Country Hotel Borgo Sant'Ippolito
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 July 2013

This hotel has been lovingly restored and is set to get better. It is isolated but the nearest station is a reasonably priced taxi ride away. It was really easy to get the Florence train. We chose this hotel on a cost basis being well located for touring and close to Florence. Our rooms were on the road side but that wasn't a problem. Bedrooms were very nice and traditionally furnished. The restaurant was good but not open every night so check it out in case you come back hungry because there is nowhere to go nearby. Nice staff at reception and in the restaurant. Our young waiter was particularly good. We would definitely recommend this place.

Stayed here on business in June. You don't get the warmest of welcomes if you are a foreigner but it is a lovely quaint, rustic hotel in a great location and the facilities are good. It has some nice grounds and the rooms although basic are fine. Compared to the over inflated prices in the middle Florence this is good value. Can't recommend dinner though.

The hotel is definitely in the countryside in the nice location. The hotel itself was clean and nice, and the staff was helpful and friendly. However, there is nothing close by, so if you need to go out to purchase anything or eat elsewhere, you need to travel by car. We happened to have a room over the kitchen which was extremely noisy well into the night. Other rooms are located with a door right in the dining area - also noisy and somewhat odd. If you book here, be sure to ask about your room location ahead of time.

The Borgo Sant'Ippolito is a pleasant hotel with friendly staff. Our room overlooked the courtyard and was a good size, with a desk, fridge, sizeable bathroom with a shower, and WiFi access. The Restaurant served a good breakfast with fruit, bread, cereals, meats and cheeses, and good coffee. The dinner meals were delicious, but a little on the expensive side, and one evening it was closed (they let us know in advance though).

Bicycle hire is free although the bikes have not been well maintained. The hotel is on a main road but we discovered a safe walking/cycle route into Montelupo which follows the river - exit the hotel car park and turn left, follow the road for about 100m and the pathway is on your right. It's about 2km and easy on a bike - it's walkable too but definitely not suitable for luggage.

There was a nice outdoor space for sunbathing but it wasn't peaceful with the road so close. The pool is small and cold, but didn't stop me taking a dip (we visited in May but I imagine in July and August the cold water is more welcoming).

The hotel's main fault is it's location; we chose the Montelupo area because of its position on the main train line between Florence (Firenze) and Pisa, but unless you have rented a car, the Borgo Sant'Ippolito itself is very isolated and the train station in Montelupo is a couple of kilometres away. They offer a transfer service to Montelupo station, which was basically members of staff dropping you off or picking you up in their cars. The transfer service was expensive at €15 a time, for only a 5 minute drive - unfortunately we were not warned about the cost beforehand and we had a nasty shock at checkout after using this service for nearly a week! For the cost of the transfers we could have hired a car for that period, or spent our money on a hotel in Florence. They also couldn't pick us up one evening so we walked from Montelupo using the walk/cycleway which follows the river.

There was also an additional €5 tax at checkout to pay.

Once you get to the train line there are frequent, inexpensive trains to Florence, Siena, and Pisa (via Empoli). Florence is only 20 minutes away by train. I would thoroughly recommend taking advantage of the trains, even if you have hired a car - there is parking in Montelupo.

I recommend the Country Hotel Borgo Sant'Ippolito if you are planning to hire a car to explore Tuscany, otherwise you may end up spending more than you expected and it may be more convenient staying elsewhere.

I stayed there for one night in early spring. The hotel is in the middle of the Tuscany countryside, on the edge of a main road. Very convenient location to enjoy all the wonders Tuscany can offer, just halfway between Florence and Pisa. You definitively need a car to get here, with a huge free parking area in the hotel (guarded). The hotel itself is housed in what seemed an old church with a country house attached (very smooth integration). Rustic style was present throughout the hotel.

Reception stuff was really nice and professional, readily available to help with suitcases and bags in order to reach the upper level, where rooms are located (didn't see any lifts, so check beforehand if you need one). Our room was just upstairs from reception, huge, warm and beautifully decorated in rustic Tuscan style, with a comfortable double became plenty of storage space. Bathroom was again very ample, nicely decorated and featured a decent set of toiletries (standard Italian four star). We had a very good night sleep with no noticeable notice from the road at all.

Breakfast was served in very small cozy tables overlooking the courtyard and featured standard continental options. Not the best I ever had but certainly good enough, especially if you enjoy pastries (which we did). There only were A few salty options.

A final tip, if you enjoy the countryside there is a beautiful steep road that leaves the main road direction Florence on the left some 200meters from the hotel that takes you all the way up to the hills. Highly recommended.

Overall, a very nice and relaxing small hotel, plenty of character and with an unbeatable price/quality ratio. Highly recommended as a base to explore different areas in Tuscany by car.

I've been a few times in this hotel.

It is rather far from Florence, so if your plan is to visit the city (or have business meetings there), that's not a great location as basically unreachable without a car. As well, be sure to ask for a room not facing the road, or can be very noisy.

Hotel structure is very nice, beds are comfortable, and very reasonably priced.

I traveled to Borgo Sant'Ippolito this february for a work meeting. The hotel is approximately 20 minutes away by car from Florence, although to visit Florence is much better to drive to the small village the hotel is in train station, and take a train to Florence. It will leave you in the center and very near to the Duomo and all the turism attractions by foot.

The hotel is nice enough, the room was spacious and very clean, with a view to the vineyards around the road. Breakfast did not offer a very wide selection, but it was more than enough to find something to eat. We had lunch in the hotel and the food was pretty good too, Italian typical foods.

If I return to Tuscany I will consider staying at the hotel again, since it's quite near to everywhere (Florence, Pisa, Etc.) and the rooms and service was very lovely.
