“A Fawlty Towers dining experience!”
Reviewed 2 November 2012

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for our ruby wedding anniversary week away. The hotel is beautiful and the gardens really well kept. The views from the hotel are stunning and if you hire a car as we did (from the airport £130 per week with Maggiore, if you book on the internet) there are plenty of lovely places to go and see. However ... the dining experience was truly awful, so bad in fact that it became hysterically funny to us and our fellow guests. Breakfast consisted of cheese and ham that was so thin you could see through it, stale, hard bread and croissants and yoghurt. Dinner, well what can I say? You would not think it hard to serve simple dinners to guests that are at the very least, warm. Antipasta was served with the vegetables for the main course at 7.45 pm, the restaurant opened at 8.00 pm and by the time you reached your main course the vegetables were either all gone (and not replaced) or cold. Sweets were only served every second night (the other nights you could have an apple). It reached the stage where the guests were forced into behaving like schoolchildren and hoarding vegetables immediately and plating up their sweet before they had had their main course. It really was a shame about the food, because my wife and I didn't anticipate a culinary feast for what we were paying for the week's holiday, but simple, wholesome cooking served up hot would have more than sufficed. The staff were really nice people, and would help you in any way they could.

We had wonderful time at this lovely hotel and in this beautiful area at the end of August. The pool area was beautiful and the food was superb and plentiful! We loved the Calabrian evening with wonderful Calabrian folk music and local meats and specialities. There was a fun but relaxed atmosphere and everyone joined in with the fun and games in the evenings. The mini bus to beautiful Grotticelle beach was great for our teenagers but sometimes we walked down to Santa Maria beach for a change. The sea was incredibly clear and beautiful. We booked a boat trip to Vulcano, Lipari and Stromboli with the little german speaking kiosk by the supermarket in the village and it was much cheaper than booking it through the reps.It was a great trip and leaves from Grotticelle beach. We used the local railway (a 15 min walk to the station) a couple of times , to Tropea and Pizzo, both towns well worth visiting. You don't have to buy tickets for the train in advance, a ticket seller is on the train but sometimes he can't be bothered to move far up the train!! Dominique, Ruggiero and Rosy, the animateurs, Felix and Barbara plus all the lovely people we met, helped make it a great holiday!

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the garden area are quieter.

I had a fantastic time at Hotel Baia del Capo. A huge thanks to Dominique who made us feel so welcome from start to finish. The pool was the right temperature and a good size, the room was lovely and the buffet we had was delicious. I will certainly stay here again and would highly recommend it to families or couples. Thanks for making us feel so welcome!!

Calabria and Baia del Capo come highly recommended. Just returned from 10 days half board with our two grown up children. The hotel is small with beautiful gardens, immaculately kept rooms and has friendly attentive staff. It is family run and this contributes to the relaxed atmosphere. There is plenty to do. The lovely Dominique at reception advises on trips to markets, sightseeing, shopping needs. The beach shuttle works like clockwork thanks to Francesco driver/gardener/pool man extraodinaire, Roger, the waiter, explains the menu and grandmama produces excellent. local fish dishes, anti pasti etc and a spectacular Calabrian feast. The fruit is delicious.
There was a lovely mix of different nationalities at the hotel and we made many friends, language differences not proving a barrier. For August, the hotel had an activities programme
and our children loved daily aqua fit sessions in the sea and zumba sessions by the pool.
A big thank you to Barbara and Bianca, the animators. Baia del Capo and the surrounding area
is a little piece of paradise. A big thank you to everyone for a truly memorable holiday.

Just returned from holiday, hotel was very clean, quiet, friendly staff who could not be more helpful. However, the dinners were very poor not italian, cold and we only had one hour to eat the food from 8-9pm. Shuttle from hotel to Tropea was very good and onlt 3.5 euro each way. Would recommend the hotel and area if you want a realy peaceful holoday. No local bus service.

Room Tip: some rooms back onto the railway line but local trains going past did not spoil sleeping

Had two weeks at this hotel and never again. It is a really isolated place and without sun there is just nothing to do. They charge 7 pounds to take one to the local centre which is only two miles away. Unless you want to pay 300 pounds per week for a car it really is isolated. One week is enough but two weeks is too much. The hotel has a pool but nothing else.No entertainment in the evenings and after 20.00 the dinner is served there is not much to do after. The breakfast/lunch/dinner is for one hour only a bit like being at school. You will meet Rosie who is running the place and her Mother. I have to say that I lived in Italy for a few years and know the south and Sicily well but this is the most boring hotel ever and I would not recommend it. Try another one!!!!

Had two week stay at Baia del Capo and had a great time. Great homemade food which is delicious and a great host Rosie. Beautiful women in all ways and made us feel at home. The area has amazing views and is a really special place. Free shuttle service to the beach and 7 euro trip to go to Tropea which is the nearest town. From the hotel you can see Sicily the island and trips to Stromboli, Lipari and Panerera. Magical place with food from mamas cuisine and the good weather cannot expect a better holiday. Ignore the comments in review of worst hotel as that is far removed from what we experienced.
