Spent 3 days in Castara Retreat. nothing but praise. We loved it. Everyone was most helpful
A small walk to the beach. This time of the year the beach is yours, no tourists. The locals are most helpful and very honest. They will not overcharge you. We will surely return.

My husband and I were tired of typical tourist trap summer vacation. Instead, we wanted to wake up overlooking the water, for nature to be surrounding, birds and fresh air, We found paradise at Castara Retreat and so much more. Though only the 2 of us we stayed in the Rainnforest bungalow as a present to ourselves. The pix on website represent very well and we could not have been happier. I will never forget waking in the morning to the sounds of the waves, pulling back the beautiful bed netting to the immediate gorgeous views, & snorkeling every day. The owners Steve and Sue (were on-site that week) and staff Kenny and Lilliana we're beyond gracious and kind. We happen to also chose this due to the Raw Food Retreat so we all bonded and consider all dear friends. The town's people were kind to us as we searched to buy fresh fish catch of the day or misc venturing out. We cannot recommend this paradise strongly enough and we cannot barely wait to return to Castara Retreats.

Room Tip: Range of bungalows can match your desire and budget for each stay. Confirm not time of year of Carni...

We are a couple of "50 somethings" who wanted somewhere special to spend their honeymoon. Having never been to the Caribbean we read various reports and reviews and Tobago and in particular Castara Retreats seemed to tick all the boxes. And boy, were those reviews spot on! We were looking for somewhere quiet and laid back, with wonderful views, warm seas and a feeling of being back to nature. We were joined on many occasions by the resident lizards and also the passing birds and bats that decided to use the lodge as a short cut! Our 2 weeks in Coasthanger certainly lived up to expectations. We both loved the sound of the sea crashing onto the beach, the countless species of birds that visited us every morning for breakfast- they particularly liked the banana bread crackers and fruit we took turns to prepare for them! and not forgetting the spectacular shows the many different hummingbirds put on for us around the feeder that Kenny kindly lent us.
The fact that June was the beginning of the rainy low season meant that on some days the beach was our own, except for a few locals and the fishermen drag net fishing for the daily catch. The rains seemed to come mainly overnight and any short shower we did happen to have during the day was refreshing and quickly over.
We hired a car the second week which was arranged through Kenny with no problems at all and explored the island and rainforest which was great fun and an unforgettable experience. Englishman's bay, just 4km north proved to be our favourite beach with great snorkelling and white sands.
Overall we had a wonderful time and already thinking about going back. The only downside we can say was that we were unfortunate to not meet the infamous Porridge and his wife we had read so much about, as they had actually flown back to England on holiday on the same plane we arrived on. Never mind, next time. Kenny stepped up to the role and helped us out whenever we needed it. We hope to be returning soon.

Spent a week at a Castara Retreat, staying in Hummingbird1. Lovely place with easy access(providing you are fit because it is up a steep slope) to the beach. Village of Castara very relaxing and safe, people friendly and helpful. Porridge and his wife always friendly, cheerful and helpful. Restaurant at Castara is very good, and there are plenty of places in the village that served good food as well. Holiday paradise.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have air con, have fans instead. Nights are hot, we did not have aircon and coped but...

Our stay at Castara Retreats was simply perfect, as always. The view, the garden, lots of birds… what else could you ask for? The views and the sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks are just spectacular. We can't recommend this accommodation highly enough! Porridge, Jeanell as well as all other staff are wonderful hosts. They are happy to answer any questions you may have and they make sure you love this paradise as much as possible.
We enjoyed chatting with the other guests at the bar of the restaurant which is part of Castara Retreats. Kenny, Patricia and team serve Italian style food with a stunning sea view included. Don’t forget to try the fabulous selection of rum sitting at the bar!
Go down to the village and get in touch with the locals who always give you a nice smile. It is also a good opportunity to talk with other visitors.
This was our ninth trip to Castara and we are already trying to figure out when we can return. Can't wait!

My wife and my second visit to Castara, this time to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We loved our first visit - an oh-so-short week - so came back for a fortnight this time.

We came with plans to get out, do more and see more this time around. But again we were charmed by the place and instead chose to spend most of our time within the village.

Pretty much everything in Castara made us happy - the beautiful bay, the lovely accommodation, Porridge and the team, the new (since last time we came) bar and restaurant, the birdlife (I particularly liked the hummingbirds, my wife the barred antshrike), the ladies in the village baking and selling fresh bread (somewhat taciturn, as you are warned in the information provided by Castara Retreats), Vera's roti at the Almond Tree, buying fish from the fisherman's co-op, seeing the agouti, local beer and homemade rum cocktails, the occasionally unpredictable opening hours of the shops...

We hired a car from Porridge and ventured out for an explore. We enjoyed Charlotteville in particular - pleasant place for a potter!

There was a lot to be happy about. Thanks to the team for helping make our stay so lovely!

Our third, but not final visit to Castara Retreats, was as relaxing and tranquil as ever. We are very glad that this little gem is on our doorstep from Trinidad. Porridge, Kenny and the team again made us feel more like friends than paying guests (we did still have to pay). You get the feeling that nothing is too much for this great bunch at this great place to stay and unwind. Already booked to head back to our hideout on the hillside later in the year. If you're after peace and quiet with a background of the sea crashing or lapping on the beach whilst you hang out in your hammock reading your book and sipping an ice cold pina colada or if you fancy dropping down to the beach for a snorkel and then heading back up to the restaurant for lunch or dinner then book it now. Lazy days indeed. No hesitations.
