“Imperial Surprise 10 - 15 September 2013”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

As a result of a double-booking elsewhere we spent 5 nights half-board here. It is a very modern, quite vast hotel. The entrance hall is huge. The staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. The food choice and quality was excellent. We ate outside for breakfast and dinner. I saw the comment about the coffee and breakfast, it can take a while for it to arrive but wasn't a major issue. I was slightly surprised at how many very young children there were there. It wasn't a problem but it was noticeable. Most were pleasant and entertaining. Kolymbari itself is a small village with a reasonable range of shops and tavernas.

The beach is a bit of a walk away and the swimming is good. There were some interesting jellyfish! There are tavernas at the end of the beach and a small fishing harbour as well.If you want a change from the bar in the hotel - and draught Mythos - turn left out of the front of the hotel.

Our room was excellent with a large balcony and huge bathroom.

We took the bus from Kolymbari to Platanias and to Chania. We know both well from previous visits and it was an easy trip.

A lot of people were using the large swimming pools at the hotel. They were pretty spectacular. I used the gym - it was ok but some of the machines were in need of repair.

As mentioned in other reviews the wifi is a bit of a problem. It was best in reception but distinctly patchy at best.

All in all, we enjoyed our short stay here, the food was a highlight and the staff were very good.

Room Tip: We were on the west side with a view across the hills, it meant that it wasn't full in the sun w...

We had a week at this hotel in October. Wow the room with your own Pool on the Balcony, freezing cold but it Was Fantastic, taking a dip any time of the day and night. Lovely staff, Very Friendly. As the hotel was closing for Winter the following week, Nothing was Too much trouble, and got the same service as any time of the year. Just next door to the Hotel is a Lovely Taverna serving lovely Greek food, oh and Big Bottles of Cold Mythos. Hotel is Expensive but always are in 5 Star. Walk along to the next village, lovely Restaurants over looking the sea,Beautiful. Try the Taverna at the end, Before it goes to a bit of a slope, the last taverna up by the rocks is Expensive. The one before is Fantastic, you order your drinks and they bring a plate of cheese, meats, olives Read, after that they bring crisps and nuts every time you buy another Drink.Forgot the name now,but could be Pav's. Enjoy, we will Be back. Loved every minute.

Room Tip: All rooms look Great, Private Balcony Pools cost more, But are worth it.

We stayed at the Imperial a week in August. We had a room with private pool and it was really great. My wife and I could sit and read in privacy while our two kids just jumped in and out of the pool at will. The food was suprisingly good, not Michelin standard of course, but there were lots of choices and most nights a good selection of greens. The hotel has a good location - not too far from the airport (30 minutes taxi), and a five minute walk to a small town centre by the sea with some nice fish restaurants. Athough the waves were pretty big most of the days we were there the beach was nonetheless adequate (bring bathing shoes). We had a small incident with the cleaning, which customer relations handled elegantly. All in all a great stay, we were suprised by the high standard, and will surely be coming back.

The hotel has two parts - the main part, big, noisy with a big pool and closer to beach, and the second one - across the street small, more quiet with it's pool. The rooms are large, comfortable, bot they have serious problems with wifi. The beach is rocky, across the street. The food is good but after a few days I started seeking for something original, because it was more or less the same all the time.

We booked back in February because of a very good deal through Travelzoo and glad we did. We got a 2-week stay at the beginning of October for a very reasonable price on half board basis with a room with private pool, which clinched the deal for us.

The room was great and the private pool absolutely amazing, especially when it got really hot again in the second week. We never had a private pool before and certainly made use of it! Food was the best we ever have experienced in any hotel, variety and freshness second to none. I especially would recommend to try the roast of the day (chef carves it and it changes daily) - we has some great chateaubriand etc. The only problem was the difficulty to get coffee at breakfast, it took ages and sometimes never came. It is only served by the staff and they are always busy with clearing tables etc. When they come with a (small) thermos of coffee it often run out before they made it to our table. Other than that it was good, too. Fresh (fresh) orange juice, too.

The comments about many (small) children in the hotel are true. During our stay there seemed to be a lot of Scandinavians with children, most of them well behaved, but we had a very noisy family as neighbours for one week which spoilt the tranquility a bit for us (door banging, shouting and screeching late into the night and early morning). But that is not the hotel's fault and we never reported it as I was not sure what they could have done about it (we did not want to change our room as it was perfect otherwise).

Kolymbari is very lovely small village which - apart from the big new hotel - has retained a lot of it's charm as a little fishing village. We loved strolling past the tavernas in the afternoon and often eating some small snacks (especially in Palio Arhontiko) with a bottle of wine for little money and just let the day pass us by. The friendly attention and good food and service were great there (always a free Raki and a free desert at the end). You could watch the little fishing boats going out and coming back with their catch of the day.

We did not hire a car, but booked some excursions in the Hotel which was no more expensive than elsewhere. We walked the Samaria gorge, which was breathtaking. We also took the bus to Chania several times and found this very easy to do.

The Spa was good, too, and we used it once when the weather wasn't that great, but unfortunately they had changed their policy of adults only and had allowed children into the Spa in the mornings, which spoilt the sauna and steam room experience as they just run around and in and out, left doors open and their parents were nowhere to be seen. I would definitely book into an adult only hotel next time, not that I don't like children (I have 2 of my own), but there is a kids club for their entertainment and if they don't like that I would expect the parents to supervise and entertain them so they don't spoil other guests' holidays.

The hotel has very comfortable sunbeds on the beach (wooden with mattress) which we made good use of and the breeze of wind from the sea was very welcome on hot days. The water was comfortable to swim in, although it was as others already mentioned, stoney and definitely easier with shoes to get in and out.

The season coming to an end and some hotels in the area had already closed for the winter. We were told that the Avra was going to close down on the 26th October, and staff had started to remove the watersports equipment from the beach and were taking parasols down. On the positive note though the hotel only seems half full, plenty of sunbeds, tables at dinner time etc.

All in all we had a great time and if it had not been for the very noisy neighbours would have been close to perfect. Thank you, Avra.

Room Tip: We had room number 11127 which is the end of the row of private pool rooms on the first floor, overl...

We were at the Avra Imperial at the end of September, and had an amazing family holiday with our 3.5 year old and 6 month old. We had half board, and we were so pleased and pleasantly surprised at the amazing food each day in the buffet. Every day something different, for all the family. They have a kids station, usually including chips, but our son had a proper delicious meal each night - steak, casserole, rice, veg... and all the fruit was amazing for him!
Very few British families when we were there, mostly Scandinavian, and even though the hotel was full it didnt ever feel it. With all the different choice of pools, or beach, it never felt crowded.
Would recommended the little taverna right next to the hotel, lovely local food at very good price, with excellent friendly service.
The only negative we could say is that they could do with a tea/coffee maker in your room!
If we were the kind of people to go back to the same hotel or resort, we would definitely return, but we have more places to explore.... .I just hope they live up to Avra!

Room Tip: Pool view was amazing. We were close to restaurant / bar area but it didn't keep us awake (even...
