Ten divers spent a week at the Manta Lodge in June and had a fantastic time! Although the resort itself is a little run down, it's charming and cozy. The staff is the best ever, especially Julia and Caressa in the restaurant/bar. They were so lively and fun, not to mention attentive! If you are looking for action this is not the place to go. There are a few restaurants down the road worth going to, especially Jemma's Treehouse, but there is no shopping or night life. This place is for divers!
The dive shop staff is wonderful, so helpful and fun, particularly Toolie, Marvin and the rest. It was a very memorable experience.

Room Tip: I liked having a queen and twin bed, but you can ask for two twins to be put together to make a king...

Best place ever! The hotel is located at the end of the calm village of Speyside, right by the ocean. I´t is clean and cosy with a nice pool and chilling area and a restaurant. Free wifi. Nice rooms with view over the Atlantic. At first we were staying at another hotel up the hill where I found it a bit difficult to sleep, due to all the roosters and dogs barking all night. At Manta Lodge the only "noise" was the soothing sound of the ocean. The co-owner Kathleen is very friendly. She really made us feel welcome. One night she arranged for us to visit a nice small restaurant with a fantastic view in a nearby village, Castle Rock. Many other she fixed us some snacks and food when we were hungry. She also helped us arrange a birdwatching tour with an experienced guide, known as the rastaman.

Birdwatching is nice to do in the rainforest or on the island "Little Tobago", located in the bay of Speyisde. But the real wildlife you find underwater. Most tourists come there for the diving. Manta Lodge also has a diving shop, run by the experienced diver Sean. They catch fresh fish for your dinner every day. Besides going diving with them you can join the boat to go snorkeling, or just get what you need, walk 50 meters and dive into the school of fishes in the ref located outside the hotel. You really never have to leave the place. We hardly did.

My experience with the Manta Lodge was like meeting old friends. A most relaxing and simple experience with stellar vistas of the Carribean and the craggy outcrops. This birds are singing in this tropical hamlet and the island charm takes over. The diving with Sean, who is the proprietor ,and his crew was spellbinding as the condition of the reefs and the abundance of life will leave you breathless. I have dove in the Carribean for the last ten years and this place was like an aquatic Garden of Eden. Sean has the islands pulse in the palm of his hand and is a man of great charm and intelligence. I would heartily recommend the Manta Lodge especially if you dive.

A fabulous experience.

Great hotel in a quiet beachside community. Right on the beach, walking distance to the few small shops and restaurants in town. Impeccably clean and comfortable.

But what really sets it apart is the people. Kathleen and Sean and all the rest of the Manta staff are amazing. They are always willing to go out of their way to make sure you are having the experience you want, from INCREDIBLE diving with the most experienced dive crew we've ever dived with, to arranging a special anniversary dinner for us with lobster caught that day, or putting together tours of the national parks, this is a place that immediately treats you like family.

We are already planning our return visit!

As long as you're okay with a quiet town where nightlife is good conversation at the bar rather than raging at a club, this is a wonderful place to spend some time, especially for divers!

To get a real feel for the beauty and attitude of Tobago head to Speyside and Manta Lodge. If you're a diver its a must but its also a great launching point for anyone who wants to explore the undeveloped eastern end of the island. Pristine empty beaches, rainforest, and amazing views overlooking Speyside beach. I especially enjoyed the sunrises over the water and Goat & Little Tobago islands with the smell of jasmine wafting from the tree below my room's roof deck. Its more like a visit with old friends than a hotel stay with Sean and Kathleen's charm and the tasty home cooking. Manta's hospitality and flexibility allow you to forget about schedules and flow with the moment. The dive staff were attentive, knowledgeable and very passionate about the area. Grab a drink at the end of the night and get owner Sean Robinson into conversation. He's a great story teller and Tobagan cultural icon who should be listed as a Speyside "attraction" in any guide book.

Room Tip: The roof deck on room 12 is right above the jasmine tree and offers great sunrises and star gazing.

We arrived to the Manta Lodge in the evening so had no idea of how beautiful it would be when we woke up in the morning. The lodge sent a driver to retrieve us from the airport and they were very kind to get us so late. It took almost an hour at the customs line so be prepared for a potential wait. Just arrange with Kathy for your transportation to and from the airport. On our first night, after we met Kathy and Sean, we knew this was going to be an adventure. *tune in Indiana Jones theme song music*

The lodge is homey – a large comfortable bed, spacious room and walk in shower so it was easy to get cleaned up after a day of diving. All rooms are ocean view. The décor was tasteful and the atmosphere was like being with friends. They have a dining area and Moray Eel Bar. The food was great and the ladies worked hard to get things the way you liked it. If you need something, be sure to ask. You can walk out your room door and to the back is rainforest trails and to the front is the ocean. Sean owns most of the land around that area and intends on keeping it pristine and wild. We ate at the lodge for most of our meals but we went over to Charlottesville one night for dinner at Sharon’s which was delicious. Don’t bother with places along the main road as they are overpriced though try to get into Jemma’s if possible. Sean is very social so you will drink with him. He will tell you like it is, so don't be too sensitive.

We booked the trip with scuba diving in mind. We had our orientation in the morning and got to diving first thing. The drift diving is known as some of the best in the world; it was true to its reputation. Sean is a very accomplished diver so you are in good hands. I cannot speak enough praise about Sean’s crew. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Sean and Tian were great dive masters, and Fedor, Fedor was the best. He is your elevator back into the boat and a great dive master. Everything is big in Tobago. Amazing coral growth, the largest brain coral and carpet sponge in the world. Lots of turtles, huge sharks, and the stupidest damsel fish in the world. When you go, you want to do a night dive; octopus, lobsters, enormous crabs, and drift diving at night is an adventure.

We spent a week, diving all week and then seeing the island the last day. We hired Kenneth to be our guide. Kenneth is an absolute riot. Kenneth knows literally every person on that island, is knowledgeable about island information, and is a perfect guide. He took us to Argyle Falls, a hike in the rainforest (he is an expert bird caller!), and then to Englishman’s Bay to snorkel and have lunch. We took the circuitous route around the island and it was a splendid time. Just ask Kathy, she will take care of you.

If you're headed to Tobago, I highly recommend the Manta Lodge. You won’t be disappointed!!
