“Beautiful last two nights in Trinidad”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

We stayed here on our way out of Trinidad, and it was a peaceful way to unwind and relax before hopping on a plane. (it's surprisingly near the airport). The building and rooms are very nice, clean and comfortable, and staff are very professional. It was a step up from the very simple guesthouses where we had been staying and was a real treat. Not a lot to do there, but that was fine with us. The food was tasty (though we were hungry at lunchtime - few options). We enjoyed exploring the area around the church and along the hillside.

We stayed in Pax Guest house, Trinidad, on a birding trip in late April. Pax was once part of an old monastery and the calm, beauty and serenity of this location was just what we needed after a long flight. The views from the guest house are stunning. The guest house is well located in the foothills of the northern range of Trinidad, and is an excellent location for birding, airport stopover, business, or just to chill . We stayed in an en suite room with spectacular view across lower slope of the mountains to Tunapuna below.

The management and staff were exceptionally warm and friendly and did everything to make us feel as welcome and comfortable as they could and the food and service were excellent. The guest house is run by Gerard (an expert birder) and his wife Oda, who were happy to help with contacting the local guides and drivers for us. The gardens have been planted with flowers, shrubs and trees, chosen to encourage the birds. The outside and dining area is delightful with views up into the mountains and hummingbird feeders bringing a dazzling array of birds into the adjacent trees.

One of the best things about Pax is that it has three verandas with beautiful views, where you can sit outside whatever the weather, so despite an unseasonal storm, we had a very productive stay, watching many species from the feeders and plants in the garden. The sweeping vistas outside the front of the guest house proved to be a great place to see many other species thermalling above the spectacular views.

I would have absolutely no hesitation in staying at Pax again and hope one day to return.

Pax is perfect for unwinding and recharging yourself. The church, which is a 5 min. walk up the hill is absolutely incredible. If you are into nature and looking for a breathless view of Trinidad esp. at night Pa is perfect. The two storey house has approx. 15 rooms and is probably 100 years old, the furniture is antique, the floor is wooden and the dining area is spacious and you can enjoy the chirping of the birds and view them within meters. The house is very well kept (kudos to the staff who pride their job not swayed by management. The staff at Pax are very friendly and provide an excellent service except the manager who is a little bit rough around the edges to locals (i noticed and was part of a little unfriendly unreasonable treatment being a local) . However the staff made up for the shortcomings. All in all I will highly recommend Pax.

Room Tip: Any room located to the east of the two storey house.

Pax Guest House is located in the hills overlooking Tunapuna, next door to a monastery church. It backs onto an extensive area of rain forest, and so is incredibly peaceful (well at least after the parrots go to bed !). The house dates from 1916, and is cool and spacious, with much fine furniture dating from a similar period. In fine weather meals may be taken on the terrace, which has a number of well-used hummingbird feeders. The food is varied and excellent, and includes local specialities. Gerard and Oda are incredibly friendly and helpful, as are the rest of the staff. The best place I stayed in Trinidad and Tobago, and I would recommend it to anyone, especially if they are interested in birds or other wildlife.

Our second stay at the Pax and it was lovely to be back after a ten year interval.

The Pax' advantages are its utterly peaceful setting, access to the airport, easy birdwatching in the adjacent monastery grounds/rainforest, simple comfortable rooms, homemade food, interesting mix of guests and Gerard and Oda's birdwatching expertise, kindness and organisation of reasonably priced trips. Kenny, their ornithologist/driver is excellent, as was the taxi driver who took us down to Caroni for a great boat trip with Sean Madoo.

Pax is perfect if you want to step out of the rat race for a few days and enjoy staying somewhere out of the ordinary.

Room Tip: Room 10 [downstairs] has air-conditioning and an ensuite.

We stayed one night at Pax, only about 20 minutes from the airport. It is a guesthouse once associated with the adjacent Mount St Benedict Monastery, and thus is on a steep hillside overlooking the main valley. It has about 20 rooms, most with private baths but the upstairs rooms have only a sink with bathrooms just a few steps away. My room was small but adequate; good bed, wardrobe, sink, small table and a superb view out the large windows. It serves three meals, not just breakfast. Dinner is served outdoors on a really nice verandah, other meals in an adjacent dining room. Food was quite good.

For visiting birders, this is an excellent choice for first and last days near the airport. We saw and heard several birds which we missed on our nine day guided birding tour. The verandah has hummingbird feeders, there is a view over a wooded valley, and the proprietor is a good birder. There is a trail which can be taken through the woods, and one can walk around the various levels around the monastery.

This beautiful facility is nestled in the mountains overlooking Port of Spain. The propreitors are caring wonderful folks that provide excellent service and support. The food they served was xcellent with sufficient proportions. I stayed here for eleven nights. I would recommend it without any reservations.
