient it makes your holiday so enjoyable. We have met some very interesting and lovely people who are also visiting Carpe Diem, some have been back many times, some their first visit. Carpe Diem is really the most wonderful place and we find it is one of the very few places we feel we can relax completely. We are planning a family and friends trip in the near future...
WELL DONE YVONNE AND CHRIS.....You have certainly cracked it!!! We love everything you have done and are doing, keep up the good work and I hope the garden keeps on progressing...

We wanted to experience the real Tobago, and from the moment we arrived, this was it....tropic breezes blew away the need for A/C, and with the galaxy of gorgeous birds on our balcony feeder, who could want TV? Yvonne's friendly greeting and farewell bookended our stay, and she couldn't have been more hospitable throughout....we really felt we had made a friend who knew everybody in town, guided us to the beach bar, the fruit stand, the local restaurants, the limbo contests, gave us lemons from her garden, and even went out of her way to find for us a distant ATM that worked when the one in Castara rejected our foreign debit cards. We had a wonderful, totally relaxing time -- snorkeling, bird-photographing, exploring the working fishing village, walking to the nearby waterfall, booking a trip to Little Tobago. (Though theoretically the "dry" season, we were gifted with one overcast, rainy day that afforded us the unheard-of luxury of sitting, drinking rum, and counting 19 species of birds at our balcony feeder!)
Our room was totally comfortable, clean, and well-equipped, while the balcony offered fantastic sunrise and sunset views high over the ocean. (On our travels around the village, we saw the outside, and some of the interiors, of other accommodations...Carpe Diem is the best, as far as we can tell, both in its location -- close to, but not subsumed by, the "action" at the beach--and in its bright, airy, tastefully spare decor.) Its hillside perch even pushed us toward a little exercise, in the midst of our largely tropical torpor!
Our one disappointment was completely beyond anyone's control, in that the previously pristine, sandy beach had been roiled by unusually huge waves the week before our arrival, and lots of rocks and coral chunks had littered the entrance and egress from the lovely water. However, the snorkeling was still quite good, and the local clean-up effort had already begun, so we imagine this to be a temporary inconvenience. And, the resident herons didn't seem to mind the disruption any more than we did.
All in all, a fantastic find in an authentic village on a lovely island with wonderful, warm hosts.

Room Tip: We liked the efficiency apartment closer to the garden...particularly if one is a birder. The upsta...

That sea surge surprised everyone! apart from the coral being thrown up on the beach several boats went down or were damaged. All temporary though! The beaches cleaned up and the boats refloated and it is back to business, sea, sun, sand , bitta fishing, bitta liming!
I trust you took part in the limbo? So happy you were able to make the best of your stay!

My Husband and I stayed at Carpe Diem for one month during November. It was our first visit to Tobago. From the off the communication and booking procedure was faultless from Chris & Yvonne, who answered all of our questions immediately and thoroughly. Our accommodation exceeded our expectations and the view was breathtaking. We had everything we needed to be able to cook ourselves great meals, sleep comfortably and securely and relax. At Carpe Diem you are waking up and living very closely with nature. Its just beautiful, almost priceless. The local food is excellent especially the bread from the local ovens.Denzil, Doris & Pandy deserve huge thanks for their hospitality and kindness. We can't reccommend it enough for a relaxing, get-away-from-it-all, holiday. It will remain a fantastic memory for us. Thanks !

Having sampled the charms of Tobago a few years ago, I was very keen to return. My partner and I chose to come for New Year to totally unwind in beautiful, hot, tropical surroundings. Our stay in Castara didn't disappoint! We were totally looked after by Denzel and Doris and the apartment had everything we needed to make our stay relaxing, comfortable and stress-free. Carpe Diem is perfectly positioned. We absolutely loved feeding the birds each morning and watching the flock of colourful parrots emerge from the rainforest! We also really enjoyed the visit from gardener Ponday who trimmed the leaves to give us an even better view of the bay and gave us fresh banana's and cocoa straight from the garden. We will definitely be back!

Always happy when somebody goes home having had a great stay in Castara and at our house because that is what it is, our house!
We built it for us, our family and friends to enjoy and in the end it would have been selfish not to be able to share the Castara experience with others, many of whom have now become friends !
Thankyou for your kind review..........

The owners of Carpe Diem have put a lot of consideration into their property. It has all the basics, a good quality cookware, and a very useful book with information about the town of Castara. The room was perfectly clean when we arrived, which was well appreciated. The studio has a nice balcony, which is great for bird watching and enjoying the view. The room itself is very nice and comfortable. I didn't care for the setup of the washroom, the shower is open to the rest of the washroom, so the whole floor is constantly wet.
We had a bit of trouble during our stay. The housekeeper was sick, so we didn't receive any service during our stay. We also didn't have a cell phone (I had understood that one would be available). Because the studio has wireless internet, we were able to contact the owners, who promptly responded to our concern. However, I wasn't thrilled that the cellphone was borrowed from the housekeeper's son... I had hoped there would be a communal cellphone that the guests shared.
All issues aside, I would definitely stay here again if I was visiting Castara. The rates are reasonable and despite some small hiccups, the studio is a very nice place to stay.

Room Tip: The top studio has a private balcony and a slightly better view.

Sorry about the phone! Alas the one we could have lent you had not been returned so Doris lent you her son's phone. Yes the bathroom is a fully tiled well drained 'wetroom' but any water soon evaporates and we do supply a 'squeegee' mop to wipe the floor.
The wi-fi is a great asset and we are glad you were able to make full use of it! Some guests actually bring their work with them and stay in touch with their offices!
Maybe they do not tell the boss where they are...............................?
Thankyou for the review and really pleased you enjoyed your stay and experience of Castara.

We came here in 2010 as a family group, see our previous review on 14/10/10, and we couldn't resist coming back.
There is so much to see in the world that we generally only visit somewhere once or twice but Castara is going to be the exception to the rule!
As we could only go to Tobago for 1 week this time we originally thought we would just stay in the Crown Point area for a change, but after dithering for sometime and looking at reviews for many different places, the decision was made.... Carpe Diem at Castara it had to be! So happy we made that decision! We had the green room upstairs as Chris and Yvonne weren't in residence, so had the benefit of the lovely big private balcony to enjoy the views. Everything was in good order again and there were no problems at all. It was good to have internet access this time (wifi better than we have at home!) it means you can stay in touch with those at home (if you wish) without running up enormous phone bills.
We mostly relaxed on the balcony, fed the birds, and wandered down to the village to buy a few supplies and enjoy the beach and have a dip in the beautiful clear warm waters. Just what the doctor ordered!
If you want to dive, I couldn't recommend Richie at Wild Turtle Diving highly enough! An incredibly helpful, flexible and friendly guy, more than happy to sort dives to suit anyone.
So next year? I'm sure we'll be back again!

When guests return we know we must be doing something right!
We are fortunate in that we get so many really interesting people staying with us but sadly we never get to meet most of them.
We fell in love with Castara 10 years ago and after we built the house we knew we would have to share the experience...............As we said, it is easy to get to but so very hard to leave...
Sarah & Tim, I am sorry we keep missing each other.
One of these days I hope you are there when we are so we can share a G&T on the balcony and swop stories? Great having you both again, I hear you have made quite a few friends in the village now?.
