“Amazing Stay, great staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2013

This is not a five star place, but I would not have asked for a different experience. I stayed in the dorm which has about 10-15 beds in it but burres are also an option with space for 2 people. My favorite part of staying here was the friendly staff. The woman who manages the place is incredibly hospitable and treated us like family. They made it a point to learn our names and paid a lot of attention to us. I did a dive with Blue Lagoon next door and saw that it was not as intimate as Oarsman's because there were many more people staying there. Cons of Oarsmans would have to be the bathrooms, they are pretty dirty but if you don't mind that too much, you'll be okay.

We originally wanted to stay at Blue Lagoon next door, but as there was no availability was offered Oarsmans instead. (It seemed this was also why everyone else was there too!)
The beach and water is amazing! Clear blue waters and a great place to spend some time.
The accommodation however definitely could do with a freshen up. The bures were nice and big with ensuites but really do need some TLC.
Dinner the first night was a lovo (cooked in the ground) and was really nice. Aspart of this, they also hosted Fijian night with dancing and music. This turned out to be good fun but everyone is pretty much forced to join in which I know some weren't happy about!
Our time was almost entirely spent on the beach or snorkelling which was great.
Lunch on our final day was disappointing. Pasta and bread. And the portions were tiny! Most of the people sat down asked for seconds, which to be fair were provided. Although its annoying in the first place when you're having to pay a compulsory meal plan.
I've heard much better things about Blue Lagoon so if you can I'd try and stay there. Oarsmans definitely need to up their game to compete! They seem to be relying on overflow from Blue Lagoon.

If you are looking to experience the real Fijian hospitality and Culture, then Oarsman's Bay Lodge will provide that once in a lifetime experience.

A beautiful place that is untouched by Skyscrapers and the tourist upheaval. The beach at your door step with nature's cure everywhere you go: Sun, Moonlight, sounds of the waves, birds and people enjoying the Fijian Spirit that is everywhere present with the Staff, Local villagers and the Chief and his lovely family. You feel a part of the Fijian family. The genuine care for you during your stay is something money not cannot buy. It is sheer gift, obviously from their Cultural heritage and belief in God, the creator and source of all things.

The singing, Kava ceremony, delicious food, and general things one may need to make one's stay comfortable was provided.

If your looking for luxury accommodation like the five star resorts then Oarsman bay is not for you. But if you an excellent bed to sleep in, quiet and laid back surrounds then book this resort.

It is a hidden gem that one must come and experience. It is an Awesome once in lifetime holiday, place to share with a loved one or family members, a place to find the true self, a place to find that peace you've been searching for in the world.

First point to make - don't come here if you want five star, international hotel style accommodation. Come here if you want a traditional Fijian experience.

The beach was the best beach we saw in Fiji. It was perfect.

The food was okay... But to be honest nowhere in Fiji, apart from our last three nights in a five star, international hotel had delicious food.

We got a free upgrade to a Beach Bure which was nice, could do with a freshen up but considering we had paid for a dorm room we were very happy :)

Basically the only point I need to make here is perfect beach, perfect beach, perfect beach.

I just stayed at Oarsman for 3 days with a group of friends and whilst not as 'flashy' and touristy as Blue Lagoon next door, the resort has lots of character and friendly staff. Yes the rooms and shared bathrooms for the dorms could do with a freshen up, but the quieter location and more rustic feel is what I was after. Food was simple but good and prices at the bar were reasonable with the rest of Fiji. A selection of activities - fishing, snorkeling, village tours, mountain climbs, tree planting etc. However its not a party island and if you're coming here, its to chill out and relax.

Overall I would recommend this place to you if you were after a budget accommodation option where all your money goes back to the village as opposed to an international company next door, however I wouldn't come here expecting the boutique feel that the Blue Lagoon can offer.

Oarsman's Bay is located on a beautiful beach with a reef (for fantastic snorkelling) right out the front. Another thing I learned later (from expat Aussies) is that the bay is one of the few in the Yassawas where you can swim all day, other bays get too shallow to enjoy for large parts of the day.

Yes the accommodation is rustic but clean (cleaned every day). I was needlessly concerned about the lack of air conditioning in the rooms, the breeze through through the fly wired louvres kept it cool all day and night.

The food was pretty good (but a little more fish on the menu would have been appreciated). The breakfasts consisted of eggs (done a variety of ways to your ordering) and bacon, fresh fruit and cereal. In addition some other choices that changed daily (the banana pancakes were a highlight!). Lunch was a mixture of things including Fijian style curry chicken to fish and chips. As other reviewers have noted, there is not a choice but this is true for all but the high cost resorts in the area, that said there was only one meal that I did not enjoy. Also loved the afternoon cup of tea or coffee at 4pm

As for activities, the Friday night traditional feast and entertainment by the local village was a highlight lots of dancing and laughing by al. We also did the trip to the cave, fishing and fish feeding and snorkelling at Blue Lagoon (the snorkeling was better out the front of our Bure, but still good to see).

As other reviewers have noted this accommodation is small and locally owned, which gives you an opportunity to get to know the locals as well as the guests (who change over most days). The staff are very thoughtful, an example was there was one day where there were only five of us so the lunch table was set up on the beach under a shady tree, where we watched the 12 new guests arrive!

A few tips, take your own snorkelling gear (they have a number of sets for hire at a modest price, but to be safe bring your own) and also bring some snacks and bottled water with you. All in all we enjoyed our three night stay here.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the beautiful bay, the beachfront ones are just a bit closer.

We recently stayed at Oarsmans Bay Lodge for 10 days, and would like to say that we had a truly WONDERFUL time there. Absolute paradise, with a beautiful sandy beach and colourful reef right at its doorstep for all day swimming/snorkelling, great walking trails all over the island, warm and welcoming staff, and a great range of activities.

There are lots of negative reviews recently, but they should really be looked at in context- this resort is a locally run resort in a very isolated location, and in the opinion of our group (4 adults and 2 young kids), the staff do a fantastic job. Yes, the rooms are not 5-star, but neither is the price, and they are clean and contain everything you need.

This is a great place to take a family and get a feel for the real Fiji island way of life. We will be back as soon as possible!!!!

Room Tip: The Family Bure was great for our group of 4 adults and 2 children. It is positioned close to the co...
