My husband and I had a great time here. The staff are lovely, the rooms were clean, pool was amazing and the drinks on offer were great, a bit strong at times. The run punch from the nylon pool bar was the best.

They have shuttle bus daily to a white sand beach, which was handy and they will if possible drop you off to the local mall if required.

The guys at the front foyer were really nice and Ava from golden holidays was a great rep, very friendly and was always in hand if needed.

We made a few friends which made our holiday great. The al carte restaurant is really good, the lamb shank was delicious.

The hotel will benefit from putting on daily entertainment especially at night. The Friday entertainment which was a band was excellent with great socco music .

Will definitely come back.

this hotel is beautiful. staff was poilte and friendly. the meals were good but expensive. the only thing is the beach was not conducive to bathing but the breeze was refreshing. if the beach was good i would not leave this piece of paradise it was really away from everything. you felt like you were in a different world.

We always hoilday in the Caribbean over Christmas & New Year as it's our anniversary and through no fault of our own LaSource in Grenada closed suddenly in October and we were sent instead to Tobago. We originally booked Christmas Eve arrival for 10 days Adult Only in Grenada (way back in Feb 2012 as usual) and ended up with a New Year's Eve flight to Tobago not Adults Only for 10 days!
I will not bore you other than to list the Pros & Cons for this hotel so that you can be fully informed without any rose coloured spectacles.

PROS
The rooms are well appointed with separate shower and bath, air con and fan
Beds are traditionally huge and comfortable
Fridge in room
TV in room (?)!!
Tea/Coffee making facilities
Piano bar and our favourite cocktail barman FRANKLIN always smiling (Keep on shaking til it feels right!!!!). All the piano bar staff were excellent happy and smiling and nothing too much trouble.
Thank you to BERNARD (Food & Beverages manager) for trying to make amends and bad luck for being on duty that night!!!
Kalina restaurant food and service excellent thank you Marcus for looking after us.

CONS
We were kept waiting for ONE & A HALF HOURS on arrival as our room wasn't ready
Beware that your credit card will also be taken in case of incidentals (even on all inclusive)
NYE Gala cost an extra $80 and was NOT included in all inclusive as we found out on arrival!
NO premium brand drinks or champagne
No music in the room
Hotel is on the Atlantic and is as bad as the indoor skydiving machines
All rooms are ocean view (delightful if they were on the Caribbean side)
Rooms receive a cursory 10 minute clean and was missed altogether on one occasion. They will soon become very grubby as hotel only opened in June 2012 and the showers are already full of limescale!
The beach disappeared as the atlantic waves crashed against the shore
There is absolutely no respite from the noisy buffeting wind. No shaded or calmer areas to escape the incessant wind & sea noise battering your every step.
Adult only pools are not signed so children use them too!
Sign your life away every time you order food or drink (even on all inclusive). You have to sign a receipt for every single meal and drink (except breakfast). Yet another excuse for staff to keep you waiting and ignore you!
Rude, ignorant. lazy, disinterested staff who did not really want to be working at all. Rolling of eyes and sucking of teeth was all too common.
Air con is on full power almost everywhere so you will need a very warm wrap
The hotel makes a point of asking if celebrating anything....and then completely disregards it. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and it came and went without a mention!
Be aware that the Sunday Live Jazz night may not be what you expect i.e no pianist or live band rather an ipad with a singer attached, In all fairness he did put it on top of the piano! Despite our disappointment he was actually very good and the audience of 6 seemed to enjoy the night.

To summarise
The hotel layout is fundamentally flawed as the main swimming pool and sun lounge area should be facing the golf course (west). The wind on that side is just a lovely pleasant breeze and would certainly have made for a far more relaxing experience. This hotel has a corporate rather than a holiday feel and had several business types walking with attached laptops and mobile phones. Very few holiday makers here it seemed as if a lot of visitors from Trinidad and local families out for meals or meetings were invited to make up numbers and give an appearance that the hotel is busy.

We have struggled to find a word that best describes this hotel, food and staff and have concluded that ADEQUATE is the word.

Room Tip: The further away the quieter if you don't mind a stroll.

We went on our honeymoon and had a great time in this beautiful country. Many people mention the unfriendly staff here, we didn't really encounter this; they weren't necessarily sickeningly over-friendly as the Americans seem to like but they were never rude. If you bother to travel to any of the rest of the island you will notice the contrasting quality of other hotels and perhaps also the shacks in which the locals (such a the staff) live and then you can understand why some of them are short with guests who make a huge fuss about channel 37 on their satellite TV being a bit fuzzy.

A cold welcome drink on arrival was very welcome, though the cash deposit that was demanded for our stay (which we weren't made aware of before our arrival) was a lot less welcome as it took a huge chunk out or spending cash so we ended up having to max-out the credit card. But there are very few other things I can complain about.

We had 2 rooms connected as our suite (we treated ourselves as it was our honeymoon!), and they were both were clean, air conditioned and well furnished. A hot-tub on the balcony over looking the Atlantic ocean was just bloomin' lovely.

Breakfast was fantastic, lots of choice and varied every day. Sitting outside whilst you eat freshly cooked shark 'n bake whilst listening to the ocean waves and watching pelicans fishing for their breakfast is hard to beat.

A well equipped fitness room, 2 pools, a pool bar, pub, 2 restaurants and direct access to the beach are several good reasons to stay at this hotel but I highly recommend you hire a car and get out and see the rest of the island, or at the very least speak to reception about going on a rainforest trek, snokelling or turtle watching trip. If you spend your whole holiday sat by the pool you really are missing out on an amazing island.

Negatives of the hotel (other than the unexpected cash deposit) were: the rubbish on the beach - lots of plastic gets washed up after traveling across the Atlantic ocean but the hotel didn't appear to make much effort to keep this clean; the restaurants were very expensive if you were on half board like we were - I forget what they are called but the buffet restaurant (where breakfast is served) is a complete rip-off for what's on offer, and the other 'proper' restaurant was equally priced but to be fair, the food was worth what we paid for it. So if you are forced to eat there, go for the second one.

It's probably also worth saying that we met some friends at the Turtle Beach hotel and we were glad to find that the Magdalena was much nicer!

This is a great hotel but suffers from its history ( previously a Hilton and now part owned by government) as the staff are basically lazy and lack attention to detail. Hotel is currently at about 20- 30% occupancy and looks empty as its located on such a large footprint.

Pool area is great with clean water and lots of beds to chill out on. Staff just need to clean the area a bit more. I'm a smoker but finding cigaret butts and trash around public areas is not nice. Beach gets a good sweep but not the area that the public lay out on?

It would be nice to get poolside service but as I said lazy staff who are possibly underpaid.

Rooms are nice and balcony comfortable with a great sea view

Breakfast is generally good but evening Buffett is average to poor. Only went once and the food looked boring and was Luke warm. On the upside the pasta station was so busy that you had to wait in line. Drinks especially wine are limited in choice and vastly overpriced even for Tobago.

They have a fine dining fusion restaurant and the food is possibly the best on the island but covers are limited and on one evening we were turned away.

The restaurant manager, Robyn is a real gem... Way too good for the hotel!

Top tips:
If you have children be warned the sea is rough and has undercurrent.. Stick to the pool

If you want to eat out the Italian in Bucco Reef ( about 120TT return in a taxi) is very nice.

If you plan on using the 18 hole golf course (adjacent ) to hotel don't bother. It's in a state of repair and buggies are not allowed on the serviceable holes

I've been hard in the review but this is not a cheap hotel that thinks its 4 star

We had the very pleasant experience of staying at the Magdalena Grand Beach Resort over the Christmas period. The Hotel is set in very large grounds that they call the Lowland Plantation, that corporates an 18 hole champion Golf course, several lakes and some private housing. Leading to the entrance to the hotel you have a very impressive water feature, then you enter a large comfortable lobby/reception. In the main building there are several restuarants, bars and a shop. All the bedrooms are incorporated in two wings, one on each side of the main building. There is a covered walkway leading to all the rooms giving protection should it rain. All the bedrooms have a sea view.

I have noticed that on several trip reports, advice was made suggesting that the rooms nearest the main building are more convenient in general. Yes this may be true if you are elderly or infirm, but personally we found the rooms at the furthest ends much quieter and relaxing as they were away from the noise coming from the swimmingpool and the hum coming from the plant rooms close to the main buiding. Wherever you are, it is no further then a five minute stroll and as the grounds are picturesque, we found the walk to and from the main building extremely pleasant.

We were on a Bed and Breakfast arrangement, and that suited us fine, as it gave us more freedom to choose where we were eating. We indulged ourselves on three occasions by visiting the "Kalina" (fine dining) restaurant, as I believe you can only have the pleasure twice if you are on an all-inclusive package. The food was excellent at all venues, but we did find the buffet restaurant a lttle limited. Breakfasts were a sheer delight, having a huge choice and being able to sit outside was refreshing, especially early in the morning. (worth getting up early for!)

If I have to give any criticism at all, it was the absence of some facilities over the actual Christmas period, as some of the shops were closed, also the Spar was shut for three days and we were unable to book any tours from the hotel on those days. It was a bit of a shame those facilities were unavailable, but I do understand that staff like to have some time to enjoy
Christmas at home with their families. My wife did have some treatment later at the spar and was extremely happy with the service.

All the staff we did meet, were extremely friendly and efficient. It is tempting to name a few but that would unkind to all the rest, as they all did a superb job.

I would certainly recommend this hotel and given the chance, we would love to return ourselves

Paul. D. Gallagher.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second and third floor have better sea views
