“Luxury hotel,with some small issues..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2014

I stayed here for a fortnight with friends. Hotel was a Hilton in its glory day,and is now government run. All the facilities were in place, nice pool, beautiful setting, excellent breakfast, nice bar,and comfortable rooms. It is set on a large estate, behind a golf course, and is a 15 minute taxi ride to town. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. There were some issues with the cleaning,I didnt get clean bed linnen till i asked, after a week, bathroom was never cleaned, they just made up the beds. Fridge didnt work at all,I reported it twice, but no action taken. Twice there was no water for a couple of hours, and the keycard system had me locked out of my room on 3 occasions. But all in all a great stay..the friendliness of the people make up for any shortcomings in the efficiency!

We stayed here on an all inclusive basis with out 3mo son. The whole experience was so amazing, the staff couldn't be more helpful & were incredibly kind with the baby. The food was great, we ate at kalina & the hotel let us take the baby as it was low season. The room service was great too, it was included in our stay aside from a delivery charge so we happily had cocktails in bed.

We had a beautiful sea view & saw the turtles during birthing season. I would highly recommend the Cajun prawn wrap too with a mango blasted cocktail.

Positives: amazing view from both room and lobby, great food at the pool side bar, cold drinks from 11am to 10pm at both bars, amazing breakfast, comfortable bed and bath. Tub, shower, extra toiletries. Great service from all the staff. Free With-Fi
Negatives: isolated in the plantations estate, a car is essential if you plan to leave the hotel. The bar closes too early. Wi-Fi was a little too slow for me.

Room Tip: Any room with a ocean view is worth it.

Stayed for a week in early March with husband and grown up family. On all inclusive basis and suspect we got our moneys worth. Good food and alcohol with great cocktails especially from the Nylon Pool bar, served by very friendly, helpful girls.

Good quality hotel in lovely setting bang in the beach and with the added advantage of being in the Atlantic side of the island so that a good breeze was blowing most of the time to keep us cool and comfortable. Went to the Caribbean sea side on the shuttle bus and did not like it as much as too busy for us.

Rooms clean and spacious although a little dated and A/C could have been better but we noted that quite a few other reviews mention this. Our solution to getting a bit warm at night was to remove the duvet from the very heavy cover and use this duvet with the sheet. A little surprised that we did not appear to get a change of sheets for the whole week we stayed but towels replaced as we needed them.

Great sea views from rooms and all around the resort and lots of places to sit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Pelicans fishing in the afternoons and frigate birds circling. We sometimes took sunbeds to the sandy beach to the left of the hotel (looking seaward) and enjoyed absolute seclusion being able to swim in the sea. The hotel told us that they didn't recommend swimming in the sea as there was a bit of a swell but as the sandy beach was so shallow if you were a confident swimmer we didn't feel there was any risk and found that it was quite OK. Is surf was high we didn't go in sea and enjoyed the pools in the hotel. Lots of comfortable sun loungers and always found somewhere to lounge without feeling crowded. Didn't find having to sign for towels a problem, quite normal in our experience.

Food was generally good but sometimes we found the evening buffet a bit uninteresting. Had two meals at the Kalina restaurant which were very nice and we found that food at the sea food bar was good. Had very good service from Leon who was charming.

Booked a couple of trips out with hotel and got very good service from Ricardo, who was most informative about the various trips available. He always made a point of interacting with us when he saw us.

Other staff varied from being equally charming to a bit surly on occasion. Generally however everyone was very pleasant and we would certainly return to this hotel again.

We are fortunate in having been to other Caribbean islands and found Tobago to be the best so far. So relaxed and easy going , lovely place.

We toured the island and found other hotels mostly on the Caribbean sea side but these did not look as nice and we would choose to return to The Magdalena.

Dear Valued Guest,

What a delight it was to read your review. We are thrilled that you have enjoyed our little island paradise so much that you named it the best you have visited in all your Caribbean travels.
Not many visitors are able to appreciate the relaxing environment the island offers, or our culture. We really know how to forget the worries and appreciate the life all around us, and we are so glad we got to share that with you and your family.

Thank you for taking the time to mention our team members who went the extra mile to make your stay more enjoyable. We would be sure to pass along your kind comments.

We certainly look forward to welcoming you soon again!

Sunny wishes from Tobago,
Magdalena Grand

This was our Carnival getaway. My boyfriend and I were delighted by the idea of staying at this highly rated resort. We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by the staff who allowed us to check in right away. Our room was amazing. Clean, spacious and well maintained. We even had our own patio to lounge in on mornings or evenings.
We did not have any reason to leave the compound since we were comfortable. Each morning after breakfast we would relax by the "Lil Nylon Pool bar' where we were treated with friendly smiles and high quality customer service.
The restaurants however was a bit disappointed in relation to their limited range of selection. Also, the meals seemed to be overpriced for the portions and quality received. Improvements in this area should be top priority.

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean-view but to enjoy the view, you should stay on the higher floors.

My husband and I had a great weekend with a few hiccups along the way. However, the GM Carolyn was astounding and super efficient in dealing with these issues ensuring that our satisfaction remained intact for the duration of our trip. Unfortunately, another supervisor named Ria was extremely rude and discourteous, leaving us wondering how someone with clearly no customer service skills and manners could be hired in such a lovely place. She is the reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
The rooms were well kept, comfortable, clean and gorgeous(on the 2nd floor) with beauteous views of the sand and sea.
At breakfast every morning, Ainka Moore was very accommodating as well as Misty at dinner. Both were very polite, courteous and friendly making us feel very welcomed at the hotel.
The girls at the pool bar were especially efficient. We spent most of our weekend on that side of the pool and nothing was ever a problem for these eager-to-help and chatty girls; Tasia, Cutie, Tanisha and Natasha.
The engineering department leader and his team are also very up to mark in their service to the hotel and their guests!

Room Tip: Second floor rooms are the best!!

Dear Valued Guest,

We appreciate you taking the time to share your review with us.
Your feedback has been forwarded to our management team. We also wish to advise that we have increased our maintance crew to assist with the overall upkeep of the resort. Being on the Atlantic side of the island keeps things challenging as we battle the sea blast, however you can rest assured that we are on top of things and maintance is part of our daily schedule.

Thank you again for your comments and we hope to welcome you soon again.

Warmest regards,
Magdalena Grand
