Reviewed 25 June 2014

this hotel is nestled in well kept grounds a couple hundred metres from the beach. There is a wide variety of plants and trees that surround these wooden cabins that gives the feeling of really being out in the wild. Although there were not all of the creature comforts one would expect from the usual hotel experience, this wasn't your usual hotel experience at all. Don't get me wrong, with hot water, refridgeration and electricity, I didn't miss my computer or air conditioning at all. The nights were cool and to sit out on the porch under the sky in the calm of night with the sound of the sea in the distance made it one of the most romantic things I've ever experienced.
There were tours at night to the Grand Riviere beach to watch the endangered leatherback turtles come to nest. During the day, there are places close by that offer kayaking up into the Grand Riviere (river) itself, this was something I really wanted to try but time didnt permit. The restaurant food was really good, the breakfast menu offered sufficient variety from your typical continental breakfast to a few local delicacies served with homemade bread and hot cocoa tea (amazing).
i do hope to return there soon.
thank you Acajou... and Thank you Sasha<3

My family & I have stayed at Acajou twice. The setting, the staff & the atmosphere are all....to die for...as they say. However, we had an issue with the fact that kids 5 years and older are charged full adult price. As far as I know. this is not industry standard. They was no negotiating and we felt that there is no reason why Acajou should vary from the norm.

My boyfriend and I stayed here in May and absolutely loved the property. The staff were warm, friendly, inviting and helpful. The cabins were beautifully appointed, open, airy and very clean. The bathroom has a large tiled walk in shower with opening walls and windows. Great mix of a Polynesian island style. The canopy bed was a great touch with a magnificent view of the river and ocean thru the hammock. Each room has a nice sitting couch, awesome hammock, ceiling fans, refrigerator and plenty of open space. We were lulled to sleep by the bullfrogs in the river and awaken to the birds chirping in the am.
We couldn't say enough about the Restaurant on site. The Swedish chef prepared fresh meals using local products with a Swedish flare. We thoroughly enjoyed every meal. Our waitress treated each guest like they were VIP's each time we saw her. We were able to buy wine by the bottle and take to our room or the beach. And you don't want to miss the rum punches.
We were also fortunate enough to see the Leather back turtles coming right up the beach during the day to lay their eggs. This experience alone was absolutely awesome. I highly encourage all traveler's to experience this from Late April to June. I would love to go back to see the little turtles hatch and run for the beach. The Scientist center right down from the hotel gives great guided tours at night to protect the turtles and educate the tourists.
You also don't want to miss the local craft shop right on the beach. He makes great carved bamboo glasses, lights, candles, canisters, jewelry, and will customize anything you ask for. Great pricing and friendly local guy who also does tours to waterfalls and around the area.
The drive to the resort takes you thru quaint little settlements. We stopped at the Lighthouse in Taco and were fortunate to see turtles swimming around the rocks. Make sure you have gas when you head out to the Riviera, although we had run low,the resort quickly arranged for us to buy 5 gallons from the locals right next door.
The beach is quiet and the perfect place to lay in the sun or shade at any point during the day. Our only regret was the stay was too short. We spent a week in Tobago before making our way over to Trinidad. Well worth the trip and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Cottage #1 is probably the closest to the beach but they are all within a 3 minute walk literally wi...

There is a stillness in the Grand Riviere that is so inviting. The views on the drive into the town are spectacular . Once you arrive, the Acajou provides an almost perfect base for your turtle nesting experience. This lovely, romantic hotel is comprised of a set of well equipped wooden eco-cottages with hot showers, good bedding, decks with hammocks, and mosquito nets. The hotel restaurant offers a variety of locally caught fish as well as meat and vegetarian options and homemade ice cream. Because everything is cooked to order by the hotel chef, dinner is a slow process to be savored. The staff members are very conscientious. The hotel has its own beach path that leads you right to the water. A short walk will take you to the turtle conservation office where you can buy your access pass and join your guide for late night turtle watching experience. During a three-hour period at the beginning of the season (mid April) over 30 turtles were laying their eggs on the relatively small protected beach. How utterly magical it was to spend the evening with the turtles under the light of a full moon, and then to wake up at the Acajou to the sounds of several bird species singing. It was a dream come true. The hotel was costly but worth it. My only issue was that breakfast hours were not well defined-which caused a delay in our departure. I can't wait to return.

We capped off our exploration of Tobago, then Trinidad with a stay here. Glad we did not find it sooner, or we would have never left, an it gave us our only great impression of Trinidad. (Tobago was spectacular tho) this area, and hotel is very different from the rest of Trinidad, partly because of its isolation. its truly beautiful area, in the rain type forest, Just beautiful. the hotel was one of the best I have stayed in out over 100 throughout the world, for service, beauty, cool factor and value. its not cheap, but definitely worth the price and the drive. A great representation of what I pictured Trinidad to be like before I got there.

The separate little villas we great, and felt very private, and built so well. the eco theme can be found everywhere. loved the hammocks on the deck.

this is the only great service I found anywhere in Trinidad or Tobago. this applies to the hotel and restaurant service.

the only knock I would put on this place is that its not right ON the beach, but it is close, there is a cute little path to it and you can see it from the decks of some of the villas.

the town its in is nice, felt very safe and friendly. had a few nice walks and met a few cool locals. met a few cool fellow guests too, from Australia, Germany and Japan.

was a great find to finish my trip to Trinidad, and left me very happy with my trip.

Room Tip: ask for the ones with a beach view.

The Acajou is located in the village of Grande Riviere, which the Rough Guide describes as 'idyllic'. I would say it is 'potentially idyllic', but it is certainly tolerable for a few days to go up and see the Leatherback Turtles. The hotel itself is a group of pretty decent cottages or cabanas, each of which seems to have a deck which looks out over the property. The restaurant has good food and very friendly service from everyone, especially Tonisia and Katisha. Although we were the only guests at the time and they could have been very bored, they took excellent care of us while we were there.

The cottage we stayed in looked across the property to the river, which empties into the bay about a hundred metres away. The bed was comfortable, if hot. The ventilation (open windows) permits all kinds of flying friends to share the room with you if you are not careful. If you are going there, take insect spray to prepare the bed and then anchor the mosquito net down with shoes. If possible, try to get the fan inside the net as it is not much help if it is on the outside.

The cottage we had was in a very sheltered location in the trees so we were unable to get a through breeze, which would have helped the daytime temperatures. In comparison with other Tobago and Trinidad locations, we found it very hot and humid.

The bay is really beautiful and empty of people. It is so crowded with turtle nests that late arrivals can dig up earlier nests. Not content with that, some turtles nest so low to the waterline that the waves wash away the nests or expose them to the vultures who are waiting for just such an event, or better, the hatchlings themselves. From a European perspective, it is really sad to see the small turtles massacred by dogs and vultures, but I suppose that is all part of the cycle. There are some guards or mentors funded by local authority who try to take care of the hatchlings but they seem sadly overwhelmed by the competition. Do go, pay for the night time observation tour and learn from the lovely local guides. It's a drive but really worthwhile.

Room Tip: Make sure you have insect repellent
