“Generous Hosts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2013

So many reviewers of this delightful accommodation have reported on the glorious countryside with its wealth of history and endless number of interesting hill top towns and villages. All of that is true and it is an explorer's paradise. Even with our four week stay in Il Forno Uno we did not exhaust all the possibilities of sightseeing. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind and tune in to Italian time, alternating days of exploration with swimming, reading, relaxing and just enjoying the view from the terraces or the life of the village as it wakens in the morning and comes to life again in the evening. Our enduring memory though is of Colleen and Tom's extreme kindness and generosity when we had a friend join us for ten days. They could not have been more welcoming and provided privacy and comfort at no extra charge in a second apartment rather than have our friend sleep on the sofa bed. For that we are extremely grateful. We will certainly hope to stay again when we return to further explore this lovely part of Umbria and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a high degree of comfort in a living, working village.

We were delighted to be your hosts for a whole month and it was a pleasure to accommodate your dear friend at no extra cost. We are grateful for interesting, thoughtful and intrepid guests like you all who love to explore our region. I was surprised that one guest thought Piegaro remote as it is only 15 minutes in either direction, north and south, to the main A-1 super highway. 45 minutes to Orvieto or Cortona. We were lucky to find this remarkable property so central to many things to see in Umbria, and right on the border of Tuscany, but perhaps, 15 minutes feels like forever. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and please stay in touch!

Just returned from a wonderful holiday staying at L'Antico Vetreria in Piegaro. Our hosts Tom and Colleen couldn't have been more helpful and they have renovated the old glass factory beautifully, we stayed in La Terraza which felt like staying in a medieval castle but with modern amenities. We also saw the other apartments and all are of a very high standard and have wonderful views of the Umbrian countryside.

Would recommend the trip to the Monte Vibiano vineyard which Tom and Colleen organise, the trip to the vineyard on the electric buggies was fun and the wine and olive oil is fantastic. We also attended the cooking demonstration with Salvatore the local chef, who gets the kids involved in making pasta etc.

Piegaro is a typical Italian hilltop village, with very friendly people. It is quiet and very safe if you have children who can play in the piazza with the local children. There are only 2 restaurants in the village but both are excellent. Tom takes you round the village when you arrive so you meet the butcher, restaurant owners and supermarket owners.

We absolutely loved our time at Piegaro and are already planning returning next year. Thanks Tom and Colleen for a wonderful stay.

We just returned from a trip to Italy, including a week at L'Antica Vetreria in Piegaro. We stayed in the gorgeous villa with our family, including 2 young kids, and our friends with two young children. L'Antica Vetreria is perfectly located between southern Tuscany and northern Umbria, making it the perfect place to rest up before each of our daily adventures to visit different hilltop villages.

The kids absolutely loved the gorgeous pool, the cooking classes offered by Chef Salvatore at one of the local restaurants, playing soccer each night in the village with the local Italian kids, and walking to Bar Fortuna for incredible gelato.

The adults loved relaxing in the villa, the pool, and the ease and unique experience offered by staying in the village. It was great to walk to the local butcher and grocer and cook at the grill with local foods that we collected during the day. It was a pleasure to kick back with a limoncello while the kids ran around the streets with the local kids. It was a treat to walk to the bar in the morning for croissants with nutella, and an italian coffee, or to walk to get a drink and a gelato at night.

Pretty much the only downside we experienced was finding a scorpion on the wall in our villa one night. That was a bummer, as it freaked everyone out. Although it's a nice thought to "live like the Italians live" with open-air windows (a.k.a., no screens)... considering the price you pay for vacations, it would be better to have screens on the windows and to miss out on "that part" of the Italian experience!

With that said, we would definitely return to L'Antica Vetreria, perhaps someday with an extended group of family. Perfect place for a "family reunion trip". Arrivederci, Piegaro!!!

We are happy that you enjoyed your visit with us and will return someday! We certainly loved having you and friends in the Villa. The scorpions are harmless actually and do not sting. It is impossible to screen the floor to ceiling windows in the Villa and we do not have mosquitos. So sorry that it scared you. I will make a note to inform that they are harmless.
We look forward to hosting you again,
Colleen and Tom

Just back from Italy and an excellent stay at L'Antica Vetreria. We had an appartment with a terrace that backed straight onto the pool which our children enjoyed very much. There are more glamorous hilltop villages in Tuscany and Umbria, but the flip side is the village of Piegaro is very quiet and safe, which gives kids the opportunity to head out on their own for ice creams... There is plenty to do in the area, and as set out in the many reviews the owners have thought through the set up of the appartments very well, the conversion of this very old building respects the old but with modern comforts and Tom and Colleen are on hand to advise on activities far and wide.

We loved having you and your children with us in il Forno apartment next to the pool. We are thrilled that we found such a big property in such a safe and welcoming village. Guests love that children can go on their own to the café for a gelato or play safely in the piazza with the Italian children. Life in a small hilltop village is the true essence of an authentic Italian life. Thank you for such a nice review and we hope you will return someday!

Yes, you can have the best of both worlds. L`Antica Vetreria is a beautifully restored and converted ancient glass factory offering a number of different and flexible accommodation choices, all of which have just about every modern convenience you could wish for. So the old and the new combine seamlessly and the result is perfection.

We stayed in the unit called Il Forno Due, and this was really well-suited to us - not least as my wife was experiencing some acute walking difficulties and, being all on one level and with a walk-in shower, the accommodation was just right. This apartment is very spacious and extremely well-equipped - including probably the best self-catering kitchen we have have encountered, and we have encountered a few! The only slight downside of this apartment was that it didn`t have a terrace leading directly off it, but then this was our trade-off for everything being on one level. And, besides, we did have our own specially designated outside area on an elevated terrace above the pool. This area has a beautiful view of the complex itself set in the lovely Umbrian landscape.

When you stay at L`Antica Vetreria, you buy not just accommodation but, potentially, a whole `package` of which you can take as much or as little as you like. So, for example, the extremely friendly and helpful hosts (Tom and Colleen) offer a wine-tasting tour, they arrange introductions to local restaurants, bars and shops, and they arrange visits to good restaurants and to evenings in nearby villages where there is good food and entertainment. In addition they provide a general `concierge` service to guests with advice, recommendations and practical assistance on everything from places to see, places to eat and how to `navigate` all things Italian. All this is done in a genuinely helpful but non-intrusive manner. It is a refreshing contrast to the sometimes impersonal, sterile service that can all-too-often be encountered in otherwise efficiently-run hotels.

Tom and Colleen are really good proprietors, custodians and managers of L`Antica Vetreria. This can be seen in the way things have been planned and organized to run smoothly, all geared up to ensure the guests can relax and have a really good time. Both of them work hard, are involved and are `hands-on.` They appear to be supported by an efficient team of cleaners and support workers.

Other reviewers have commented extensively on the location of this property and its ideal position in terms of visiting many villages, towns and areas of outstanding beauty and/or interest. Those reviewers are 100% right. You cannot run out of places to visit and things to do. Sometimes, however, the right thing to do might be simply to experience Umbria through a detailed appreciation of one local area. Staying in Piegaro at L`Antica Vetreria would offer the rewarding opportunity to immerse yourself in the village, the culture and the local rhythms of life.

This was a brilliant week for us (13th to 20th July) and we are entertaining thoughts of returning as part of a larger family/friends group.

We highly recommend L`Antica Vetreria

We were delighted to have Brian and Pauline as our guests and are looking forward to having them once again, perhaps, in the Villa with more friends or family! It was a great week and they bonded with other guests, took part in local activities and still managed to see a lot of Umbria. As Brian noticed, Tom and I strive to make our guests' stay a memorable one and we are encouraged by valued guests like Brian and Pauline who appreciate all that we do. Grazie Mille, Brian for a great review and for gorgeous photos that you sent us!

Our family spent a week in Piegaro at L'Antica Vetreria. We had such a great time. It was really comfortable for our two families - and we loved the town. It was a great location for day trips to more hill towns than we had the time to visit. We also enjoyed staying in Piegaro and enjoying the pool. Colleen and Tom are wonderful hosts and made sure anything we needed was available to us. We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Villa - but several apartments are available too for smaller groups.

This is the best of an Italian experience. Piegaro is a picture perfect village and L'Antica Vetreria the place to stay. Our apartment was the best accommodation we had during our entire three country month-long European journey. It was tastefully decorated with a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and gorgeous views out of every window. This is the place to recoup and relax. Tom and Colleen are gracious hosts looking after every detail to make one's visit memorable. The best part of staying with them in Piegaro was the cooking class and contact with local villagers and merchants who all were so friendly - and oh so patient with our Span-Italian. Great place for couples needing a get away rest or for a family building memories. Don't miss it!
