“A great week (again)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013

A relaxing week culminating in our daughter's 16th.She had been keen to spend her birthday there.Micky and Stomatis invited us to a meal at the pool with his family and friends. Beth had a suprise cake and bubbly.Kolymbari is a little livelier because of the hotel but still lovely. We went into Platanias and Chania so easy on the bus. Although we experience other places in Greece we are returning again.

We stayed here August 2012. Apartments were clean & spacious. The pool & surrounding area was lovely. The downside was that quite often the owner was absent from the bar so you couldn't get any food or drink. There was a large group who were here after many years returning to these apartments who were happy to help themselves and leave a note of what was owed but we felt uncomfortable doing this. It wasn't a particularly picturesque part of the island with no decent beach to speak of. There were maybe 5 or 6 restaurants at most to choose from all within a 20 min walk which maybe enough for some people but was a little too quiet for us. All in all a nice holiday with the holiday owner taking the teenagers out for 1 eve in nearby Platanias which was a god send as there was not really enough to keep them entertained. Car hire a necessity!

Great holidays at Alonia. It was first time at Alonia Apartments and I am sure that we will come back one day. The rooms are very clean. Pool open 24h/day, good size and very clean. Lovely flowers all around the hotel. Mike and Julia you are the best :) I would recomend this place to everyone who want's relaxing holidays. Great atmosphere. Kolimbari is very quiet but If you want party there is a place called Platanias (only 8 km from Alonia Apartments). Even at 1.00 am you will find many night clubs and restaurants open. Most of them are open till morning.

We have just arrived back from a very nice stay at the Alonia Apartments. We were given no.18 which was a 1 room apartment on the ground floor. The rooms were spotlessly clean and quite big. The balcony overlooked the sea (about 5 minutes walk away) and the road which was not too busy. Bins were emptied daily (except Sunday) and towels were changed every three days. Although the kitchen area was small it had most things you would need on a self-catering holiday. The shower had a curtain but it did look new and there was a hairdrier which worked perfectly.
The pool area was lawned and very private with plenty of sunbeds and shades, the pool, although not huge was very nice with a separate area for children. The pool bar was always open and I can recommend the breakfasts which are huge! Mikey the host was usually around and spoke good English as did the girls on the pool bar and on reception.
We tried quite a few restaurants but the best was only a short walk away from the Alonia towards Chania, just off the main road run by a friendly family with excellent food.
Kolimbari is only about a twenty minute walk away, on a quiet road along the seashore, lit at night. Kolimbari has quite a few restaurants and bars along the seafront and a few overlooking the small harbour, the best of them being the Argentina with a balcony overlooking the harbour.
There is a bus stop about 5 minutes walk from the Alonia with regular buses running along the coast and to the popular places on the west and south coast.
To make the most of this pretty area of Crete you do need a car, which we had for 3 days.

This is our third time back at Alonia over past few years. We had another good time- love the quietness of the immediate area and Kolimbari itself which still manages to retain the feeling of bieng a fishing village despite a couple of hotels on its edge.Although we do not usually hire a car, have not found this a problem as there is a bus stop few yards down the road. Apartment as usual very clean and good size although compared to other years we did have problems with faulty air con, and few other maintenance glitches plus kitchen area and equipment is quite basic but we knew this anyway.Would agree about previous comment re loudness of music plus new bar person seemed to be quite stressed on several occasions if left by herself without Mikey's usual calm persona at her side

This was our 5th trip to the Alonia, staying with extended family. As many have noted Mike treats all guests as family and spoils you with his generosity. The rooms are well prepared and clean with usual basics one would expect. The pool is one of the cleanest you will find anywhere and the grass surrounding it is a nice setting for sunbathing. The nearest beach is a few minutes away but is pebbled though a 30 minute drive takes you to the stunning beach of falasarna. Kalives is a typical local beach resort and well worth a 30 minute drive. You can walk to the harbour tavernas of kolymbari if you are moderately fit in about 20 minutes and there are many good places to eat. A few hundred yards from the apartments takes you to the esperides taverna which is probably the best local place to eat with infectiously friendly staff.
We had a great holiday with the only cloud on the horizon being the overly loud dance music that seems to,sadly, be the favourite of the new lady who helps run the pool bar. Room 16 would be one to avoid if like us you like a quieter holiday as the speaker is on the outside wall some inches away from one of the beds. I did ask to have it turned down a couple of times, and it was, but at my age I liked the more traditional and quieter music Mike used to play.

Room Tip: avoid room 16 if you like peace.

My daughter and I booked this holiday based on Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. It was my daughters birthday on the day we arrived at these beautiful and spotlessly clean apartments.

Mikey (the owner) was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and his hospitality was incredible.

We stayed for one week and loved every minute of holiday.

Will definitely make it 2 weeks next time!

Room Tip: We had a sea view on 1st floor - Perfect!
